Introduction
The ADA Phone Suite vastly expands the paging capability of the Suite 16 or Suite 8 x 8 multi-room
system. The Phone Suite provides a convenient way to interface a standard telephone line into the
paging circuitry of ADAs multi-room systems. It is very easy to install and operates seamlessly with
most phone systems. The Phone Suite also lets you use any touch-tone phone for music control in any
zone in the system.
Paging Features
With the Phone Suite, you can page individual rooms or pre-programmed paging groups. You can also
perform a system wide page from any phone in the house. All paging functions can be performed with
any standard touch-tone telephone.
Automatic System Muting
The Phone Suite automatically mutes the music in designated room whenever you receive an incoming
call or the phone is taken off the hook. The system reverts to normal operation at the last volume level
ve seconds after the phone call has ended.
Place Incoming Calls On Hold
The Phone Suite allows you to place callers on hold while performing a page even if your telephone
system does not have a hold feature. You can also program the Phone Suite to keep the line busy while
making pages.
Provides Internal Dial Tone
The Phone Suite generates its own distinctive dial tone to let you know you are communicating with
the multi-room system. The line emulation feature even lets you control the paging functions with any
touch-tone phone completely independent of the main telephone system.
Music Control with any Telephone
The Phone Suite converts any touch-tone telephone into a music control keypad. You can perform the
following commands in any zone: Source Selection, Zone off and Volume Control.
Auxiliary Line Input
A separate balanced line input connector allows you to add an auxiliary line level source for system paging
such as a microphone or door chime. There is also a mixing level control for the auxiliary source.
Status Indicators
Several indicators on the Phone Suite let you know when there is an incoming call, if the phone is off
the hook or when there is communication between the Phone Suite and the ADA Bus.

Making Connections ADA Phone Suite
Connecting Your Incoming Telephone Line to the Phone Suite
The ADA Phone Suite is designed for use with any standard telephone line or telephone system. Use a
standard telephone cable terminated with an RJ-11 connector from your incoming telephone line into the
Line In connector on the Phone Suite. In the Line Emulation mode, it is not required to connect a phone
line into the Line In Jack.
Connecting One of Your Telephones to the Phone Suite
Connect a telephone to the RJ-11 Line Out connection of the Phone Suite in order to have access to all
the functions and capabilities of the unit.
ADA Bus® Connection
The ADA Bus® allows the Phone Suite to communicate with the Suite 16 or Suite 8 x 8 in order to control
its paging functions.
Shielded three-conductor 18 AWG wire is utilized to make all ADA bus connections for the Suite 16 and
Suite 8 x 8. The pin conguration is as follows:
Pin 1=Ground Pin 2=Feedback Terminal (TX)
Pin 3=Control Terminal (RX) Pin 4= +15-24 Vdc supply voltage.

Terminating Bus Wire with a Four Pin Connector to Make an ADA Bus Cable
ADA Bus cable is used for all bus components such as the Phone Suite, ISO-CAT, CMB-1 system clock,
etc. These components are usually terminated at the WH-2000 wiring harness.
1. Cut a section of shielded three-conductor wire to the desired length for each ADA Bus cable you want
to terminate.
2. Strip the outer jacket to expose the shield and three separate conductors.
3. For each of the three conductors in the shielded wire, strip just enough insulation from the wire to
expose 1/4” of bare wire to t into the connector.
4. Unravel the shield and prepare it as a separate conductor by twisting it tightly clockwise.
5. Loosen each of the four set screws on each connector with a small at blade screwdriver (1/8” wide)
enough to insert the stripped bare speaker wire.
6. Before inserting the wire into the connector, twist all its strands tightly to prevent strays that could
cause a short circuit.
7. Follow the pin conguration listed above, but always use the shield for the ground (pin 1).
8. Insert the stripped bare wire into the connector and tighten the set screws rmly into the place with a
small at blade screwdriver. Do not over tighten.
Connecting the ADA Bus of the Phone Suite to the WH-2000 Wiring Harness
Once you have terminated an ADA Bus cable with the screw type terminals, connect one end of the cable
to the Phone Suite and the other end to one of the fuse protected ADA Bus connectors on the WH-2000:
1 ( J4), 2 ( J3), and 3 ( J2). If necessary, you can also use the LOOP OUT connector on the WH-2000 for
a fourth ADA Bus component but be aware it is not fuse protected.
Connecting the Output of the Phone Suite to the Multi-room System's Paging Input
Terminate the 600 ohm balanced output of the Phone Suite to the 600 ohm paging input of the Suite
16 or Suite 8 x 8 with a two conductor shielded microphone cable. The output terminals of the Phone
Suite connect to the Paging input of the Suite 16 or Suite 8 x 8 as follows:
Phone Suite Out Terminal Suite 16 and Suite 8 x8 Paging Input Terminal
Ground (Terminal 4) Ground (Terminal 1)
Positive (Terminal 5) Positive (Terminal 2)
Negative (Terminal 6) Negative (Terminal 3)
If you experience hum through the paging input with the termination described above, you can try connecting
the Phone Suite using the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals only.
8
Audio Design Associates
www.ada-usa.com
Phone Suite Installation Manual
www.ada-usa.com 9
Connecting an Additional Line Level Paging Source to the Phone Suite
If desired, you can connect a secondary line level source to the Audio Input of the Phone Suite. This
gives you an additional source to activate the paging circuitry such as a doorbell or other line level source.
Terminate the 600 ohm balanced output secondary paging source to the 600 ohm paging input of the
Suite 16 or Suite 8 x 8 with a two conductor shielded microphone cable. The output terminals of the
Phone Suite connect to the Paging input of the Suite 16 or Suite 8 x 8 as follows:
Phone Suite Out Terminal
Ground (Terminal 1)
Positive (Terminal 2)
Negative (Terminal 3)
If you experience hum through the paging input or if you are using an unbalanced paging source, connect
the signal across the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals only.
Connecting the Provided 12 VAC 500 mA Power Supply to the Phone Suite
Once you have made all the other connections to the Phone Suite, plug the barrel connector of the
external power supply to the Phone Suite and then plug in into the wall. The power LED will light
when the Phone Suite is powered on.
Jumper Settings on the ADA Phone Suite
Depending on the application of the ADA Phone Suite, you will need to properly position the three
jumpers as described below:
Baud Rate Jumper
The Suite 16 and Suite 8 x 8 leave the factory with an internal baud rate of 19,200 bps. However, some
systems may require a baud rated setting of 1,200. Be sure that the baud rate setting of the Phone Suite
matches the baud rate of the Suite 16 or Suite 8 x 8. The jumper is labeled for 1,200 and 19,200 bps.
Place the jumper in the upper position for 19,200 bps and place the jumper in the lower position for
1,200 bps.
Line Emulation Mode
The Line Emulator jumper sets the emulate mode for the Phone Suite so when any phone or spare line
in the phone system will immediately receive a distinctive tone for an “inside line” to directly control
the Phone Suite's functions.when the phone is picked up. When the Line Emulator jumper is set to
the on position, the Phone Suite operates independently of the rest of the phone system and the hold
feature of the Phone Suite is defeated. However, the ring mute and off hook mute features are still
functional. When in the line emulation mode, you do not need to press the pound (#) key to establish
an inside dial tone. All you need to do is pick up the phone. You cannot get an outside line when the
Phone Suite is set to the line emulation mode.

Line Emulator Mode Jumper
Set the jumper to the upper On position for Line Emulation mode or set the lower Off position for
Normal mode operation.
Normal Mode
In this mode, any phone or spare line from a phone system will operate normally. To obtain an inside
line for paging control. Press the pound (#) key three times within two seconds or hold continuously
for two seconds to get the inside dial tone.
Hold On/Off Mode Jumper
Set this jumper to the right On position for Hold On mode or set the left Off position for Hold Off
mode operation.
Hold Mode On
When the Hold Mode On jumper is set to the On position the outside line will be busy while the
paging circuitry is being controlled through the Phone Suite. This also allows you to place a caller on
hold while a page is being performed.
Hold Mode Off
When set to the Off position, the outside line will remain unaffected during a page so you can still
receive incoming calls.
Controls and Adjustments of the Phone Suite
Tone Level Adjustment
This control sets the internal level to the DTMF (dual tone multi frequency) decoder. In most cases
the default Norm level setting should be adequate for the Phone Suite to operate properly. However,
depending on the phone system it may be necessary to readjust this level. If the Phone Suite obtains
an inside line reliably when pressing the # key three times within two seconds or holding it for two
seconds, the level is set correctly. If the Phone Suite doesnt respond to commands from the telephone,
try readjusting the Tone Level control.
Phone Page Level Control
This control adjusts the audio level from the telephone system. The default setting should be adequate
in most situations especially since you can adjust the level with the Suite 16 software. However, if your
phone system has too low or high of a signal, you can readjust the level with the Phone Page level
control.

External Level Mix Control
If you have connected an external paging or audio source such as a doorbell, you can adjust the Mix
In level control so the external source matches the level of the telephone system. You can also use
this control to make the external source softer or louder than the telephone system if so desired.
Phone Suite Indicators
Power Indicator
This LED lights when the external 12 Vac supply is connected and plugged into a live AC outlet.
Hook Sense Indicator
This indicator lights up whenever the inside line is active.
Bus XMIT Indicator
This LED ashed whenever any serial communication is taking place on the ADA Bus.
Ring Sense Control
This indicator ashes whenever an incoming call is received at the line in connection of the Phone
Suite.
Operating the Multi-Room System with the Phone Suite Installed
Setting the Primary Zone
When rst setting up the Phone Suite for use with the Suite 16 or Suite 8 x 8 system, you need to
let the system know what zone the primary telephone is in. This allows the music to be muted in the
room when the phone rings or when the phone is picked up. It also mutes the page in the specied
room to prevent feedback. Finally, when congured for a specied room, the music control feature
allows you to control the zone with the telephone.
You can also defeat the room specic features of the Phone Suite by assigning the Phone Suite to
room 00. If you set it for non-room specic operation, music control, ring mute, off hook mute,
mute from inside dial tone, and exclude from paging group features are defeated so the phone is
used for paging only.
To Set the Zone for Control by the Phone Suite
1. Pick up the telephone connected to the Phone Suite.
2. Acquire the inside dial tone by pressing the pound (#) key three times within two seconds or
holding it continuously for two seconds.
3. Press the star (*) key and then dial the 2 digit room number from 00-99.
4. You will hear one acknowledgement beep in the receiver then a return to the inside dial tone.
5. Set the zone to 00 if you want to defeat the room specic functions of the Phone Suite and use
the phone for paging only.

Ada Phone Suite is a convenient way to integrate a standard telephone line into the paging circuitry of ADA's multi-room systems. Here are some of its capabilities:

  • Paging: Page individual rooms or pre-programmed paging groups. System-wide paging is also possible.
  • Automatic System Muting: Mutes music in designated rooms when you receive an incoming call or take the phone off the hook.
  • Place Incoming Calls on Hold: Put callers on hold while paging, even if your telephone system doesn't have a hold feature.
  • Provides Internal Dial Tone: Generates a distinctive dial tone to indicate communication with the multi-room system.
