Installing Your
Printer in
Windows
Environments
Introduction1-2
Introduction
This chapter guides you through the installation of your printer in Windows
environments. There are two ways to connect your printer to a PC: through a
network connection (Ethernet interface) or through a local connection
(parallel or USB interface).
About the Interface Panel
!
!!
!
Ethernet Port
Use a twisted-pair
(RJ45) Ethernet
cable when
connecting the
Ethernet port on the
printer to a 10BaseT/
100BaseTX network
connection.
"
""
"
USB Port
Use a USB 1.1 cable (Type B) when connecting the USB port on the printer to
the USB port on your computer.
#
##
#
Parallel Port
Use a Centronics IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel cable when connecting the
parallel port on the printer to the parallel port on your computer.
Local Connections
Theory
A local connection
is accomplished by
connecting the PC
and the printer
directly by means
of a parallel or USB
interface. These
interfaces support
only a one-to-one
Local connection
Local Connections
1-3
connection, which means that the workstation exclusively “owns” the connec-
tion to the printer.
Some network environments
provide access to a printer
locally attached to one of the
PCs. Although all users on this
network may use the printer,
the (print) data flow to that
particular PC may affect its
normal use. In most of these
cases, this PC is exclusively
needed as a print server and
cannot be used as a normal
PC anymore.
Supported Environments
Making the Connection
Parallel Interface
1
Connect your printer to your PC with a parallel cable.
The cable must not be longer than 6.5 feet (2 meters).
2
Turn on the PC and the printer.
3
When the message window displays
IDLE/MAGICOLOR
2300DL
, insert the
Utilities and Documentation
CD-ROM in your PC’s
CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions on the screen to install the
printer driver and utilities.
4
When you have finished, remove the CD-ROM and store it in a safe place.
5
Customize the printer driver settings for your printer’s configuration. Refer
to the printer driver’s online help.

Network Connection

Network Connection
Theory
To connect your printer in a
TCP/IP network environment, you
must make sure that the internal
network addresses in the printer
have been set.
&'
In many cases, you have
to enter only a unique IP
address. However, you
may also have to enter a
subnet mask and/or a
gateway (router) address,
depending on your
network configuration
requirements.
Supported Environments
Making the Connection
Ethernet Interface
The standard Ethernet interface is an RJ45 type of connector,
capable of transmission speeds from 10 to 100 megabits per
second (Mbit/s).
When connecting your printer to an Ethernet network, the tasks you perform
depend on how you plan to set the printer’s IP (Internet Protocol) address.
Printers are shipped with a preset IP address, subnet mask, and gateway.

(
IP Address—A unique identifier for each device on a TCP/IP network.
(
Subnet Mask—A filter used to determine what subnet an IP address
belongs to.
(
Gateway—A node on a network that serves as an entrance to another
network.
Since the IP address for each PC and printer on your network must be
unique, you usually need to modify this preset address so it doesn’t conflict
with any other IP address or your network or any attached network. You can
do this in one of three ways. Each is explained in detail in the following
sections.
(
Using DHCP
(
Not using DHCP (using the CD-ROM AutoInstaller)
(
Setting the address manually
Using DHCP
If your network supports DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), the
printer’s IP address will be automatically assigned by the DHCP server when
your turn on the printer. (Refer to chapter 6, “Network Printing,” for a descrip-
tion of DHCP.)
&'
If your printer is not automatically assigned an IP address, verify that
DHCP is enabled on the printer (
Special Pages/Print Config Page). If it
is not enabled, you can enable it in the Network/DHCP/BOOTP menu.
1
Connect your printer to the network.
Attach your printer to the network by plugging the network RJ45 connec-
tor into the RJ45 receptacle on the interface panel of your printer.
2
Turn on your PC and printer.
3
When the printer’s message window displays
IDLE/MAGICOLOR
2300DL
, insert the
Utilities and Documentation
CD-ROM in your PC’s
CD-ROM drive.
The CD-ROM AutoInstaller automatically starts.
4
Follow the instructions on the screen to install the printer driver and
utilities.
5
When you have finished, remove the CD-ROM and store it in a safe place.
6
Customize the driver settings for your printer’s configuration. Refer to the
printer driver’s online help.
Network Connection
1-7
Not Using DHCP (Using the CD-ROM AutoInstaller)
If you’re not using DHCP, the
Documentation and Utilities
CD-ROM’s
AutoInstaller provides a way to set the printer’s IP address.
Caution
You should always notify your network’s administrator before changing
the printer’s IP address.
1
Connect your printer to the network.
Attach your printer to the network by plugging the network RJ45 connec-
tor into the RJ45 receptacle on the interface panel of your printer.
2
Turn on your PC and printer.
3
When the printer’s message window displays IDLE/MAGICOLOR
2300DL
, insert the
Utilities and Documentation
CD-ROM in your PC’s
CD-ROM drive.
The CD-ROM AutoInstaller automatically starts.
4
Follow the instructions on the screen to set the printer’s IP address, and
then install the printer driver and utilities.
5
When you have finished, remove the CD-ROM and store it in a safe place.
6
Customize the driver settings for your printer’s configuration. Refer to the
printer driver’s online help.
Setting the Internet Address Manually
You may also manually change the printer’s IP address, subnet mask, and
gateway by using the following instructions. (See chapter 2, “Understanding
the Network Configuration Menus,” for more information.)
&'
When manually setting the IP address, turn off DHCP and BOOTP
first.
Caution
You should always notify your network’s administrator before changing
the printer’s IP address.
IP ADDRESS, SUBNET MASK, and GATEWAY are displayed only when both
DHCP and BOOTP are set to off.
1
Turn on your PC and printer.
Network Connection1-8
2
When the printer’s message window displays
IDLE/MAGICOLOR
2300DL
, set the IP address.
3
If you don’t want to set the subnet mask or gateway, go to step 5.
If you don’t want to set the subnet mask, but you do want to set the gate-
way, go to step 4.
If you want to set the subnet mask, follow these steps.
