Recommended protection and sizing on site
For short-circuit protection and for disconnecting the actuator from the mains, fuses, circuit breakers and discon-
nect switches typically have to be provided by the customer.
We recommend adapting the reversing contactor sizing to the max. current (Imax) and selecting and setting the
overcurrent protection device in compliance with the indications in the electrical data sheet. This section only
applies to NORM actuators without actuator controls.
Circuit breakers (inverse time delay) can also be selected according the overcurrent protection device in com-
pliance with the indications in the electrical data sheet, but should not exceed the starting current/locked rotor
current (located on the motor name tag). We recommend tripping characteristics D or K for circuit breakers.
External fuses (dual-element, time-delay, Class CC) can be sized up to 120% of the Imax value (located on the
actuator name tag) but should not exceed the starting current/locked rotor current (located on the motor name
tag).
Protection may be further improved by sizing protective devices capable of disconnecting the actuator between
5 and 10 seconds of the starting current/locked rotor current (located on the motor name tag).
Motor disconnect switch can be sized at 115% of the Imax value (located on the actuator name tag).
External motor wiring can be sized to 120% of the Imax value (located on the actuator name tag) for
S2 – 15minute duty, or S4 – 25% duty motors.
External motor wiring can be sized to 150% of the Imax value (located on the actuator name tag) for S2 – 30
minute duty, or S4 – 50% duty motors.
For actuator controls with thyristors, we require high speed semiconductor protection fuses (not within the
scope of AUMA supply) mounted at the power distribution panel.
