SIGNAL WORD MEANING

Thisdeviceanditspackagingcontainnohazardousmaterials.
Nospecialprecautionsneedtobetakenwhendisposingthe
deviceand/orit’spackaging.
Principles of Operation
Theoxygenconservingregulatorisdesignedtobeusedwith
highpressureoxygensystems.Itconsistsofacylinder
connection,cylindercontentsgauge(ifequipped),hightolow
pressureregulator,orificeplateandaconservingdemand
module.Theregulatorreducesthehighpressureofthe
cylindertotheworkingpressureoftheorificeplate.The
orificeplateusescalibratedorificestodeliveraselectedflow
totheconservingdemandmodule.Theconservingdemand
modulecontrolsthepulsesizeandtimingtothepatient.It
suppliesapulseofoxygenatthebeginningofeachbreath.
Thisreducestheoxygendemandonthesystemandlimitsthe
dryingoftheairways.Theflowisdeterminedbysettingthe
flowcontrolknobtotheprescribedflow.Theoxygenis
suppliedtothepatientthoughthecannula.

enrichedair.Failuretoobservethiswarningcanresultin

INTRODUCTION
Theoxygenconservingregulatorincludesacombinationof
lowpressureregulatorandanoxygenconserver,designed
forusewithacylinderasanambulatoryoxygensystem.Itis
capableofdeliveringapreciseamountofsupplemental
oxygenattheoptimalpointinthebreathingcycle.The
conservergreatlyincreasestheefficiencyinthedeliveryof
oxygen,maximizingthebeneficialeffectsandeliminating
unnecessaryoxygenwaste.
Whenwebreathe,approximatelyonethirdofthetimeis
spentinhalingandtwothirdsexhaling.Asaresult,oxygen
deliveredbycontinuousflowiswastedduringexhalation.By
eliminatingoxygenflowduringexhalation,atwothirds
savingsispossible.Additionally,theoxygenavailableduring
theveryfirstpartofinhalationcontributesmostlytomeet
oxygenneeds.Theoxygenconservingregulatortakes
advantageofthesefactstoprovidemaximumefficiencyinthe
deliveryofoxygen.Thisdeviceisdesignedtobeanintegral
componentofalightweight,longlastingambulatoryoxygen
system.

Whenusingtheoxygenconservingregulator,basic
precautionsshouldALWAYSbefollowed,includingthe
following:

Notsuitableforuseinthepresenceofflammableanesthetic
mixture.
NEVERusenearanytypeofflameorflammable/explosive
substances,vaporsoratmosphere.
ALWAYSfollowANSIandCGAstandardsforMedicalGas
ProductsandFlowmeters(E7)andOxygenHandling(G4).
NOOXYGENisdeliveredwhenthepointerisalignedwith
“Off”.
DONOTblocktheoutletfittingorkinkthecannulawhenthe
productisinuse,thismaydamagetheunit.
Theuseofthisdeviceislimitedtotheoxygenpatient.
CylindersMUSTbeusedonlybytheoxygenpatientandare
nottobedistributedtoanyotherindividualforanypurpose.
ThisproductisNOTtobeusedbypatientswhobreathe
throughtheirmouths.
DONOTuseahumidifierwiththisproduct.

theycannotfall.Ensurecylinderisalwaysinuprightposition.
DONOTallowoilfromyourhandsorothersourcestocome
intocontactwiththecylinderpostvalve.Thesesubstances
maybecomeflammableinthepresenceofoxygenandcause
injury.Avoidtouchingthecylinderpostvalvewhenever
possible.Exampleofitemstoavoidarehandcreamsor
lotions,cookingoils,suntanoilsorsunblocksandsimilaroily
products.Ifyouusethesetypesofproducts,washyourhands
priortouse.Ifthebottlefittingshouldcomeincontactwith
suchsubstancesitshouldbecleanedoffwithadampcloth
priortoconnectingittotheconservingregulator.
NEVERoilorlubricatetheoxygenconservingregulatoror
cylinderpostvalve.NEVERuseanypenetratingoilor
lubricantsuchasWD40

.Ifcontinueddifficulty

DONOTplacetheunitundersuchitemsasblankets,bed
coverings,chaircushions,clothingandawayfromheatedor
hotsurfaces,includingspaceheaters,stovesandsimilar
electricalappliances.Whenthisproductisinuseasmall
amountofoxygenisvented.Withregardstoclothing‐
wearingtheunitunderclothingmaysaturatefabricswith
oxygenandcausethemtoburnrapidlyifexposedtosparks
orflame.Itmaytakeseveralhoursforoxygenlevelsinfabrics
toreturntonormal.

SelectorSwitch:Enablestheusertoselectthedesiredsetting,
aswellas“OFF”and“CF”(continuousflow).Whennotin
use,theswitchshouldbeturnedtothe“OFF”position.
OxygenSupplyOutlet:Usethisfittingtoattachastandard
cannula.
CylinderAlignmentPins:Whenassemblingtheunit,these
parallelpinsMUSTbeinsertedintotheholesontheCGA870
postvalve.
CGA870SealWasher[MetalWasherwithVitonor
equivalentSeal]:Createstheinterfacebetweenthepostvalve
andtheconserverregulator.Besidesofferingarugged
interface,italsosurroundstheoxygenpathinaringof
stainlesssteelorbrass.
Vent Hole:Maintainsproperinternalpressure.DONOT

2. Lowertheconserverover
anyCGA870postvalve
cylinderwiththe
alignmentpinstoward
theholesonthecylinder
neck.
3. Alignthetwopinsand
gasketwiththe
correspondingholeson
thecylinderpostvalve.

4. Listenforleaks.Ifaleakispresent,closethecylinder
valve,checktheCGA870sealwasher,andreinstall.Ifthe
leakpersists,DONOTusetheequipment.Contactyour
HomeCareProviderforrepair.
5. Checktheoxygenpressuregaugetoverifythecylinder
pressure.
6. Ensurethattheventholeonthesideoftheunitisnot
obstructed.
7. Positionthecylindersotheoxygencylindervalveoutletis
pointingawayfromtheuserandanyotherperson(s).
8. Attachastandardadultsinglelumenoxygennasal
cannula,nolongerthansevenfeettotheproduct’soutlet
fitting.DONOTusepediatric,lowflownasalcannulasor
oxygenmaskswiththisproduct.
NOTE:Aunitwithoutcannulaattachedmaypulseifsetatposition

inyournoseaccordingtothecannulamanufacturers

NOTE:Thecontinuous flowsetting(CF)isdesignedforemergency
useonly.Theamountofoxygendeliveredwhenusingtheoxygen
conservingregulatorincontinuousflowmodeispresetto2L/min.
(litersperminute).Rememberthatinthismodetheoxygenwillbe
consumedatamuchfasterrate.Returntoanothersourcebefore

Whenpointeroncontentsgaugeentersredzone,itis
recommendedtoreplaceorrefillthecylinder.
11. Breathethroughthenoseandfeelapulseofoxygenasyou
inhale.
NOTE:Whenonapulsesetting,thereisfloworapulseonlyatthe
beginningofeachbreath.Ifyoudonotfeelthepulseatthebeginning
ofeachbreath,checkthesetting.Ifthereisstillnopulse,turndialto
2L/min.continuoussetting.FIGURE4.2onpage21.
