Principles of Operation
Theoxygenconservingregulatorisdesignedtobeusedwith
highpressureoxygensystems.Itconsistsofacylinder
connection,cylindercontentsgaug e(ifequipped),hightolow
pressureregulator ,orificeplateandaconservingdemand
module.Theregulatorreducesthehighpressureofthecylinder
totheworkingpressureoftheorificeplate.Theorificeplateuses
calibratedorificestodeliv eraselectedflowtoth econserving
demandmodule.Theconservingdemandmodulecontrolsthe
pulsesizeandtimingtothepatient.Itsuppliesapulseofoxygen
atthebeginningofeachbreath. Thisreducestheoxygendemand
onthesystemandlimitsthedryingoftheairways.Theflowis
determinedbysettingtheflowcontrolknobtotheprescribed
flow.Theoxygenissuppliedtothepatientthoughthe cannula.

INTRODUCTION
Theoxygenconservingregulatorincludesacombinationof
lowpressureregulatorandanoxygenconserv er,designedfor
usewithacylinderasanambulatoryoxygensystem.Itiscapable
ofdeliv erin gapreciseamountofsupplementaloxygenatthe
optimalpointinthebreathingcycle.Theconserv ergreatly
increasestheefficiencyinthedeliv eryofoxygen,maximizingthe
beneficialeffects andeliminatingunnecessaryoxygenwaste.
Whenwebreathe,approximatelyonethirdofthetimeisspent
inhalingand twothirdsexhaling.Asaresult,oxygendeliv ered
bycontinuousflowis wastedduringexhalation.Byeliminating
oxygenflowduringexhalation,atwothirdssavingsispossible.
Additionally,theoxygenavailableduringtheveryfirstpartof
inhalationcontributesmostlytomeetoxygenneeds.Theoxygen
conservingregulatortakesadv antageofthesefact stoprovide
maximumefficiencyinthedeliveryofoxygen.Thisdeviceis
designedtobeanintegralcomponentofalightweight,
longlastingambulatoryoxygensystem.
