Chapter 1
ServerNet II Introduction
Overview
The Compaq ServerNetä II System Area Network (SAN) offers point-to-point, wormhole-
routed connections between Compaq ProLiantä servers in clustering environments where
multiple servers are linked together. Wormhole routing, unlike store and forward, allows the
head of the packet to leave the router before the tail arrives, providing lower latency.
ServerNet II improves latency and bandwidth and reduces CPU usage over the previous
ServerNet version. In addition, it lets you create redundant SANs when ServerNet II Adapters
are teamed with ServerNet II Switches. The SAN can contain from two to 12 nodes with one or
two Switches, or it can be configured without a Switch (a switchless SAN). Information about
these configurations is found later in this chapter.

ServerNet II Switch Features
A ServerNet II Switch (the “Switch”) is a point-to-point networking device that connects up to
12 nodes in the ServerNet II System Area Network (SAN). It routes ServerNet II packets from
originating nodes to destination nodes on the servers. A ServerNet II Switch is required for a
SAN with three or more nodes and is optional for a SAN with two nodes.
Connects a maximum of 12 server nodes to one fabric (the internal interconnect
architecture used by a switch that redirects the data coming in on one of its ports out to
another of its ports; a fabric is also the combination of interconnected switches used
throughout a campus or large geographic area, which collectively provide a routing
infrastructure) of a ServerNet II SAN
Fault-tolerant fabrics achieved with two ServerNet II Switches connected to ServerNet II
PCI Adapters
Each ServerNet II connection operates at a packet speed of 1.25 Gb/s, with a packet
payload of up to 512 bytes; bi-directional bandwidth is 1.25 + 1.25 Gb/s, yielding an
aggregate bandwidth of 15 Gb/s for 12 ports
Status LEDs indicate power on or off, Switch fault/no fault, Switch fabric (X or Y), and
link-alive on the 12 ports
Monitoring of SAN operations through standard SNMP agents or through Compaq Insight
Manager (CIM)
Full-duplex operation
2U high; rack mountable in a 19 X 30-inch rack (mounting rails and brackets included)

1-12 Compaq ServerNet II PCI Adapter and Switch Installation Guide
ServerNet II SAN Topologies
This section shows a progression of ServerNet II SAN topologies representing switchless and
switched configurations, single- and dual-fabrics, and topologies with and without fault
tolerance. These examples are for illustration only.
NOTE: Configuration worksheets are provided in Appendix M for your use in configuring your topology.
Figure 1-6. Example 1: Switchless Single-Fabric, 2-Node SAN
Figure 1-6 shows a two-node SAN topology connecting two ServerNet II PCI Adapters and
containing no ServerNet II Switch. In this example, you connect the ports on the ServerNet II
Adapters with a single SAN cable (X-to-X or Y-to-Y). This produces a single-port SAN
topology.
Figure 1-7. Example 2: Switchless, Dual-Fabric, Two-Node SAN
Figure 1-7 shows a 2-node SAN topology connecting two ServerNet II PCI Adapters and
containing no ServerNet II Switch. In this example, you connect the ports on the ServerNet II
Adapters with two SAN cables (X-to-X and Y-to-Y). This produces a dual-port topology on the
Adapters. If one port fails, the other port works as a backup to continue SAN operations.
ServerNet II Introduction 1-13
Figure 1-8. Example 3: Switched, Single-Fabric, Four-Node SAN
Figure 1-8 shows a single-fabric SAN topology containing one ServerNet II Switch and four
ServerNet II PCI Adapters installed in ProLiant servers. In this example, you connect either the
X port or Y port on the Adapters to the Switch. If you want to configure an X-fabric Switch,
connect the X port on the Adapter to the X-fabric Switch, as shown in Figure 1-8. If you want to
configure a Y-fabric Switch, connect the Y port on the Adapter to the Y-fabric Switch (not
shown). This produces a four-node SAN topology.
