running. Control direction by the handle, not by
conditions possible. Be alert and exercise the same
foot pressure on the mower housing.

run, with the mower.
[CA]
* Be especially careful when mowing uneven or
rough ground. The mower may tilt, exposing the
blade, and hidden objects could be thrown by the
blade. Keep all four wheels on the ground.
* iJse extra care when mowing around objects to
keep the blade from striking them. Never delibera-
tely mow over any object.
* Stop the engine immediately if the blade hits an
object or the mower starts to vibrate. Remove the
spark plug cap (keep the wire away from the plug)
and inspect for damage.
* Never move the shif lever when the mower is self-
propelling (SXA type only).
BEFORE YOU START THE MOWER
1. Check the engine oil level.
* Engine oil is a major factor affecting engine per-
formance and service life. Non-detergent or veget-
able oils are not recommended.
* Running the engine with insufficient oil can cause
serious engine damage.
Use Honda-4-stroke, or an equivalent high deter-
gent, premium quality motor oil certified to meet or
exceed U.S. automobile manufacturers’ requirements
for service classification SE or SF (Motor oils clas-
sified SE or SF will show this designation on the
container).
SAE low-40 is recommended for general, all tem-
perature use.
a. Place the mower on a level surface.
b. Remove the oil filler cap and wipe the dipstick
clean.
c. Insert the dipstick into the oil filler neck, but do
not screw it in.
d. Check the oil level shown on the dipstick. If near
the lower level, fill to the upper level with the
recommended oil.

2. Check the fuel level.
Your engine is designed to use any gasoline that has a
pump octane number (
w) of 86 or higher,
or that has a research octane number of 91 or higher.
Gasoline pumps at service station normally display
the pump octane number.
We recommend that you use unleaded fuel because it
produces fewer engine and spark plug deposits and ex-
tends the life of exhaust system components.
Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or an
oil/gasoline mixture. Avoid getting dirt, dust or water
in the fuel tank. Use of a lower octane gasoline can
cause persistent “pinging” or heavy “spark knock”
(a metallic rapping noise) which, if severe, can lead to
engine damage.
pzmzq
* If ‘Spark knock” or ‘pinging” occurs at a steady
engine speed under normal load, change brands of
gasoline. If spark knock or pinging persists, consult
your authorized Honda dealer. Failure to do so is
considered misuse, and damage caused by misuse is
not covered by Honda’s Limited Warranty.
Occasionally you may experience light spark knock while
operating under heavy loads. This is no cause for con-
cern, it simply means your engine is operating efficiently.
* Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive
under certain conditions.
*
Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine stop-
ped. Do not smoke or allow flames or sparks in the
area where the engine is refueled or where gasoline is
stored.
Do not overfill the fuel tank (there should be no fuel
in the filler neck). After refueling, make sure the tank
cap is closed properly and securely.
Be careful not to spillfuel when refueling. Spilledfuel
or fuel vapor may ignite. If any fuel is spilled, make
sure the area is dry before starting the engine.
Avoid repeated or prolonged contact with skin or
breathing of vapor. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF
CHILDREN.
11
GASOLINES CONTAINING ALCOHOL
If you decide to use a gasoline containing alcohol
(gasohol), be sure it’s octane rating is at least as high
as that recommended by Honda. There are two types
of “gasohol”:
one containing ethanol, and the other
containing methanol. Do not use gasohol that con-
tains more than 10% ethanol. Do not use gasoline
containing methanol (methyl or wood alcohol) that
does not also contain cosolvents and corrosion in-
hibitors for methanol. Never use gasoline containing
more than 5% methanol, even if it has cosolvents and
corrosion inhibitors.
NOTE:
+ Fuel system damage or engine performance pro-
blems resulting from the use of fuels that contain
alcohol is not covered under the warranty. Honda
cannot endorse the use of fuels containing
methanol since evidence of their suitability is as yet
incomplete.
*
Before buying fuel from an unfamiliar station, try
to find out if the fuel contains alcohol, if it does,
confirm the type and percentage of alcohol used. If
you notice any undesirable operating symptoms
while using a gasoline that contains alcohol, or one
that you think contains alcohol, switch to a
gasoline that you know does not contain alcohol.

3. Handle height adjustment
Adjust handle height for comvenient mowing.
- Loosen both side of handle hook bolts.
l Swing the handle up or down as required.
* After adjusting, make sure the handle hook bolts
are tightened securely.
4.Check the grass bag for fraying, tears and clogged
mesh. Wash the bag with water if necessary, and
let it dry thoroughly. Grass will not chute proper-
ly without adequate ventilaton through the bag.
Make sure that the bag is positioned properly.
5. Check the blade bolts for tightness.
Torque: 5.0-6.0 kg-m (36.2-43.4 ft-lb)
* To be certah that the engine will tlot start accidew
tall)!, remove the spark plug cap before performirlg
this iiispection.
6. Check the air cleaner element and clean it if it is
dirty (p. 25).

STARTING THE ENGINE
* Exhaust gas contains poisonous carbon monoxide.
Never run the mower in an enclosed area. Be sure
to provide adequate ventilation.
1. Move the throttle lever to “CHOKE”.
NOTE:
Do not use “CHOKE" when the engine is warm or
the air temperature is high. Move the throttle to
“LO” instead.

2. Turn the fuel valve “ON”.
14
3. Place your foot on the “STEP” of the mower
housing.
4. Pull the starter rope lightly until you feel re-
sistance, then pull briskly.
NOTE:
Do not allow the rope to snap back; return it by
hand.
5. After the engine warms up, move the throttle lever
to “HI”. Push the ROTO-STOP lever forward to
put the cutting blade into operation.
SXA type only:
Move the shift lever to “1”. Engage the drive
clutch/ROTO-STOP and the mower will move forward.
For faster speeds, shift to “2”.
NOTE:
The throttle lever may be moved anywhere between
“HI” and “LO” to adjust engine speed during opera-
tion.
However the engine may stall if the lever is at “LO”
when the ROTO-STOP is engaged.

Flooded Engine
If the engine won’t start after several pulls on the starter
rope the engine is probably flooded.
To clear a flooded engine:
1. Move the throttle lever to “STOP” and turn off the
fuel valve.
2. Remove and dry the spark plug. When re-installing
the plug, thread it in by hand until it seats. Then
tighten it an additional I/8-1/4 turn with the spark
plug wrench to compress the washer.
3. Move the throttle to “HI”, turn on the fuel valve and
repeat steps 3-5 under “Starting the Engine”.
Stopping the Engine
1. Release the drive clutch (SXA type only) and ROTO-
STOP lever.
2. Move the throttle lever to “STOP” and turn off the
fuel valve.
l High altitude operation
At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mix-
ture will be excessively rich. Performance will
decrease, and fuel consumption will increase.
High altitude performance can be improved by install-
ing a smaller diameter main fuel jet in the carbuetor
and readjusting the pilot screw. If you always operate
the rotary mower at altitudes higher than 6,000 feet
above sea level, have your authorized Honda Rotary
Mower dealer perform these carburetor modifica-
tions.

Even with suitable carburetor jetting, engine
horsepower will decrease approximately 3.5% for
each 1,000 foot increase in altitude. The affect of
altitude on horsepower will be greater than this if no
carburetor modification is made.
+ Operation of the mower at an altitude lower than the
carburetor is jetted for may result in reduced perfor-
mance, overheating, and serious engine damage caus-
ed by an excessively lean air/fuel mixture.
Cutting Height Adjustment
Six settings are available: 3/4”, l”, l-1/2”, 2”, 2-l/2”,
,,
3 .
1. Stop the engine.
2. Push the front and rear adjusting levers toward the
wheels and move them up or down to raise or
lower cutting height. Adjust all four wheels to the
same height.
-
* Be careful not to touch the muffler when adjust-
ing the right front wheel height.
The muffler will stay hot for a while after the en-
gine is stopped.

ADJUSTING LEVERS
Grass Bag
The bag is subject to wear under normal usage;
check frequently for fraying and tears. Replace
deteriorated bags only with Honda replacement bags
or their equivalent. When the bag needs cleaning,
wash it with water and make sure it is dry before
using it.
Clogged mesh will result in poor grass chuting and a
wet bag will clog quickly.
Removal
1. Stop the engine.
2. Raise the discharge guard, grasp the grass bag
handle, and lift the bag to unhook it from the
mower.
Installation
Raise the discharge guard and hook the grass bag
frame over the retaining tabs on the mower.
