Several factors affect picture shape.
Such as, the aspect ratio of the
broadcast image, the aspect ratio of
the original program material, and
the aspect ratio of the display screen.
Identifying Picture Shapes
Letter Box—This term is used to
describe a 16:9 ratio image dis-
played on a 4:3 aspect ratio screen.
Pillar Box—This shape results
when 4:3 aspect ratio material is dis-
played on a 16:9 aspect ratio screen.
Postage Stamp—This condition
occurs when an original 4:3 aspect
ratio program is broadcast as a
16:9 aspect ratio program, then
displayed on a 4:3 aspect ratio
screen. This causes the image to
display in the center of the screen
with a black border.
The PIX SHAPE key can be used
to Zoom the center of the image to
fill the screen. (The sides of a nor-
mal 16:9 image will be cut off.)
Use the PIX SHAPE key to adjust
the image size or shape to suit your
personal preferences. Not all shapes
will be available for all broadcasts.
Options will vary by model, due to
aspect ratio differences.
Normal is the term used to describe
programming that is broadcast in
its original aspect ratio (4:3 or
16:9) and displayed on a screen
with the same aspect ratio as the
original program material.

UHF/VHF/CATV IN

of these connections is 480i.
DIGITAL ADD-ON SEARCH
Use this feature to add new digital channels or
to add digital channels who’s broadcast towers
are in opposite directions from your location.
If necessary, after the initial search, turn the

steps for each direction in which there are trans-

CONNECT SIGNALS TO THE TELEVISION
CHOOSE THE BEST CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR HDTV SIGNAL
The Difference is in the
Signal
There are two Major factors that
affect picture quality: The Signal
and the Signal Connection.
You may have noticed that Signal
applies to both items. Signal qual-
ity is the Number One factor
affecting picture quality.
That being said, it is important to
understand that the same signal will
reproduce differently, depending
on the type of connection(s) you
choose, even when the input signal
is High-Definition (HDTV).
Typical Questions
After connecting a Digital TV
signal (DTV) will I automatically
receive HD images?
Not necessarily. The station must
be broadcasting High-Definition
(HDTV) programming in HD for-
mat for you to receive true HD
images.
Then what must I do to view HD
images on my Sanyo Digital
Television?
To view the fantastic HD images
this TV can reproduce, you must
first connect a High-Definition
signal, such as, a Digital Antenna
or HD Satellite Receiver. Then
you must tune to a digital channel
that is broadcasting a signal with
High-Definition content.
It is important for viewers to under-
stand the gravity of not connecting
the best possible signal to the TV.
Connecting inferior signals or using
standard analog audio/video jacks
will produce less than optimum
results.

A/V AND S-VIDEO CONNECTIONS—GOOD AND BETTER RESOLUTION
S-Video
Audio
THE SIGNAL MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
A/V and S-Video connectors accept only SDTV content, regardless of the
signal being received. These composite connectors (standard analog A/V
and S-Video) are included on your new Digital TV to provide continued
compatibility with older analog devices, such as VCRs.
The S-Video connector will provide the better resolution. If you have an
S-Video connector on your old analog equipment, you should use it
instead of the standard video connector.
