BasicOperation
TheThrottleknobcontrolshowfastyourtrainwilltravel.Turnthethrottleknob
up½-way,untiltheenginelightsshinebright.Puttheengineintomotionby
pressingtheDirectionbuttononyourtransformeronce.(holditforapproximately
1second)
IftheenginedoesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirection
button,youmaynothavesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove.
Turnthethrottleupabithigheruntilthetrainbeginstomove.
-Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage,andthereforetrainspeed,turnthe
throttlecontrolknob.Turningclockwisewillincreasevoltageandspeed,while
turningcounterclockwisewilldecreasevoltageandspeed.Theenginewillmaintain
thespeedyousetafteryoureleasethethrottleuntilyouturnitagaintochangethe
voltageandspeed.
-Tosoundthebell,inanengineequippedwithabellfirmlypressandrelease
theBellbutton.Toturnthebelloff,pressandreleasetheBellbuttonagain.The
bellwillcontinuetoringfromthetimeyouturnitonuntilyoupressandrelease
thebuttonagaintoturnitoff.
-TosoundtheHorn/whistle,firmlypresstheHorn/Whistle
button.Thehornorwhistlewillsoundforaslongasyoucontinuetodepressthe
button.Itwillstopwhenyoureleasethebutton.
-Yourtrainisprogrammedtostartinneutral.Thetrainwillalways
cycleneutral-forward-neutral-reversewitheachpressandreleaseofthedirection
button.Theengineisprogrammedtorestartinneutraleachtimethetrackvoltage
isturnedofffor25secondsormore.

ThismanualcontainstheoperatinginstructionsforProto-Sound2.0inconventional
modeonly.InstructionsforaccessingDCScommandmodefeaturesaccompanythe

ActivatingProto-Sound2.0ConventionalModeFeatures:
Proto-Sound2.0featuresareactivatedbysequencesofBellandHorn/Whistlebutton
pushesdescribedbelow.Pleasereadthefulldescriptionsofeachfeaturebeforeusingit.
Tousethesebuttonstoactivatefeaturesratherthantoblowthehorn/whistleorringthe
bell,youshouldtapthebuttonsveryquicklywitha½-secondpausebetweenbutton
presses.Youmayneedtopracticeyourtimingtomakethisworksmoothly.
FreightYardSounds(FYS)or
PassengerStationAnnouncements(PSA):
Yourengineisequippedwithasoundpackageofeitherfreightyardorpassengerstation
soundsthatyoucanplay.
TocuethesoundsystemtoplaytheFYS/PSA,quicklybutfirmlytaptheBellbutton
oncefollowedby2quicktapsofthebuttonwhiletheengineis
moving.Tapthebuttonsquicklybutallowapproximatelsecondbetweeneach
press.
PresstheDirectionbuttononcetostoptheengine.Thiswilltriggerthefirst
sequenceofFYS/PSA.Thereverseunitistemporarilydisabledsothatthetrainwill
notmoveasyouusetheDirectionbuttontotriggerthesounds,andProto-Sound2.0
hasdisabledoperatorcontrolovertheandBellbuttonsuntilthefull
FYS/PSAsequenceiscomplete.
Afterwaitingabout30secondsforthatsequencetorun,presstheDirectionbutton
againtotriggerthesecondsequenceofFYS/PSA.
Afterabout30seconds,presstheDirectionbuttonagaintotriggerthethird
FYS/PSAsequence.
Again,afterallowingabout30secondsforthatsequencetorun,presstheDirection
Eachsequencedescribedbelowwillplayaslongasitisleft
on,randomlygeneratingsounds,butbesuretoallowapproximately30seconds
betweenthebuttonpushesdescribedbelowtoallowtheFYS/PSAsufficienttimeto
runthrougheachsequence.

FYS/PSAwillcontinue,andwithinafewseconds,theenginewillstartandmove
outonitsownatthecurrentthrottlesetting,inthesamedirectionitwastraveling
whenyoubeganthesequence.Oncethebellturnsoff,theoperatorregainscontrol
ofthetransformer'sBellandbuttonsandcanringthebellorblowthe
horn/whistleasusual.
YoucanterminateFYS/PSAatanytimebyturningoffpowertothetrackfor
15seconds.
YoudonothavetobeinForwardtouseFYS/PSA.Attheconclusionofthe
fullsequence,thetrainwillpullawayfromthestationinwhateverdirection
youweregoingwhenyouactivatedthefeature.
YoucanuseFYS/PSAevenifyouaredouble-headingwithanotherengine.If
thesecondengineisnotequippedwithProto-Sound2.0,youmustremember
nottoleavethethrottleatahighvoltagelevelonceyouhavestoppedthe
enginetoruntheFYS/PSA.Otherwise,theenginewithoutFYS/PSAwill
beginvibratingonthetrackasitsmotorsstraintomovethetrain,sincethey
cannotbeautomaticallydisabledduringtheFYS/PSAcycle(orifanoriginal
Proto-Soundengine,FYS/PSAaretriggereddifferentlyandthatengine's
motor-disablefeaturewillnotbeactivewhenyourun FYS/PSAinProto-
Sound2.0).
FYS/PSAcanbetriggeredfromNeutral.Itwilloperatethesameasif
triggeredwhileinmotionexceptthat,attheconclusionoftheFYS/PSA,the
enginewilldepartinthenextdirectionoftravel,asopposedtothedirectionit
wastravelingbeforeenteringNeutral.
Thislocomotiveisequippedwithoneormorecoil-woundProto-Couplersforremote
uncouplingaction.BecauseProto-CouplersarecontrolledthroughtheProto-Sound2.0
microprocessor,theydonotrequireanuncouplingtracksectionormodificationtoyour
layouttofunction.Youcanfireacouplerfromneutralorwhileinmotion.Usethecode
shownbelow(andinthechartonpage7)tofirethecoupler(s).
Tofiretherearcoupler,quicklytaptheBellbuttononcefollowedbythreequicktapsof
theHorn/Whistlebutton,allowingapproximatelsecondtolapsebetweeneachquick
buttonpress.Thesoundoftheliftbarandairlinedepletionwillplay,andtheknuckle
willbereleased.

M.T.H.enginesequippedwithProto-Sound2.0havespeedcontrolcapabilitiesthatallow
theenginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,much
likeanautomobilecruisecontrol.Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheengine
willmaintainthespeedyouset.
Whiletheengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcan
opttoturnitoff.Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincrease
asittravelsdownward.Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileonthe
run.Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeed
controlisonthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelfor
operationwithspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments.Whenspeedcontrolis
off,thevolumewilldroptoallowforbetterlowvoltageoperation.
puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe
transformer'shorn/whistlebuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,
allowingapproximatelsecondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress.Repeatthe1
horn/whistle,2bellscodetoreturnittotheothercondition.Youwillwanttodothis
duringtheinitialneutraluponstart-upifyouevercouplethisenginetoanotherengine
thatisnotequippedwithspeedcontroltoavoiddamagingthemotorsineitherengine.
Eachtimeyoushutdowntheenginecompletely,itwillautomaticallyturnspeedcontrol
on.
Youcanlockyourengine intoadirection(forward,neutral,orreverse)sothatitwillnot
changedirections.Todothis,puttheengineintothedirectionyouwant(orintoneutral
tolockitintoneutral),runitataveryslowcrawl(asslowlyasitwillmovewithout
halting),andquicklybutfirmlytaptheHorn/Whistlebuttononcefollowedbythreequick
tapsoftheBellbutton,allowingapproximatelsecondtolapsebetweeneachquick
buttonpress.Twohorn/whistleblastswillindicatethattheenginehasmadethechange.
Theenginewillnotchangedirection(includinggoingintoneutral)untilyourepeatthe1
horn/whistle,3bellscodetoreturntheenginetoitsnormalcondition,eveniftheengine
iskeptwithoutpowerforextendedperiodsoftime.

Uselighthouseholdoil,suchasthatfoundinM.T.H.'smaintenance
kit.Donotoveroil.Useonlyadroportwooneachpivotpoint.
Thelocomotive’sinternalgearingwasgreasedatthefactoryandshouldnotneed
additionalgreaseuntilafter50hoursofoperationoroneyear,whichevercomes
first.Followthegreasinginstructionsbelow.Notethatinsometightlypacked
enginesyoumayneedtomoveinternalcomponentstemporarilyinordertoaccess
the gears.
1.Toaccessthegearbox,removethecabfromthechassisbyunscrewingthebody
mountscrewsasseeninFigure4andliftingthecabfromthechassis.
2.Oncethecabisremoved,removethetrucksbyunscrewingtheblackPhillips
motormountscrewlocatedontheundersideofthedrivetrucks(seeFig.5).
3.Oncethemotormountscrewhasbeenremoved,pullthemotorawayfromthe
truckblockandlightlycoatthemotorwormgearandbronzedrivegear(inthe
truckblock)withgrease.
4.Reassemblethetruckandmotor,beingcarefulnottopinchanywiresbetween
thetruckblockandmotormount.

body,beingcarefulthatthewireharnessesarenotcaughtbetweenthechassisand
body,andreinstallthebodymountscrews.
Lubricatetheoutsidetruckblockidleranddrivegearswithgrease.Usethe
diagramshowninFigure5belowasaguideandaddgreasetothepointsmarked.
Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickupsfordirtandbuildup,which
cancausepoorelectricalcontactandtractionandprematurelywearoutthe
neoprenetractiontires.Wheelsandtirescanbecleanedusingdenatured(not
rubbing)alcoholappliedwithacottonswab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluidordenatured(notrubbing)
alcoholandacleanrag.Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack,
turningtheragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothontherails.
Thereafter,keepaneyeonthetrackandcleanitwhenitgetsdirtytoensuregood
electricalcontactandtolengthenthelifeofthetires.

Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresoneach
poweredtruckblock.Whilethesetiresareextremelydurable,theymay
occasionallyneedreplacement.
First,removethetrucksidesfromthetruckblock.Todothis,turnyourengine
upsidedownandremovethetrucksidesfromthetrucks.Oncethetrucksides
havebeenremoved:
1.Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletelyremovedfromthegrooveinthedrive
wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains.
2.Slipthenewtireontothewheel.Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmall
flathead screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel.
3.Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,youwillneedtoremove
andreinstallthetire.Otherwiseyourenginewillwobblewhileoperating.
4.Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove.Usearazorbladetotrim
awayanyexcesstirethatwillnotseatinsidethegrooveproperly.
5.Reassembleinthereverseorder.

ThespecialNiCad2.4vself-chargingbatteryrechargescontinuouslyduringtrain
operationandshouldlastforuptofiveyears.Thebatteryisadrybatterythat
shouldnotleakorcauseanydamagetoyourengine.Dependinguponwhenyour
enginewasbuilt,itmayneedtobechargedrightoutofthebox.Ifenginesounds
seemdistortedorgarbledatlowvoltagesorbecomesilentwhenpowerfromthe
transformeristurnedoff,testthebatterytodeterminewhetheritshouldbe
rechargedorreplaced.
Puttheengineinneutraland
leavethetrackvoltageat10-12volts

thebatterychargehasrundownandcan

smokeunit,besureitisturnedoff).
UseM.T.H.'sbatteryrecharger(soldseparately)thatplugsintoawall
outletandaspecialportundertheenginetorechargethebattery
overnightwithoutleavingitonthetrack.
Ifthesoundsarenotimprovedattheendofthe15-minutetest charge,
