4. User instructions
It is very important you teach yourself the right and safe user instructions. Therefore, you need to know all the
components of the wheelchair, described in this user manual. Always check an expert for support by developing the
right and safe methods regarding to your physical possibilities to use your wheelchair.
4.1 Balance
Daily operations such as getting on and o the wheelchair, reaching and bending in wheelchair will cause change
the weight distribution and the centre of gravity of you and your wheelchair. You will need to perform these
movements and techniques as shown below.
4.1.1 Getting in and out of the wheelchair
Getting in and out of the wheelchair is a common operation. The diculties of entering and exiting depend on your
physical capabilities. In this user manual, we describe the actions that must be followed when you want to get in or
out the wheelchair without help. When you can’t do it no longer independently, we recommend that you comply
with an occupational therapist to discuss your options and determine how you can get the best on and o the
wheelchair.
Get in the wheelchair
Before you get in your wheelchair, you must make sure the wheelchair is on a at surface. Also, the wheelchair
must be put on the brakes and the legrests need to ip sidewards. Make sure you are as close as possible to the
wheelchair en put the castors in forward direction. Now you can, leaning on the armrests, make the transfer to the
wheelchair.
Get out of the wheelchair
When you want to get out of the wheelchair, you must follow the same instructions for getting in to the wheelchair.
Make sure you are as close as possible to the wheelchair en put the castors in forward direction. Also, the
wheelchair must be put on the brakes and the legrests need to ip sidewards. Now you can, leaning on the
armrests, make the transfer out o the wheelchair.
4.2 Bending and/or reaching
It may occur you are in your wheelchair and you need te get someting. This can be next to you, but also in front of
or behind you. To avoid tilting your wheelchair or your wheelchair falls backwards, below we describe how you can
bend and / or reach out the best in your wheelchair.
4.2.1 Bending and/or reaching forwards
If you want to get something that is in front of your wheelchair, please follow the steps below.
Make sure that you are as close as possible to the object;
Make sure the front wheels are turned forward. If not, go forwards and then backwards to turn the wheels
fully to the front;
Make sure the wheelchair is put on the brakes on both sides;
You can now move towards the target with caution to keep the wheelchair from falling.

4.2.2 Bending and/or reaching to the side
If you want to get something that is next to you or your wheelchair, please follow the steps below.
Make sure you are as close to the object with your wheelchair. Use the rear wheels of the wheelchair as a
target;
Make sure the front wheels are turned forward. If not, go forwards and then backwards to turn the wheels
fully to the front;
Make sure the wheelchair is put on the brakes on both sides;
You can now move to the side without the risk of losing the balance. Make sure you move along the
wheelchair as close as possible while lifting.
4.2.3 Bending and/or reaching backwards
If you want to get something that is behind you or your wheelchair, please follow the steps below.
Make sure you are as close to the object with your wheelchair. Make use of your rear wheels of the
wheelchair. For example, place it against a closet;
Do not put the wheelchair on the brakes. If you lose your balance you better drive backwards then ip
backwards;
You can now bend backwards without having to risk losing the balance. But do not bend too far backwards.
Then the wheelchair will tilt as well.
4.3 Going on and of increases
It may happen that you have to go on or o an increase with your wheelchair. In addition, we describe in this user
manual rst how to do this independently and then how you can do this with an attendant.
4.3.1 Going on an increase
If you want to go on an increase you have to do it in a forward motion. Make sure your weight is, as far as it is
possible, brought forward by bending over. By now making a so-called “wheely” , the casters are lifted at the front.
This way you can get over an increase in your wheelchair.
You can also go on an increase with your supervisor. This can be done in two ways.
1. Your attendant should place the wheelchair in forward motion for going on the increase. By pressing the on
the handles, the casters at the front wheel will go o the ground. Simultaneously, your attendant should put
his foot on the so-called stepper. There will now create a leverage eect and so the wheelchair can be driven
on the increase.
2. Your attendant should put the wheelchair in the backward movement for going on the increase. By sitting as
far as possible in the wheelchair and slightly tilt the wheelchair backwards, your attendant can pull the chair
on the increase. Your attendant should not lower the wheelchair until the casters are on the increase.
Warning
You should only go on an increase after you discussed with a specialist, such as an occupational therapist, how to
do this best.

User manual | Excel G-Evolution
4.3.2 Going o an increase
If you want to go o an increase yourself, you should always do this backwards. When you do this forward, there is a
risk of falling over with your wheelchair. However, you should practice with an occupational therapist before you go
o an increase with your wheelchair yourself.
We advise you to go o an increase with your attendant. Your attendant drives your wheelchair to the edge of the
increase. Now the user has to sit back and attendant has to tilt the wheelchair backwards. When the wheelchair is
balanced your attendant can slowly set the wheelchair o the increase. The wheelchair should only be further used
if the casters touch the ground again.
4.4 Going on and o inclines
Most people can climb a short and not too steep incline itself. This depends on your physical capabilities and the
degree of the incline. Most people also develop methods to go on and of an incline. If it is necessary you should
stop during going on or o the incline, do not make sudden movements that can cause you to fall over.
4.4.1 Going on an incline
When you go on an incline yourself, we advise you to bend your upper body forwards. This allows you to transfer
the heaviest point forward and it is easier to get on an incline. We also recommend you to attach the anti-tip to the
wheelchair when going up an incline. This will increase the safety during going on an incline. It is also important you
don’t care extra weight as bags on your wheelchair. This allows the center of gravity is behind the wheelchair and
the chance of tipping increases.
If your attendant push you up, he or she must be aware that sucient strength is required.
Tip
Make sure the incline is inspected to climb up and down. That way you will know what to expect and you can safely
go upwards or downwards.
Warning
Always be careful when getting on and o an incline. An incline steeper than 5° is already dangerous to go on or o
with your wheelchair.

4.4.2 Going o an incline
Make sure that the feetrests of the wheelchair is at least seven centimeters from the ground. You will always keep
your face forward as you go o an incline. However, never lean forward when you go o an incline. This may result
in a forward tilt of the wheelchair. In order to increase the stability you can better slightly lean backwards.
To maintain control over your wheelchair, it is important you do not go down to quickly. You can controle the
speed by the amount of grip that you apply to the hoops of the wheelchair. In this action the hoops slide through
your hands and will cause friction. To avoid burning your hands, we recommend that you wear gloves. Do not use
the wheel brakes during going o the incline. These brakes are only suitable for use when stationary. Avoid also
suddenly change of direction during going o an incline. This increases the chance that you fall over.
If your attendant supports you when going o an incline, he or she must be aware that a considerable traction
should be exercised.
4.5 Going on and o stairs
Stairs are one of the largest obstacles for people who use a wheelchair. However, it is possible to, together with two
attendants, go on and o a stairs with your wheelchair. You and your attendants must be aware of the rather heavy
weight which has te be moved.
4.5.1 Going on a stair
When you want to go on a stairs, you need to go up backwards. We advise if you want to climb the stairs with
a wheelchair you will do this with the help of a minimum of two attendants. One attendant on the front of the
wheelchair and one attendant on the back of wheelchair. The attendant at the back of the wheelchair grabs the
push handles and let the wheelchairtip backwards until it in balance. When the wheel is in balance the attendant at
the front of the wheelchair needs to grab the side frames. You are now in position to climb the stairs. The attendant
on the front pushes the side frames up until they are above the rst step and the attendant on the back makes the
rst step on the stairs. Repeat this technique until the last step of the stair. You can let the front castors down when
the attendant on the front has taken the last step.
Warning
If you go on a stairway with your wheelchair, you should take a maximum of one step at a time. This prevents the
risk of falling down the stairs in your wheelchair.

4.5.2 Going o a stair
To go down a stairs you follow basically the same operations as going on the stairs. One attendant on the front of
the wheelchair and one attendant on the back of wheelchair. The attendant at the back of the wheelchair grabs the
push handles and let the wheelchairtip backwards until it in balance. When the wheel is in balance the attendant at
the front of the wheelchair needs to grab the side frames. You are now in position to climb the stairs.
Now, the attendant on the front lifts the side frames until they are above the rst step and the attendant on the
back makes the rst step on the stairs. Repeat this technique until the last step of the stair. You can let the front
castors down when the attendant on the front has taken the last step.
Warning
If your attendant grabs the wheelchair to go on or o a stair, then your attendant should never do this on the
legrests. The legrests are not strong enough for this.
