Catalonians are proud of their region and with reason, its often
raw beauty serving as an open invitation to explore. The fascinating
landscape of the Pyrenees provides the perfect backdrop for short
trips and extended tours on your BMW R 1200 ST. The border
region between Spain and France extends over 440 kilometres
in length and is 130 kilometres wide, but its about much more
than figures: breathtaking mountain passes, ravines and – above all –
kilometre after kilometre of some of the best-laid roads that you
have to experience on your motorcycle.
When planning your sports-style tour, it’s important to remember
that the Spanish side of the mountains is much drier than the
French. Even in September, daytime temperatures of over 30 °C
are common, while the nights are noticeably cooler. Because many
passes lie at a height of over 2,000 metres, when riding at the
beginning and end of the year, you should enquire whether they
may have been closed due to snow. And don’t forget: the BMW
Motorrad Navigator II plus is the safest, smartest way to navigate
the magnificent roads that lead through the countless attractions
of the Pyrenees.

Within the R 1200 ST beats a powerful, sporty 1,170-cc boxer
heart. Despite the incorporation of an additional counterbalance
shaft, lightweight construction techniques ensure greatly reduced
weight. The engine is equipped with a comprehensive sensor sys-
tem which, together with its BMS-K engine electronics, delivers
enhanced performance while lowering fuel consumption. Thanks
to the same engine electronics, the BMW R 1200 ST has no need
for a separate choke. Knock sensors and twin-spark ignition ensu-
re optimum combustion and smooth operation at constant speeds
and low revolutions. The engine of the BMW R 1200 ST delivers
outstanding performance and a greatly enhanced riding experi-
ence. Thanks to a counterbalance shaft, annoying vibrations are
effect ively eradicated. In addition to the power and dynamism
generated by this characterful power plant, the rider’s emotion
levels receive a significant boost, too.

The BMW R 1200 ST stands out on account of its low weight,
high performance and sporty riding dynamics. Weighing just
229 kg* but generating 81 kw (110 bhp), the R 1200 ST simply
powers ahead. As it does so, the familiar virtues of the boxer
principle become even clearer: with maximum torque of 115 Nm
and smooth, yet powerful thrust from idle, the boxer engine in
the R 1200 ST is an impressive performer.

Doing what comes naturally. Environmental protection.
Double ignition and BMS-K engine management ensure particular-
ly even, efficient combustion, a necessary precondition if low fuel
consumption and exhaust emission values are to be achieved.
In addition, two lambda sensors combined with a regulated 3-way
catalytic converter act to further reduce emissions.
Gear shifting simply couldn’t be easier.
The various technical features of the BMW R 1200 ST’s gearbox
combine to offer riders numerous advantages: the helical cut
gears engage particularly softly, thus reducing running noise. Gear
changes are initiated using a special sliding sleeve; combined with
the optimised selection mechanism, this makes for easier, more
precise gear shifting, involving shorter gear paths and requiring
less effort.

The chassis: the perfect interface between the rider and the road.
The BMW Motorrad Telelever. Sports-style touring.
The latest generation of boxer engines employs an especially light
version of the patented BMW Motorrad Telelever, combining the
advantages of a telescopic fork with swinging arm construction.
Working together with the central strut, the Telelever maintains
optimum front wheel guidance at all times while out on the road.
It ensures a particularly sensitive response, high longitudinal
stiffness and optimum riding and steering stability, even at top
speeds. In addition, brake dive is kept to a minimum, meaning the
BMW Motorrad Integral ABS has perfect conditions in which to
perform its work.
Keep everything under control.
With the BMW Motorrad Paralever.
The BMW Motorrad Paralever combines the functions of rear wheel
guidance and drive transfer. The Paralever brace, which serves to
minimise load change reactions, is situated over the swinging arm,
for better ground clearance. The reduced gear rotation speed
allows for a smaller, lighter rear wheel differential. Similarly, the
concave rear axle is of an innovative, lightweight construction and
works together with the weight-optimised swinging arm to signi -
cantly reduce unsprung mass. With the BMW Motorrad Telelever,
the chassis reacts quicker to jolts. Suspension and damping is
handled by a WAD strut (travel-dependent damping). Using this
system, compression damping increases with compression, making
for highly-sensitive responsiveness and stability, even on poor
roads. The overall performance of the chassis provides optimum
comfort and perfect road grip, whether you are riding alone, or with
a partner and a full load of luggage.
Strength from within. Shaft drive.
The shaft drive is incorporated into the Paralever system, its low
weight contributing to the R 1200 ST’s sporty responsiveness
and performance. It is extremely durable and requires very little
maintenance.

A journey into the future. With the latest in technology and design.
Sports-style touring. Sports-style braking.
The R 1200 ST is equipped with the tried-and-tested BMW Motor-
rad EVO braking system. Both front disc brakes have a diameter
of 320 mm. Steel flex brake lines create a stable, lasting pressure
point in order to cope with the immense deceleration forces.
The brake lining distributor for the two front callipers is elegant and
integrated into the fork brace. The partially integral version of BMW
Motorrad’s proven Integral ABS II system is available as an option.
When fitted, braking can be applied to both front and rear wheel
via the hand brake lever, while the footbrake applies pressure only
to the rear. The system’s brake booster guarantees a quick build-up
of braking pressure, excellent control and optimum braking perfor-
mance with minimum rider effort.
Shaped to suit the rider.
At BMW Motorrad, the rider is at the centre of everything we do.
And as every rider knows, the wider the seat, especially towards
the front, the harder it is to reach the floor with your feet – whatever
the seat height. That’s why the seat of the R 1200 ST has been
optimised for rider step length: markedly slimmer towards the front,
giving more freedom of movement when riding and making it easier
to reach the floor when at a standstill; while broad at the rear, for
more comfort. Seats can be supplied as standard in either the
810 mm or the 830 mm version.
The ergonomical triangle of footrest, seat and handlebar is so desi-
gned as to guarantee the rider a relaxed, fatigue-free experience
during long and sports-style journeys.
Perfected in a wind tunnel, the windshield has three manually adju-
stable settings, not only offering riders of any size outstanding pro-
tection against wind and rain, but also significantly reducing noise
while riding.
The handlebar grips on the R 1200 ST can be set in three positi-
ons, making it possible to adjust them over a range of 25 mm to
match the rider’s preferred seating position and riding style. Add
to this the adjustable seat and the rider has freedom to choose
whether to adopt an active, sporty approach or a more relaxed

touring posture. The reach of the brake and clutch levers can also
be adjusted to taste, while the relatively small amount of force nee-
ded to operate the brake, gas and clutch controls makes it easier
to maintain control of the motorcycle and actively contributes to a
safer ride.
Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA).
Up until now, different road surfaces, varying loads and individual
riding styles all made manual suspension adjustment a tricky busi-
ness. Achieving optimum balance in the preloading of springs and
suspension requires a great deal of experience and judgement. But
the BMW R 1200 ST does away with manual suspension tuning,
re- placing it with the Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) sys-
tem*. The settings selected are displayed on the Info Flatscreen.
Load settings.
When the motorcycle is stationary with the engine running, the
rider can adjust suspension preload to the level of load (rider only,
rider with luggage or rider with passenger and luggage) at the
touch of a button.
* Available as an optional extra.
Riding style settings.
ESA makes it possible for riders to adjust the chassis while riding
to suit their own personal riding style and road conditions. At the
touch of a button, riders are able to choose between three settings
(Normal, Comfort and Sport) for front and rear suspension. The
damper settings – rebound at the front, rebound and compression
at the rear – are then adjusted automatically.
Perfect road holding, all the time.
With its easy operation and optimised chassis tuning, ESA makes a
significant contribution to rider safety and comfort. It is exclusive to
BMW Motorrad.

Thanks to its fully-lined interior this tank bag is completely
waterproof. Te on coating prevents dirt build-up. The
hardware compartment is equipped with a viewing window
on the cover. Can be used at the same time as the BMW
