Notes on operating instructions
The following reading aids are used to simplify these operating instructions:
1. requests you to do something.
identifies a list.
1 gives you additional information on the current subject.
A
identifies a safety or warning notice. This contains important information on how to use
your unit safely. Failure to observe this information may result in a risk of damage or injury.
Therefore, please observe this information with particular care.
1 The two steps of highlighting a menu entry with the cursor followed by pressing the
OK button on the remote control are referred to in the sections below as "selecting" a
function / option.
WARNING:
Important information for safe use
A
Make all inputs via the remote control or to the mobile phone only when the vehicle is
stationary, or have the passenger make them. Otherwise, you may endanger the occupants
and other road users.
A
Making a phone call while driving can greatly reduce your attention and distract you
from the traffic situation. In order to avoid endangering the occupants and other road users,
the driver should not make phone calls while driving. Observe local regulations relating to
making phone calls in the vehicle.
A
Switch off the telephone at petrol stations, chemical plants, fuel depots or similar facili-
ties, or leave it switched off.
A
Operation of the telephone near the GSM antenna can cause malfunction of medicinal
devices such as heart pacemakers or hearing aids.
A Do not touch the GSM antenna during a call.
Advantages of the hands-free unit
In addition to the typical advantages of hands-free units, the VDO Dayton hands free
system offers the following advantages among others:
comfortable operation of the mobile phone via the clearly legible display screen and
the navigation system IR remote control.
direct dialling of displayed call numbers for points of interests (depending on map CD)
automatic switchover to phone mode for incoming calls and switching back to naviga-
tion at the end of a phone call
use of the SIM-card phone memory
reading, writing and sending short messages (SMS) via the large display

General information
Mobile phones
The hands free system is only suitable for use with mobile phones specified on the phone
cradle or phone cradle packaging.
A Before inserting a mobile phone, remove the protective cap for the antenna connection
at the phone and if necessary the protective sleeve.
A
Do not attempt to insert other mobile phones into the holder. This can cause serious
damage to the hands-free unit and to the mobile phone.
1 For operation with the hands-free unit, a volume default setting should be performed
on the mobile phone (vehicle default setting).
Special features with Siemens C/M/S 35, C/ME/S 45 and SL 42/45 mobile phones:
The mobile phone does not switch off automatically when the ignition is switched off,
but only approx. 15 minutes later or approx. 15 minutes following the last operation
of the hands-free unit.
When all tones are switched off on the mobile phone, the ringing tones are also
switched off in the hands-free unit (does not apply to C/ME/S 45).
If the phone has switched itself off automatically in the holder, it may have to be
switched back on manually.
The mobile phone is not recharged when switched off.
If the mobile phone is removed from the holder while it is ringing, the call is accepted
automatically.
When connecting the hands-free unit to the MC 5400 (C/M/S 35 and SL 42/45 only):
The mobile phone is not recharged via the hands-free unit in GSM/modem mode (e.g.
when sending/receiving faxes).
Special features with Nokia 6210/6310/7110mobile phones:
Nokia 7110 only: Operation of the mobile phone with the hands-free unit is only pos-
sible from software version 4.88. This version can be called up via control code *#0000#,
if required. Please contact your Nokia dealer if a software update is required.
If the system no longer reacts when the relevant buttons on the remote control or on
the mobile phone itself are pressed, communication between the mobile phone and
the hands-free unit has been interrupted. Switch the telephone off and back on again
(if possible) or briefly remove the battery from the mobile phone and then re-install.
Then switch on the telephone again.
Mobile phone displays concerning new SMS messages or a "Missed call" are not delet-
ed after reading out the SMS or after calling up the "Missed call" register.
Nokia 7110 only: Adjusting the volume is only possible when no numbers or characters
have been entered in the mobile phone (e.g. when listening to the mail box).
If numbers have been entered into the mobile phone (control codes/DTMF numbers,
e.g., when using the mailbox) or are visible on the display, these are selected as a new
call number when the symbol (alternate) is activated. Delete numbers beforehand
or end existing call, if necessary.
Nokia 6310 only: Only supported as of mobile phone software version 4.20.
The volume control, alternate and automatic switch on/off functions are not support-
ed.

OPERATION
10
Mute function
When the 'mute' signal is connected to the 'mute' input (if present) of the radio, the radio
is automatically muted when making a call with the hands-free unit.
Display language
The language for the screen displays and for the system messages can be selected in the
"Settings" menu. See "System Settings", page 24. English, French, German, Dutch, Italian,
Spanish, Swedish and Danish may be selected.
Putting into operation
There must be a suitable mobile phone in the holder in order to use the hands-free unit.
Switching on
The hands-free unit is switched on automatically with the ignition or can be switched on
again by switching on the mobile phone in the holder within approx. 15 minutes of the
ignition being switched off.
1
11
1 The following descriptions with regards to displays, messages etc. only apply
after switching from navigation to phone mode.
If there is no mobile phone in the holder, "Phone out" is displayed on the monitor. Place
the telephone in the holder.
1 On some mobile phones (see associated operating instructions), a special symbol (car
symbol) or a hands-free message is displayed when the phone is inserted in the holder of
the hands-free unit.
Whenever the system is not functional (no SIM card in phone, PIN number not entered, no
reception or during system initialisation), "Phone not ready" is displayed on the monitor.
Switching off
In stand-by mode:
After switching the ignition off, the hands-free unit remains in stand-by mode for a
further 15 minutes. During this time, the phone remains connected to the network and
the PIN remains active. If the mobile phone remains in the holder, recharging continues.
After 15 minutes, the hands-free unit and the phone are switched off.
If a button is pressed on the phone while the message "Display will power off if not used"
is displayed on the remote control, the hands-free unit can still be operated via the remote
control and display. If no button is pressed during the message, the mobile phone can only
be operated directly via the phone's keypad.
1 Special feature for Nokia mobile phones:
If a button is pressed on the mobile phone while the switch-off message appears in the
phone display, the phone remains switched on while the hands-free unit is switched off
after 15 minutes.
During a call:
After switching the ignition off, the hands-free unit remains switched on until the call is
ended.
