SAFETY
A series of messages are used throughout this manual to alert you to
potentially hazardous conditions. These messages are explained
below:
WARNING -indicates the presence of a hazard that can cause
severe personal injury or loss of life, or substantial
property damage if the warning is ignored.
CAUTION - indicates the presence of a hazard that will or can
cause minor personal injury or property damage if
the warning is ignored.
NOTICE - calls attention to practices that could adversely affect
equipment operation if instructions are not followed
exactly.
Always use safe operating procedures when running your folder.
Observe the following practices:
To protect against electric shock, the machine should only be
plugged into a properly grounded wall outlet. The wall outlet
should be near the machine and easily accessible.
Insert the power cord into power inlet at the rear of the machine
and the other end into the wall outlet.
DO NOT use an adapter plug on the line cord or wall outlet.
DO NOT remove the ground pin from the line cord.
Avoid using wall outlets that are controlled by wall switches or
shared with other equipment.
DO NOT route the power cord over sharp edges or trapped be-
tween furniture.
Insure there is no strain on the power cord where it becomes
jammed between the equipment, walls or furniture.
Be certain the area in front of the wall receptacle into which the
machine is plugged is free from obstruction.
Model 1810 Operator Guide

DO NOT remove covers. This machine cabinet serves to enclose
hazardous parts. If the machine has been dropped or has other-
wise been stressed in any way, report it to your Pitney Bowes
Customer Service Representative.
To reduce the risk of fire and/or electrical shock, do no attempt to
disassemble this machine. If service is required, contact your
Pitney Bowes Customer Service Representative who will discon-
nect before servicing to prevent electrical shock.
DO NOT remove the cautionary label on the equipment that states:
Caution! Exposed rollers can cause personal injury.
Keep hands, long hair, jewelry and loose clothing away
from this area.
The unit is heavy and should be set in place by someone trained in
the proper techniques of lifting and authorized by the owner's
insurance carrier.
Insure the unit is on a stable table surface so that the table cannot
tip over if someone leans on the edge of the table.
Keep loose clothing, jewelry and long hair away from all moving
parts.
Avoid touching moving parts or materials while the machine is in
use. When clearing a jam, be sure the machine mechanisms
come to a stop and disconnect power.
To prevent overheating, do not cover the vent openings.
All areas of the machine requiring disassembly or removal of
covers should be accessed only by your Pitney Bowes Customer
Service Representative.
Read all instructions before attempting to operate the equipment.
In addition, follow any specific occupational safety and health
standards for your workplace or area.

GENERAL
The Model 1810 Folder is a desktop folding machine designed for
the low-volume mailer. The folder is ideal for mailers whose normal
usage is about 20 sheets per day or those who have monthly peak
loads of under 1000 sheets.
The Model 1810 Folder can fold papers in letter, legal, statement,
and invoice sizes. The pieces to be folded can contain from one to
three sheets of a nominal 20# base paper. A single dial allows you
to select the desired fold based on paper size. Refer to chart on
page 6.
For single-sheet folding, you can use either the automatic feeding
function by placing the single sheets in the paper cassette or by
manually placing the sheet into the manual feed opening. For pieces
that are stapled or contain more than one sheet, you must feed
them manually. The following figure shows the major components
of the folder.

SETUP AND INSTALLATION
After opening both boxes, perform the following procedure to install
the folder.
1. Place the machine on the suggested working surface. This
surface should be a sturdy table. NOTICE: Don’t block the
sides or vented openings on your machine or use it over a
radiator or heat register.
2. Be sure the On/Off switch is Off ("O" side depressed) and insert
the power cord into the machine. Plug the other end into a 120
Vac, 60 cycle outlet. CAUTION: Only use a three prong outlet.
Never use an adapter or cut the ground prong from the plug.
3. Configure the paper cassette (if required) for the length of paper
to be used by moving the paper stop (shown on page 5) to the
correct position. Push the tabs toward the center to release the
stop and then insert it in the proper location. There is also a
reversible tray label. You can now load the paper in the tray.
4. Insert the paper cassette into the folder. Hold the cassette
firmly in both hands and slide the cassette into the opening in
the right-hand cover. Firmly push the cassette in as far as it will
go. You must lift up slightly on the end while pushing inwards.
Once the tray is in all the way, it should be lowered into place.
5. Install the wire stacker tray extension as illustrated on page 5.

OPERATION
CAUTION
This machine contains moving parts that can
catch hair, loose clothing, and jewelry. Keep
these articles clear during operation.
The machine can be operated in the Automatic feed (Paper cas-
sette) mode or Manual feed mode. Use the automatic feed mode if
you have a lot of single-sheets to feed of the same size. Use the
Manual feed mode if you have only a few sheets, multi-sheets, or
stapled sheets to feed.
AUTOMATIC FEED (PAPER CASSETTE) MODE
1. Select the type of fold you want from the table in this manual or
from the fold selection chart on the machine.
2. Turn the Fold selection knob to the number that corresponds to
the type of fold you want. The Fold selection knob has been
designed to have a stiff resistance while being rotated to pre-
vent the knob from moving while paper is being folded. The
knob will stop securely at the desired fold setting.
3. Configure the paper cassette as required (11 inch or 14 inch
paper). Set the length of the paper cassette by moving the
paper stop in the cassette. There is also a reversible tray label
on the end of the cassette.
4. Place up to the maximum number of sheets of paper in the feed
cassette, in the direction specified in the Fold Selection Table,
for the selected fold. Do not go past the fill line in the cassette
as overloading may produce poor quality folds or cause paper to
jam and misfeed. Make sure the front corners of the paper are
under the triangular shaped metal pieces at the corners of the
cassette.
5. Firmly insert the loaded cassette into its opening until you feel it
lock into the position. If you should experience crooked folds,
check if cassette is locked in properly by pulling on it to assure it
is in tight.
Model 1810 Operator Guide
SV 40115
10
6. Turn the power switch on and the paper will begin to fold. The
folded paper is deposited on the catcher tray.
7. When the 1810 completes the folding of all the paper in the
cassette, turn the power off and remove the folded paper.
MANUAL FEED MODE
1. Select the type of fold you want from the table in this manual or
from the fold selection chart on the machine.
2. Turn the Fold selection knob to the number that corresponds to
the type of fold that fits your application. The Fold selection
knob has been designed to have a stiff resistance while being
rotated to prevent the knob from moving while paper is being
folded. The knob will stop securely at the desired fold setting.
3. Raise the catcher tray wire out of the way and turn the power
switch on.
4. Carefully insert the paper to be folded into the manual feed
opening using the side walls of the catcher tray to help guide the
sheets. Be sure to insert it in the direction indicated in the Fold
Selection Table. The folded paper is deposited on the catcher
tray. NOTE: Any time a staple is used, it must be on the trailing
edge of the paper and parallel to the trailing edge.
Small material (5 1/2" x 8") must be fed under the guide wire to
prevent skewing.
5. Remove the folded paper before feeding the next piece of
paper.

TROUBLESHOOTING
The 1810 has been designed to give many hours of trouble free
service, but in the event of a paper misfeed or stall, the motor may
stop and be unable to clear the stoppage. In these instances,
perform the following instructions to remove the paper.
1. Turn the 1810 off and unplug the power cord.
2. Remove the paper cassette.
3. Turn the Manual release knob, located on the rear of the ma-
chine, in the direction of least resistance using your free hand to
assist in paper removal.
If you are unable to remove the jam, remove the Catcher tray
panel and check to see if the upper buckle chute contains the
jammed paper. If it does, place a slight downward pressure on
the paper through the access opening while turning the Manual
release knob to advance the paper enough to allow clearing. If
the upper buckle chute does not contain the jammed paper,
rotate the Fold Selection knob to position 6 or 7 while turning
the Manual release knob to advance the paper enough to allow
clearing.
4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power switch to
assure the motor runs free.
5. Insert a single sheet of paper into the manual feed opening and
check for proper folding.
6. Turn the power switch off and insert the cassette.
7. Before turning the machine back on, make sure the paper
you’re folding is flat, without curls or turned up edges.
8. If you are unable to remove the jam, or if it repeatedly occurs,
call your Pitney Bowes service department for assistance.
If multiple sheet folds separate or hesitate during the folding pro-
cess, clean the rollers to remove excess buildup (see Maintenance
section).

MAINTENANCE
NOTICE
Use only recommended cleaning solutions. Do
not use any volatile cleaners.
Keep the outside surface of your 1810 clean by using a dampened
cloth and a water-based mild liquid or spray cleaner.
The rubber rollers may become glazed over a period of time. To
clean the rollers, first unplug the machine from the wall. Then use a
PB approved roller cleaner (Call the PB Supply line at 1-800-243-
7824 and order the Multipurpose Cleaning Kit (F902-0). This is an
approved alcohol wipe to clean the feed/fold rollers only and a clean
cloth to remove the glazing and built up ink.) NOTE: Do not use any
type of solvent or harsh cleaners on the rubber rollers.
Use mild soap and water only to clean the covers.
Do not attempt to service the Model 1810 yourself as opening or
removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage and moving
parts. Refer all servicing to a trained Pitney Bowes Customer
Service Representative.
Additional paper cassettes may be ordered through the PB Supply
line at 1-800-243-7824. The paper cassette part number is 658-3.

FORM SPECIFICATIONS
Material Handling Notes
Material handling problems with automatic mail handling equipment
are often due to distortion (warpage, curl, sticking, etc.). This can
be a result of poor packaging, improper handling or environmental
extremes during manufacture, transit, or storage. This is particularly
true of self-sealing forms, which contain glue that is extremely
sensitive to temperature and humidity.
Fortunately, there are a number of easy and effective measures you
can take to minimize problems, improve production and get the
most out of your Pitney Bowes equipment.
Be Sure Forms Meet Our Printed Specifications
Our equipment is designed to handle a certain range of material.
Forms which fall outside this range may run poorly or not at all.
Many operating problems are actually due to out-of-spec material.
When ordering forms, always specify "for mechanical folding and
sealing". There are many things the manufacturer can do to pre-
serve and protect forms.
Store and Handle Forms with Care
Don't "crash" loaded skids on loading docks, in transport vans
or in the final storage area.
Do block loaded skids in transport vans.
Don't expose cartons to the elements; prolonged exposure to
intense sunlight, high humidity and so on can damage material.
Do store materials in a controlled environment. We recommend
a nominal temperature of 75 °F at 50% relative humidity. Glue
formulas do vary, however, so temperature and humidity limits
above and below these may be better for certain materials..
Do store cartons on skids or shelves to prevent absorption of
moisture, never directly on floors or against cement walls. Very
Model 1810 Operator Guide
15SV 40115
dry forms may accumulate static and be difficult to handle, but
damp forms will almost certainly stick together.
Don't stack cartons too high; this can deform the cartons on the
bottom and damage the forms. Try to stack cartons so that
forms stand on edge.
Rotate Stock; Give Material Time to Stabilize
Do rotate stock; use oldest stock first (first in, first out).
Do transfer cartons from the storage area to the work area no
more than several hours before use.
Don't remove boxes from their cartons until they are needed.
Do allow about one hour of stabilization time for each degree of
temperature change from the storage to the processing area.
