Installing the Needle and the Needle Tubing
This chapter describes how to remove the one-piece needle tubing assembly shown in
Figure 1, and how to install the needle assembly shown in Figure 2 and the needle tubing
assembly shown in Figure 3.
To install the new needle assembly and needle tubing assembly, follow these steps:
Step 1: Removing the Surveyor AS Needle Assembly
Step 2: Installing the Surveyor AS Plus Needle Assembly
Step 3: Installing the Surveyor AS Plus Needle Tubing Assembly

Step 1: Removing the Surveyor AS Needle Assembly
The Surveyor AS needle assembly consists of an integrated needle tubing and needle.
YTo remove the one-piece needle (with tubing) assembly
1. Set the XYZ arm of the autosampler to the needle removal position:
For ChromQuest
From the Instrument Window, choose Control > Instrument Status. Click the
Surveyor AS tab. Click Diagnostics, and then click the Direct Control tab to open
the Direct Controls Dialog box. Select the Position Arm to Replace Needle direct
command, and then click Submit.
•For Xcalibur
From the Instrument Setup Window, choose Surveyor AS > Direct Commands to
open the Direct Commands Dialog box. Select the Needle Removal direct command
from the list, and then click Apply.
The XYZ arm moves to the front center of the tray compartment, and then the needle
descends to approximately one inch below its home position. Figure 4 shows the
XYZ arm set to the needle removal position.

2. To detach the needle from the needle mount, pull the needle latch forward, an then slide
the needle upward, out of the needle mount.
3. Detach the needle tubing from the bracket on the XYZ arm.
4. Send the XYZ arm to the back of the tray compartment:
For ChromQuest
From the Instrument window, choose Control > Instrument Status. Click the
Surveyor AS tab. Click Diagnostics, and then click the Direct Control tab to open
the Direct Controls Dialog box. Select the Position Arm To Access Tray direct
command, and then click Submit.
•For Xcalibur
From the Instrument Setup window, choose Surveyor AS > Direct Control to open
the Direct Commands dialog box. Select the Position Arm To Access Tray direct
command, and then click Apply.
5. Pull the needle tubing forward to remove it from the bracket on the left wall of the tray
compartment. Figure 5 shows the location of the bracket.
The PVC retainer is the last item that secures the needle tubing within the
tray compartment.

9. Remount the syringe drive assembly.
Step 2: Installing the Surveyor AS Plus Needle Assembly
YTo install the Surveyor AS Plus needle assembly
1. Set the XYZ arm to the needle removal position as described in “Step 1: Removing the
Surveyor AS Needle Assemblyon page 4.
2. Carefully slide the needle into the needle mount until the needle flag meets resistance,
and then push the latch nut backward (see Figure 8).

IMPORTANT Do not attempt to remove the needle unless the XYZ arm is in the
needle removal position. The needle removal position allows you to slide the needle
upward without bending it.

Step 3: Installing the Surveyor AS Plus Needle Tubing Assembly
YTo install the needle tubing assembly
1. Measure the length of the needle tubing between the end of the internally-threaded fitting
and the black shrink-wrap marker. The length should be approximately 16.5 cm (6.5 in.),
as shown in Figure 3.
2. Connect the internally-threaded fitting of the needle tubing assembly to the 10-32 nut of
the needle assembly.
3. Secure the needle tubing:
a. Thread the tubing through the XYZ arm bracket (under-over-under) as shown in
Figure 9. Allow sufficient play in the tubing (see step 1) so that the XYZ arm can
move freely within the tray compartment. The black shrink-wrap marker must be
cradled in the bracket.
