OPERATION
Starting-up - Temperature Regulation
Turn the thermostat knob clockwise to the required
setting (beyond position «»); the recommended set-
ting is between 2 and 4.
Temperature is regulated automatically and can be
increased by turning the knob to lower numbers, or
decreased by turning it to higher numbers. However
the exact setting should be chosen keeping in mind
that the temperature inside the refrigerator depends
on:
room temperature;
how often the door is opened;
the quantity of food stored in the refrigerator;
location of appliance.
To stop the appliance, simply turn the thermostat
knob to position «».
When the refrigerator is set for the coldest temper-
ature, with a high surrounding room temperature
and a great quantity of foods, it will probably be in
constant use, with consequent frosting on the
back wall of the compartment. If this does in fact
occur, the knob should be set to obtain a slightly
higher temperature. In this way the refrigerator
automatically defrosts, with a considerable energy
saving.
Ambient switch (Fig. 11a)
To ensure a regular operation also at low ambient tem-
peratures this appliance is provided with a switch
located beside the thermostat.
This switch must be switched on when the ambient
temperature is below +16°C (the built-in light will
come on).

Refrigeration of foods and drinks
To achieve the best results with the refrigerator com-
partment, you should follow one or two very simple
rules:
Do not put warm foods or evaporating liquids in the
refrigerator.
Cover or wrap foods (particularly if they have a strong
smell or contain aromatic herbs).
Place the foods so that air can circulate free between
them.
Fig. 13 shows how the foods should be positioned
inside the refrigerator compartment:
Raw meat (all types): it should be stored in plastic
bags and placed in position (c) (Fig. 13), where it can
be stored for one or two days at most.
Fruit and vegetables: they should be washed and
placed in the suitable compartments.
Movable shelves
The inner walls of the refrigerator compartment incor-
porate a number of self-carrying runners which allow
the shelves to be placed at various levels (Fig. 12).
For better use of space, the front half-shelves can lie
over the rear ones.
Fig. 12

31
Freezing fresh food and storage of frozen
food
The 4-star compartment ( ) is suitable for long
term storage of commercially frozen food and for
freezing fresh food.
Freezing fresh food
Under normal circumstances, to freeze fresh foods it
is not necessary to change the setting of the thermo-
stat knob with respect to the normal running position.
However, for a quicker freezing operation, turn the
thermostat knob to the coldest setting, but remember
that, in this condition, the refrigerating compartment
temperature might drop below 0
°
C. If this occurs reset
thermostat knob to a warmer setting.
To help you make the most of the freezing process,
here are some important hints:
Place the food to be frozen on the shelf, as this is the
coldest place.
The maximum quantity of food which can be frozen in
24 hrs is shown on the rating plate which can be
found on the bottom left of the refrigerator.
Only freeze top quality, fresh and thoroughly cleaned,
foodstuffs.
Remember that lean foods keep better and longer
than fatty foods. Salt too reduces storage time.
Prepare the fresh food in small portions to enable it to
be rapidly and completely frozen and to make it possi-
ble subsequently to thaw only the quantity required at
the time.
Wrap up the food in aluminium foil or polythene and
make sure that the packages are airtight.
It is advisable to show on the single food packet the
freezing-in date to enable you to keep tap of the stor-
age time.
Do not allow fresh, unfrozen food to touch food which
is already frozen, thus avoiding a rise in temperature
of the latter.
On the rear of the door you will find a list of foods fol-
lowed by a number. These numbers indicate the maxi-
mum period of time for which the food in question
may be conserved (in months).
Do not put carbonated liquids (fizzy drinks, etc.) in
the freezing compartment as they may burst.
Water ices, if consumed immediately after removal
from the freezing compartment, can possibly cause
the skin to be freeze burnt.
Remember that, once thawed, frozen food deterio-
rates rapidly.
Storage of frozen food
To obtain the best performance from this appliance,
we strongly recommend that you make sure that the
commercially frozen foodstuffs were adequately
stored by the retailer and, furthermore, be sure that
these frozen foodstuffs are transferred from the food-
store to the consumer in the shortest possible time.
It is also advisable not to exceed the storage period
indicated by the producer of the food.
Finally, do not open the door frequently or leave it
open longer than is absolutely necessary.
After an idle period, foods should be stored in the
appliance only after running it for at least two hours,
by setting the thermostat to the coldest position; then,
turn the knob to standard operation.
If there is a power failure when food is in the
freezer, do not open the door of the freezing com-
partment. Foods are not affected if the power cut
is short (6 to 8 hours) and if the freezing compart-
ment is full; otherwise, foods should be used
within a very short time. Once thawed, foods dete-
riorate soon and cannot be frozen again.
Thawing
Deep-frozen or frozen food, prior to being used, can
be thawed in the refrigerator compartment or at room
temperature, depending on the time available for this
operation.
Small pieces may even be cooked still frozen, directly
from the freezer: in this case, cooking will take longer.
Ice-cube production
This appliance is equipped with trays for the produc-
tion of ice-cubes.
Fill these trays with drinking water, then put them in
the freezer compartment.
Do not use metallic instruments to remove the trays
from the freezer.
32
Use of the «Wine Cellar» compartment
(Fig. 13)
Through a simple operation this refrigerator makes it
possible to obtain a «mild» temperature in compart-
ments (d-e), where an ideal «wine cellar» temperature
is reached.
As shown in Fig. 13, lower compartments (d-e) are
separated from the rest by a shelf. This shelf features
a lever (F), which controls the cold air flow through a
number of openings in the shelf itself.
By slipping it to position «5» this section can be used
as a normal refrigerator.
Slide this lever to «0» position to obtain a «wine cellar»
temperature. On positions «1» through «4» intermedi-
ate temperatures are obtained.

Defrosting
Frost is automatically eliminated from the evaporator
of the refrigerator compartment every time the motor
compressor stops, during normal use.
The defrost water drains out through a trough into a
special container at the back of the appliance, over
the motor compressor, where it evaporates.
It is important to periodically clean the defrost
water drain hole in the middle of the refrigerator
compartment channel to prevent the water over-
flowing and dripping onto the food inside.
Use the special cleaner provided, which you will
find already inserted into the drain hole.
Fig. 14
D037
The freezer compartment, however, will become pro-
gressively covered with frost. This should be removed
with the special plastic scraper provided, whenever
the thickness of the frost exceeds 4 mm.
During this operation it is not necessary to switch off
the power supply or to remove the foodstuffs.
Never use sharp metal tools to scrape off frost
from the evaporator as you could damage it.
Do not use a mechanical device or any artificial means
to speed up the thawing process other than those
recommended by the manufacturer.
However, when the ice becomes very thick on the in-
ner liner, complete defrosting should be carried out as
follows:
pull out the plug from the wall socket or turn the ther-
mostat knob to the «O» setting;
remove any stored food, wrap it in several layers of
newspaper and put it in a cool place;
leave the door open, place a basin on the top shelf of
the refrigerator compartment, under the drain hole, lift
the plug as shown in the figure;
Fig. 15
when defrosting is completed, dry the interior thor-
oughly and refit the plug;
keep the scraper for future use;
turn the thermostat knob back to the required setting
or replace the plug in the power socket.
After two or three hours, reload the previously re-
moved food into the compartment.
Important: A temperature rise of the frozen food packs,
during defrosting, may shorten their safe storage life.
