Burnall
Underfloor Draught Fire
Please keep these instructions safe. Should you
move house, please hand them over to the next
occupier.
User’s Operating
Instructions
The Air Control Lever should be
turned to the LEFT for minimum
draught (CLOSED), and to the RIGHT
for maximum draught (OPEN), and
may be set at any intermediate
position to give the required rate of
burning.
In the case of a Burnall Fire with the
inlet at the side, the Air Control Lever
should be parallel with the front of the
hearth for OPEN, and at right angles
for CLOSED.
Do not allow the ash to build up to the
grate-bottom, or this will result in
damage to the fire bars.
Lift-out Ashbox Model:
Remove the grate-bottoms with the
Lifting Key, and then remove the
ashbox (Fig. 1).
Outside Ashbox Model:
Open the room door before opening
the cast iron ashpit door, to avoid un-
controlled draught. Ensure the cast
iron ashpit door is fully closed after
emptying, and that the ashbox is fully
‘home’ beneath the fire (Fig. 2).
Overnight Burner Kit:
Remove overnight burning plate by
inserting key into front of plate and
lifting upwards (Fig. 3).
Always use the tools provided.
Introductions
Your Burnall fire is efficient and
simple to operate; but it is NOT an
ordinary fire, and for optimum
results we suggest that you follow
the instructions below.
Important: PETROLEUM COKE
IS NOT RECOMMENDED!
Recommended fuels are:
House coal trebles or doubles,
Coalite, Homefire Rexco, Sunbrite
doubles, Welsh dry steam coal (large
nuts), logs and peat where available.
1. Close all the doors and windows;
extra draught entering the room will
affect control of the underfloor
draught.
2. Close Air Control Lever to prevent
ash blowing out and rake out excess
ash.
3. Set fire in normal way on top of the
cinders.
In order to obtain a concentrated
draught it is preferable to use small
mixed fuel.
4. Open the air control lever.
5. Close the Boiler Damper where one
is fitted and light.
When using a gas or electric poker,
make sure there is a deep bed of fuel.
NOTE: It is essential with low
reactive smokeless fuels,
e.g. Sunbrite, to maintain a deeper
fuel bed, and the deepening bar
should always be used.
Where a boiler is fitted, the fuel
should cover the opening at the
back of the fire when the boiler
damper is open.

How to light your Burnall

Servicing
It is recommended that the chimney is
swept at regular intervals
If you are burning smokeless fuel we
recommend that the chimney is swept
at least once per annum, or twice per
annum if bituminous coal is used.
After a prolonged shutdown period it
is important to clean boiler flueways,
flue connections and chimney prior to
lighting up.
Warning
Properly installed and operated, this
appliance will not emit fumes.
However if persistent fume emission
does occur then the following
immediate actions should be taken:
1. Open doors and windows to
ventilate room.
2. Let the fire go out or eject and
safely dispose of fuel from appliance.
3. Check for fuel or chimney blockage
and clean if required.
4. Do not attempt to re-light fire until
cause of fumes has been identified, if
necessary seek professional advice.
5. Do not fit extractor fans in the same
room as the appliance and ensure that
an adequate air supply is available for
the fire.
Apertures provided for this purpose
shall not be restricted.
6. Do not light the fire if there is a
possibility that any part of the water
system is frozen.
Where your Burnall Fire is used to
heat a High Output Boiler, follow the
recommendations below in
conjunction with the Burnall Fire
instructions opposite.
1. When the fire is established, open
the back boiler damper.
2. In pump-operated small bore
systems switch on the pump only
when the fire has become established,
i.e. after 15-20 minutes.
If you require domestic hot water
quickly, leave the pump switched off
until the tap water has reached the
required temperature.
3. Controlling the heat to the radiators.
The heat output of the system can be
adjusted as follows:
a) By varying the amount of fuel on
the fire.
A good bed of fuel should be
maintained at all times whilst domestic
hot water and/or radiator heating is
required.
The fuel should always cover the
boiler flueway opening at the back of
the fire.
b) By opening or closing the boiler
damper.
To increase the heat from the fire to
the room, close the boiler damper.
To increase the heat to radiators, open
the boiler damper.
c) By controlling the rate of burning.
Open the Air Control Lever of the fire
for maximum heat output.
Close for minimum.
d) By selective use of radiators.
The radiator valves can be opened or
closed to regulate the individual
radiators.
N.B. The pump should always be
switched off when the fire is out.
Open Fire Central Heating
Where it is desired to keep the fire in
overnight, the following points will
prove helpful.
1. Bank the fire up using slack or
small coke ( it may be necessary to
use an Overnight Burning Plate,
available from Burnall stockists).
2. Experiment to find the correct
setting for the Air Control Lever, but
this should normally be closed, and
when burning coke only slightly
open.
In order to cut out draught completely
on some installations it may be
necessary to leave the room door
open.
3. Where a boiler is fitted, close the
boiler damper.
NOTE. With Open Fire Central
Heating, if you wish to keep the
domestic water hot SWITCH OFF
THE PUMP.
It is essential that the hot water
storage cylinder is adequately
insulated.
Where the fire is used in the presence
of children or the elderly / infirm the
fire should be protected by a fire
guard.
The fire guard should be one
manufactured in accordance with
British standard 6539, fire guards for
use with solid fuel appliances.
Where the fire is left unattended a
spark guard to BS 3248 should be
used.
Do not use aerosol sprays near the
appliance.
