ABOUT THIS MANUAL
This manual describes the ADC RF Worx Automatic Redundant Switch and associated SWatch
switch monitoring software and provides installation, operation, and maintenance instructions.
ADMONISHMENTS
Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to
persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what
may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments — in the form of Dangers,

1 GENERAL
The Automatic Redundant Switch, RDS-AS (Figure 1), a member of the RF Worx family of
products, provides monitoring and redundant backup to Cable TV systems.
The RDS-AS constantly monitors the channel A RF input of ports 1 and 2 and will detect a drop
in signal strength to channel A. When this occurs, the RDS-AS immediately switches to back-
up channel B in order to provide an acceptable signal level to the system. The RDS-AS will
continue to monitor channel A and will switch the signal back when acceptable signal levels
have been restored.
The RDS-AS is designed for use in 19-inch equipment racks. All RF signal connections to the
switch are made through standard 75-Ohm BNC or F-connectors on the rear panel. All
operating controls and indicators are on the front panel.

1.1 Graphical User Interface - “SWatch” Switch Monitoring Software (Optional)
A SWatch GUI software for the RDS-AS can be purchased separately from ADC
Telecommunications. The program provides continuous remote monitoring of the RDS-AS and
associated systems. It is designed for Windows 95 systems with a 90 MHz (or faster) Pentium
Processor.
2 DESCRIPTION
The RDS-AS functions as an electronic A/B switch. This provides redundancy to amplifiers or
receivers used anywhere in the cable TV network. Figure 2 shows a typical Dual A/B switch
configuration.
Note: The system watches to make sure that an acceptable signal has been received for a
full 15 seconds before returning to channel A.

A typical application would protect two optical-to-RF receivers. In this configuration, the RDS-
AS can independently protect one or two pairs of receivers or amplifiers. If there are two pairs,
individual thresholds can be established for each pair, and once the RDS-AS detects a signal
level falling below threshold, it will switch from A to B for that particular pair. All status
conditions for each pair of receivers are available locally and remotely via the SWatch switch
monitoring software.

2.1 Atypical Configuration
Figure 3 details a split system on the A side, with one receiver carrying the lower-frequency
CATV signals and the other receiver carrying the higher CATV signals. On the B side, only one
system is used to carry the combined lower/higher frequency CATV signals. It should be noted
that the RDS-AS will not provide satisfactory results in the above configuration. It is
recommended that systems with this configuration use the ADC Split Linked A/B Switch
(RDS-SLAB) product.

4 INSTALLATION
Use the following procedure to install and cable the redundant switch in a 19-inch network rack,
or equivalent. Dimensions are shown in Figure 6 and Figure 7.

1. At the designated rack location, align the mounting holes in the switch mounting ears with
the threaded holes in the rack, then mount the redundant switch on the rack with four #12-
24 screws. (See Figure 8.)

in the lower left corner of the rear panel (See Figure 9).

3. Refer to your work order, and connect the designated receiver IN/OUT cables to
connectors A and B under the PORT 1 and PORT 2 markings on the rear panel of the
switch. Carefully tie wrap the cables to the cable tie bar at the rear of the switch.
4. This step is optional and performed only if using switch monitoring software. Connect
RS-485 interface cables from the personal computer (PC) with switch monitoring software
to the RS-485 IN and OUT connectors on the rear panel of the switch. This connection can
be via a daisy chain to/from other switch panels. (See Figure 10.)

5. Connect two 22–26 AWG wires to the alarm terminals at the rear panel labeled ALARM
NO (normally open) and C (common). (See Figure 11.) The other ends of the wires can be
connected to the user's alarm panel at the installation location.

6. Using a modular power cord, connect the switch to a convenient source of AC input
voltage, or (if it is to be powered by direct current) connect the DC terminal block
(Figure 11) to –48 V battery power.
7. Check that the front panel (green) NORMAL and (red) FAILURE LEDs are lit, indicating
that the internal power supply is operational. Then proceed to Section 5 to set up and
operate the switch.
4.1 Configuring the RDS-AS for 100 to 120 VAC Operation
The RDS-AS is factory set for –48 VDC or 240 VAC operation, with “230V” showing as the
voltage setting in the power inlet module window (Figure 12). To configure the RDS-AS for
100 to 120 VAC operation, perform the following:
1. Make sure the power cord is removed from the power inlet module before continuing.
2. Pry open the power inlet module door from the right side using a small screwdriver or
equivalent.
3. Remove the fuse module using a small screwdriver or equivalent.
4. Rotate the fuse module 180º so that the text “115V” will show through the power inlet
module window when the door is closed.
Note: If the total cable length exceeds 1,000 feet, termination per requirements of the
RS485 Card Adapter Specification may be required.
Note: The OUT A and OUT B –48 VDC and VAC outlet connectors are not used in this
RDS version. They are left unpowered in all modes of operation.
Warning: The RDS-AS is factory set for –48 VDC or 240 VAC operation. For 100/120 VAC
operation, refer to Section 4.1, Configuring The RDS-AS for 100 to 120 VAC Operation.
Note: The RDS-AS is supplied with a detachable power cord for 120 VAC operation. For
240 VAC operation, consult your local electrical code for the correct type or style of power
cords required.

5. Place the fuse module back into the power inlet module, making sure that the fuse module
is seated properly.
6. Close the power inlet module door, making sure that it snaps firmly into place, and that
“115V” does show through the window.
7. Connect the correct type of power cord corresponding to the local electrical code.
8. The front panel (green) NORMAL and (red) FAILURE LED's will be lit, indicating that
the internal power supply is operational. Then proceed to Section 5 to set up and operate
the switch.

5 SETUP AND OPERATION
5.1 Setup
Power-up (plug in) the RDS-AS. (The front panel status should indicate normal and failure
status.) As a special feature, the system performs internal diagnostics to ensure proper
operation. After power-up a lower case “C” will be displayed for one minute. The “C” will
immediately disappear if communication with the Swatch switch monitoring software is
established. In rare instances an A or B may show continuously in the display when powering
up. This indicates that an internal failure has occurred. Contact ADC (Section 7) for assistance.
Toggle the threshold switch to the “up” position to configure PORT 1. The display will then
lock on to the status indications for this port.
While locked onto PORT 1, calibrate the base level of the receiver using the calibration
procedure described in Section 5.1.1.
Note: After initial power-up, the 7-segment display (Figure 13) will alternately indicate
status for PORT 1 and PORT 2 by flashing either the top or bottom segment for
approximately two seconds, then displaying threshold and status information for the
associated port (1 or 2).
Note: If no changes are made within 15 seconds, the display will revert to its alternating
PORT 1/PORT 2 flashing display.

5.1.1 Calibration
Since normal operation is with the A channel as primary, calibration need only be performed on
the A input channel. Calibration cannot be performed on channel B. Switching the unit to B will
place the unit in a manual mode of operation and disable all switching capability.
RF connectors must be terminated before calibration is performed. The unit should be placed
into the configuration in which it is to be used before attempting calibration.
Use the following steps to calibrate the RDS-AS:
1. Confirm that a nominal signal level to channel A is present.
2. Select PORT (1 or 2) with threshold switch.
3. Flip MODE SELECT switch to CALIBRATION.

5.1.2 Setting The Threshold
After calibration, lock onto the port 1 with the THRESHOLD switch, then set the desired
threshold level with the threshold toggle switch.
The threshold set in this mode of operation will be the level below which the calibrated signal
must drop before switching from the primary to standby receiver/amplifier. For example, if
receiver A is calibrated with a 40 dBmV power level and the threshold is set for 3 dB down, the
RDS-AS will switch to receiver B whenever the “A” signal level falls below 40 – 3 = 37 dBmV.
Repeat the above procedures for Port 2.
5.2 Operation
Threshold adjustment, calibration, and selection of the input channel can be performed on both
ports. Use the threshold switch to select a port for modification, up for port 1, down for port 2.
Note: If an “H” or an “L” appears in the display, the signal level is either too high or too
low. Verify that an acceptable signal level is present before continuing. (See Section 3.)
Note: A “Guard Band” of 0.5 dB is added to all threshold settings to prevent premature
switching; i.e., when setting = 3 dB, 3.5 dB is used as the switching point.
Note: To maintain accuracy after an extreme change in input signal level or operating
temperature, unit may require “Re-calibration” at the new condition.

Normal operation is with the A channel as primary and the B channel as backup. If input
channel B is manually selected from the front panel the output will be unmonitored by the
system and a LED on the front panel labeled “MANUAL” will indicate this status.
5.2.1 Failure Detection
When failure of the primary input channel A is detected, the system closes the dry contacts on
alarm relay, lights the red FAILURE LED on the front panel, and communicates failure to the
SWATCH software (if available).
5.2.2 Threshold
To prevent the system from chattering, the switching threshold (to backup/return from backup)
should be set to different levels. The difference should be half of the threshold setting to a
maximum of 2 dB.
Changing the threshold will cause switching if appropriate to the current signal level.
5.2.3 Switchback
Once the return of an acceptable signal to primary input channel A is detected, the system
monitors that signal for a full 15 seconds before switching back to channel A. During this time
the red FAILURE LED on the front panel will blink to indicate that the switchback is pending.
5.2.4 Clearing Signal Failure
To clear a failure on the RDS-AS and open the alarm relay contacts on an unused port, perform
the following procedure.
1. If the channel (port) in question was previously calibrated, follow the reset procedure
below. If not, proceed to step 2.
2. Toggle to channel B to clear the failure status-the FAILURE LED should extinguish.
5.2.5 System Reset Procedure
Use the following procedure to clear all threshold settings and all calibration info. This
procedure should be used when re-deploying the RDS-AS to a different location or application.
1. Power down (unplug) the RDS-AS and remove all power sources.
Note: This system only monitors the signals of the A input channels for both ports 1 and 2.
The B input channels are not monitored and there is no auto-switching capability. A faulty
signal to input channel B will not be detected.
Note: It is normal for the CALIBRATION LED to be flashing.

2. Hold the threshold switch down while re-powering. Wait for a “C” or a threshold number
to appear in the status window.
3. Follow the setup procedures described in Section 5.
6 MAINTENANCE
Maintenance requirements of the redundant amplifier switch are minimal, consisting merely of
periodic cleaning.
6.1 Preventive Maintenance
The outside of the redundant amplifier switch should be cleaned during routine headend
equipment maintenance.
6.2 Fuse Replacement
Caution: For continued safe operation and to reduce the risk of fire, replace fuses with the same
type and rating
