Set up your T-Mobile G1 for the first time
Set up your T-Mobile G1 involves just a few simple steps. After you turned on the phone for the first time, you will be prompted
to set up a Google Mail account. Touch the T-Mobile G1 to begin.
B. Install the SIM card
Getting started
This handy guide will get you up and running with your
T-Mobile G1 with Google.
For a complete guide to your phone, check the User Manual in
the User Manual disc.

Hold the phone sideways with the
control buttons on the right, then
slide the screen panel up to reveal
the keyboard and the back cover
release tab.

Push down the back cover release
tab until it disengages from the
phone.
Locate the SIM card slot then
insert the SIM card with its
gold contacts facing down
and its cut-off corner facing
out the card slot.
Check that you’ve received
everything

Slide the SIM card completely
into the slot.
C. Install the battery
Align the battery’s exposed
copper contacts with the
battery connectors inside the
battery compartment.
Insert the contact’s side of the
battery first and then gently
push the battery into place.
Replace the back cover.
Flip open the PC connector cover
at the bottom panel of your phone.
While holding the phone sideways,
slide up the keyboard, then locate
the memory card slot at the side of
the control buttons.
Pull open the memory card slot cover.

Insert the memory card into the slot
with its golden contacts facing down.
Replace the slot cover. Make sure
that both ends of the cover are
properly seated on the slot.
E. Charge the battery
Press the END CALL/POWER button
to turn on the phone.
Note When the phone is on, press and
hold the END CALL/POWER
button, then tap Power off on the
options menu to turn the phone off.
F. Turn the T-Mobile G1 on
Insert the USB connector of the AC
adapter to the PC connector.
Plug in the AC adapter to an electrical outlet to start charging
the battery. The battery is fully charged after about 3 hours of
charging.

What you will see on your Home screens
The Home screen, which is actually three screens in one, is your starting point for using the applications on your phone.
You can customise the Home screens to display application icons, shortcuts, and widgets that suit you.
Read the “Setting up your
T-Mobile G1” information,
then tap Next.
If you have an existing
Google Mail account, tap
Sign in, enter your existing
account details, then tap
Sign in.
Your Google Mail contacts,
calendar events, and emails
are downloaded to your
phone. Tap Finish setup to
display the Home screen.

Tap to open the Applications
tab and select an application.

web'n'walk site in
Browser.
In addition to the Home screen, slide your finger left
or right on the Home screen to display the extended
Home screens.
Note You can add application shortcuts, widgets, and
folders to any of the Home screens. Refer to the User
Manual for details.
Enter text and more with the keyboard
When you start an application or select a field that requires
text or numbers, you can use the QWERTY keyboard to
enter information. The QWERTY keyboard is similar to a
computer keyboard with some special keys. To open the
keyboard, hold the device sideways with the control buttons
on the right, then slide the screen panel up.
Note The screen automatically changes to landscape
orientation when you open the keyboard (except in
Browser and Pictures, where you can fix the screen
orientation regardless of whether the keyboard is open).
Your battery won’t be charged
when it comes out of the box.
Select, scroll, and navigate on your screen
Use the following selection, scroll, and zoom techniques to select
items and navigate through your screens, applications, and menus.
Touch or tap
When selecting items on
the screen, simply touch
or them with your finger.
Zooming
While browsing web pages,
and viewing pictures and
maps, tap the screen to
open the zoom control tab.
Use the TRACKBALL
Roll the TRACKBALL to navigate
selectable items on the screen.
Press the TRACKBALL to select
a highlighted item or action.
Swipe or scroll
Drag or slide your finger
vertically or horizontally
across the screen to scroll
up or down in a list or page.

Special keys
Search ( )
Press the Search key to open the Search bar. In the
search bar, enter the information you want to search,
then press again, or tap Search.
Menu ( )
Instead of pressing the MENU button, you can press the
Menu key, located at the left of the Z key, to open the
menu for each screen.
Keyboard shortcuts
You can set keyboard shortcuts that open individual
applications when used together with the Search key.
To assign a shortcut key:
1. Press HOME, then press MENU.
2. Tap Settings, scroll down the screen, then tap
Applications > Quick launch. See the user manual
for details.

Tap Create, then open the
keyboard to set up your new
Google Mail account. Follow
screen prompts to proceed.
* You need a 3G/GPRS connection to
send and receive Picture Messages.
When done, tap Send or press to send the
message. The send progress is displayed at the
right side of the message in the message list.
Open the keyboard, then enter the mobile
phone number or email address (for Picture
Messages) of the message recipient in the To
field. As you enter the phone number or email
address, matching contacts will appear on the
screen. Tap a recipient or continue entering
your recipient’s number or email address.
Press HOME, tap the Applications tab, then
tap Messaging > New message.
Send a Text Message or Picture Message
Send out short text messages or a Picture Message* to another mobile phone.
Surf the web with web'n'walk
Use web'n'walk as your jump-off point when surfing the web.
You can also go to http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/mobile-internet/ to learn more about all T-Mobile services.
Transfer pictures, music, and applications to your T-Mobile G1
After you installed a memory card, connect your T-Mobile G1 to your computer and start transferring pictures, music, and
applications. Note that the Camera application saves all captured pictures in the memory card, and Music only plays
audio files from the memory card.
Get your emails using Google Mail
Google Mail is activated instantly when you set up the phone for the first time. Google Mail groups each message you send
with all the responses you receive. This conversation list continues to grow as new replies arrive, so you can always see
your messages in context. To synchronise your Google Mail emails, contacts and calendar, refer to the User Manual.

Tap a button to archive,
label, or delete the
conversation.
Press HOME, tap the
Applications tab, then
tap Google Mail.
The conversations list
appears. To refresh
your Inbox, press
MENU, then tap
Refresh.
Tap on a conversation
to display all messages
in that conversation.
Email message options.
Tap a button to reply the
sender, reply to all senders,
or forward the email.
On the Home screen, tap web'n'walk.
Go to a different web page by entering the web page
address in the URL field and tapping Go.
You are automatically taken to the T-Mobile Favourites
Home page. Scroll your finger up or down the screen
to view other areas of the web page.
Take a picture and send it via email
All pictures you take using your phone are automatically saved to the memory card unless you choose to delete it ( )
in the post-capture screen. Refer to the User Manual to learn more about the Camera.
While on any application screen, press the
CAPTURE button located at the right panel of
your phone to activate the Camera.
Tap Share on the post-capture screen.
If you have set up another email account on your
phone aside from your Google Mail, select the
email account to use to send the picture.
Personalise your T-Mobile G1
A. Change your wallpaper
On the Home screen, press MENU, then tap
Wallpaper > Wallpaper gallery. You can also
use your own pictures as wallpaper.
B. Set the date, time zone, and time
On the Home screen, press MENU, then tap
Settings > Date & time. Clear the Automatic
checkbox.
C. Change your ring tone
On the Home screen, press MENU, then tap
Settings > Sound and display > Phone ringtone.
D. Adjust the ringer or media volume
Press the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons at the left
panel of your phone to adjust the ringer volume.
When playing music or watching a video, press
the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons to adjust the
media volume.
Make that first call
While on any application screen, press the
CALL ( ) button, then tap the Dialer tab.

To save contacts on your SIM card to your T-Mobile G1, press HOME, then tap Contacts. You can also tap the
Contacts tab when in the Dialer to display your contacts list.
Press MENU, then tap Settings > SIM contacts importer. Select the contact you want to save to your contacts
list, press MENU, then tap Import. To import all your contacts, press MENU, then tap Import all.
Touch the keys on the Dialer to enter the
phone number. If you touched a wrong
number key, touch to erase each
subsequent digit of a number. To erase the
entire number, tap and hold .
Tip During a call, press the VOLUME UP/
DOWN buttons on the left panel of the
T-Mobile G1 to adjust the in-call volume.
When done, press the END CALL/POWER
( ) button to hang up.button to hang up.
Roll the TRACKBALL down to select the text
box, then start composing your message.
If sending a Picture Message, press , then
tap Add subject or Attach to add a message
subject, or attach a picture, an audio file, a voice
recording, or a picture slideshow.
Frame your subject on the screen, then press
the CAPTURE button halfway to activate auto-
focus. When focus is set, press the CAPTURE
button fully to take the shot.

Your picture is automatically attached to your email
message. Compose your email, then tap Send.
You can also tap the Applications tab on the
Home screen, then tap to open web'n'walk.
Getting around with Maps
Use Maps on your phone to view your current location, search for a place of interest, seek directions, know the current
traffic information (depending on availability), and more. To open Maps, press HOME, then tap Maps.
Tap a message header to open the message body.
Your phone also enables you to fetch up to five POP3/IMAP
email accounts from famous Internet email providers such
as Yahoo! Mail, AOL, and more. Consult your User Manual to
learn how to add external email accounts on your phone.
Scroll down the message to display the message
or conversation option buttons.
To know your location,
press MENU, then
tap My location. Your
location on the map is
indicated by a blue dot.
To search for a place of interest,
press MENU, then tap Search.
Enter the place you want to
search, then tap Search.
To seek directions, press
MENU, then tap Directions.
Enter your starting point and
destination, then tap Route.
When the Search results list
appears, tap a place to display
it on the map.
When the Directions screen
appears, tap Show map to
show the directions on a map.
Set the phone’s memory
card as a USB drive.
Press HOME > MENU,
tap Settings > SD card
& phone storage, then
select the Use for USB
storage option.
On your computer,
navigate to the USB
drive and open it.
Tip You can create folders in the memory card to
organise your pictures into albums, or your music
into playlists.
Connect your phone to
your computer using
the USB cable.
When finished, close the USB drive window,
unmount or eject the drive as required by your
computer’s operating system, then disconnect
the USB cable.
Create a top-level folder on the memory card,
and name the folder “Pictures”, “Music”, or
“Applications”, then open it.
Transfer your files into the appropriate folder.
On your phone, press HOME > MENU, tap
Settings > SD card & phone storage, then clear
the Use for USB storage option.
