Scanning Codes
Point the scanning window at a target code and hold it 50 to 150 mm (2.0 to 6.0
inches) away from the code. Keep the QS20H stationary in a position where the
code lies within the scanning area between the right and left pointers and where
the center pointer is on the centerline parallel to the right or left edge of the code,
and then press the trigger switch.
When the QS20H has read the code successfully, the reading confirmation LED
will illuminate in green and the beeper sounds.
The triple pointers demarcate the
left-to-right scanning range. Those
pointers almost come onto the centerline parallel to the upper or lower
edge of the code when the scanning distance is 70 to 80 mm. If the
scanning distance is more than or less than that range, however, those
pointers will deviate from the actual centerline parallel to the upper or
lower edge of the code.
The illumination LED will turn on when the ambient environment is dark or
the target code cannot be read easily.
If the QS20H fails to read due to specular effects or other factors, change
the scanning angle of the scanning window or the distance from codes,
and try it again. (Specular effects occur when the reflection of the light
from the label surface becomes excessively strong. This can easily happen
when the reflecting surface is polished or covered with vinyl.)
Allow only a single code to come within the scanning range. If two or more
codes lie within the scanning range at the same time, the QS20H may fail
to read or continue reading those codes alternately.

3
The QS20H cannot support touch scanning. If you bring the scanning
window into contact with a target code, the QS20H cannot read it.
The QS20H can read 2D codes omnidirectionally. Note that the target code
including the margin should lie within the scanning range.
The time required to read a 2D code is proportional to the volume of data
contained in the code. If you scan a 2D code containing a large volume of
data with the QS20H, it may take time.
Disabling reading of unnecessary types of codes may increase the scan-
ning speed.
Low-quality bar codes (blurred or printed too lightly) may not be read by
the QS20H even if they are the type that barcode-dedicated scanners can
read.
Before reading labels, clean them if stained.
Avoid using the QS20H in direct sunlight. The QS20H might fail to read
correctly.
Depending upon the cell pitch or code size, the proper scanning distance
from labels will differ.

Features
Trigger switch control
If you press the trigger switch, the QS20H will become ready to scan. Bringing
the scanning window to a 2D code or bar code will cause QS20H to read the code
and send it to the connected PC or external equipment automatically. The
trigger switch is available in four modes—Auto-off mode, Momentary switching
mode, Alternate switching mode, and Continuous reading mode. You may
switch between those modes from the QR-coded parameter menu given in
Chapter 4.
(1) Auto-off mode
Holding down the trigger switch lights the illumination LED for a maximum of 5
seconds during which the QS20H is ready to scan. If you release the trigger
switch or when the QS20H completes code reading, the illumination LED goes
off.
(2) Momentary switching mode
Only while you hold down the trigger switch, the illumination LED lights and the
QS20H can read a code.
(3) Alternate switching mode
Pressing the trigger switch turns on the illumination LED. Even if the switch is
released, the illumination LED remains on until a code is read successfully or you
press the trigger switch again. Pressing the trigger switch toggles the illumina-
tion LED on and off.
(4) Continuous reading mode
Powering on the QS20H turns on the illumination LED and keeps it on, irrespec-
tive of the trigger switch.
Re-read prevention
The QS20H supports the re-read prevention so that it will not read same codes in
succession. If the QS20H fails to read, therefore, you need to release the trigger
switch or pull the scanning window away from the target code for at least one
second for canceling the re-read prevention and then try scanning again.
For low-quality labels which cannot be read for more than one second, the
QS20H might read same codes in succession at intervals of more than one
second.
5
Reading black-and-white inverted QR codes
The QS20H can read white QR codes on black background. You may switch
between "Black code on white background" and "White code on black back-
ground" by using the QR-coded parameter menu given in Chapter 4.
Reading split QR codes (registered as "Structured Append" at AIM)
A QR code can be split into a maximum of 16 blocks. The QS20H can read split
QR codes. Two reading modes of split QR codes are available—Edit mode and
Non-edit mode. In the Edit mode, the QS20H edits scanned split codes and
transfers the restored data to the PC; in the Non-edit mode, each time the QS20H
reads a single split code, it transfers the data to the PC. You may switch between
those modes by using the QR-coded parameter menu given in Chapter 4.
Up to 8 kilobytes of data transferable in Edit mode
In Edit mode, QS20H can read split codes of up to 8-kilobyte data, store and edit
them, and then transfer the restored data to the PC. If a restored code contains
data exceeding 8 kilobytes, a reading error will occur.
Supporting bar codes, QR codes, and other types of two-dimensional codes
The QS20H can read the following codes:
Bar codes: EAN, UPC-A/E, CODE39, CODE128, NW-7, and
ITF
QR codes: Model 1, Model 2, and MicroQR
Two-dimensional codes: PDF417, MaxiCode and Data Matrix

Chapter 2. Connecting the QS20H to the PC
Connection precautions
Use a sufficient length of wiring for the interface cable or AC adapter cable.
Do not let the interface cable or AC adapter cable run along the floor.
Do not walk on or hook cables, as this could scratch them.
When connecting or disconnecting the interface cable or DC power jack,
hold the connector housing and carefully plug or unplug it.
Do not apply power exceeding 10 VDC to the DC power jack.
Precautions in installation
Do not set up the QS20H in any of the following environments:
- in places exposed to direct sunlight
- near any heating equipment
- in extremely hot and humid areas
- in extremely cold areas such as in refrigerators
Under the above environmental conditions, the code scanner circuitry or
optical components might not operate normally.
Do not set up the QS20H anyplace where it may be exposed to water.
Water will get into the QS20H, damaging the scanner.
Do not set up the QS20H in the vicinity of machinery that could generate
high frequencies.
High frequencies may cause the QS20H to malfunction.
Do not set up the QS20H in places where it may be subjected to excessive
dust or conductive dust (e.g., carbons or metallic powders).
Electrical insulation failures may occur, resulting in a broken scanner.
Take care not to drop the QS20H during installation work.
Dropping or bumping the QS20H against a solid object may result in a
broken housing or internal failure.
Do not set up the QS20H in places where it may be subject to vibration,
e.g., on machinery or belt conveyers.
Vibration may cause the QS20H to break.
