BS-3000 Remote Communication Station (SMS Version)
User’s Manual
The BS-3000 Remote Communication Station is able to collect and remotely upload data
from guard tour readers via mobile phone networks. The computer receiving the data
must be equipped with a mobile phone network – compatible modem.
Two mobile phone SIM cards capable of sending SMS messages over the GSM network
will be needed. One to install in the BS-3000 for it to upload guard tour data, the other to
install in the mobile phone network modem connected to the computer so it can receive
the guard tour data.
Description of the BS-3000 hardware:
¾ Status LED Lights
(in the descriptions below, “up” indicates the direction on the BS-3000 where the
status LED lights are located):
Red LED – Upper-Left
Flashing: communicating over the mobile phone network.
Constant on: the BS-3000 has data that needs to be uploaded.
Constant off: the BS-3000 does not have data that needs to be uploaded.
Green LED – Lower-Left
Flashing once per second: the BS-3000 is operating normally.
Red LED – Upper-Right
Flashing: the mobile phone network communication module is working
correctly.
Constant on: the mobile phone network communication module is not
working correctly.
Blue LED – Lower-Right
Flashing once per second: the BS-3000 is operating normally.
Flashing quickly: the BS-3000 is communicating with a guard tour reader.
¾ Audio Signals
(There are two types of audio signals: long beep and short beep)
Short Beep (once)
Guard tour reader found, but the reader does not contain data that needs to
be uploaded.
This can also indicate that one SMS message has just been sent out.
Short Beep (twice consecutively)
The mobile phone network communication module has been initialized.
Short Beep (three times consecutively)
The BS-3000’s memory is full, please upload to the remote computer.
Long Beep (once)
Data transfer from the reader to the BS-3000 has been completed.
Short Beep (twice) + Long Beep (once)
Data transfer from the BS-3000 to the remote location via the mobile phone
network has been completed.
Long Beep (once) + Short Beep (three times)
The BS-3000 not operable and needs to be initialized by the manufacturer.
¾ Power Supply
The BS-3000 is able to use multiple types of power supplies:
USB connection to the computer.
9V AC adapter.
Rechargeable battery.
Car adapter.
The BS-3000 will turn on automatically after being connected to a power source.
The status LED lights will start flashing at a normal pace if the unit is operating
correctly.
The rechargeable battery in the BS-3000 automatically recharges whenever an
external power source is connected, including the 9V AC adapter, car adapter,
and the USB connection.
BS-3000 Operating Instructions
1. Install your mobile phone network modem
This should be done in accordance to instructions provided by the hardware
manufacturer. This modem must be of the type that communicates with the
computer via a serial port or via a USB-to-Serial connection.
2. Setting up the software:
The primary guard tour system software must first be installed.
Install the software provided with the BS-3000 only after the primary guard tour
system software has been started at least once.
The software that is provided with the BS-3000 is named “MessageCenter”.
After starting, it normally displays as a tray icon on the lower-right corner of the
screen. Depending on the software’s status, the icon it displays may include:
The software is searching for installed mobile phone network modems.
While this is being displayed, the software does not respond to commands.
The software us unable to find any compatible mobile phone network
modems. The user may right-click on the icon to quit the program.
The software has found a compatible mobile phone network modem, and is
waiting to receive messages.
The software is retrieving messages from the mobile phone network
modem. Message retrieval occurs every 8 seconds.
Please note that if the modem is unplugged from the computer while
MessageCenter is running, MessageCenter must be restarted in order for it to
properly locate the modem again.
3. Setting up the dial-up number:
The number carried by the SIM card installed inside the mobile phone network
modem that is connected to the computer must be stored into the BS-3000, so
that it will know where to send the guard tour data it has collected.
There are two ways to store the number into the BS-3000:
Local Setup
(this must be performed on a BS-3000 before Remote Setup can be used)
z Connect the BS-3000 to the PC using the USB cable provided.
z Start MessageCenter and wait for it to find the modem.
z Right-click on the MessageCenter tray icon, and click on
“Setup Dial-Up Number”.
z Check on “Local Setup” on the window that appears.
z Enter the number carried by the SIM card installed in the modem,
starting with a plus mark (+) and the country code (e.g. 1 for the
United States, 86 for China, etc.), then the phone number on the
SIM card. Press Confirm when done.

z Click on the confirmation message.
z After a few seconds, MessageCenter will return with a message
indicating whether the number has been stored properly.
Remote Setup
(this can be done after MessageCenter has received at least one SMS
message from the BS-3000. When this is done, the number carried by the
SIM card inside the BS-3000 will be stored by MessageCenter and becomes
selectable)
z Make sure the BS-3000 is turned on.
z Start MessageCenter and wait for it to find the modem.
z Right-click on the MessageCenter tray icon, and click on
“Setup Dial-Up Number”.
z Select the number carried by the BS-3000 unit that you wish to setup
from the pull-down menu.
z Enter the new dial-up number that you wish to store in the BS-3000.
z Click on Confirm. The setup information will be sent to the BS-3000 as
a SMS message.
4. Collecting data from guard tour readers:
The BS-3000 is able to collect data from guard tour readers wirelessly.
Compatible readers include models BP-2002S, BP-2002-W, and BP-2002B-W.
Turn on the BS-3000.
Set the reader into the indentation on the BS-3000. For reader model BP-
2002S, please place its reading head between the status lights, and set its top
flush against the inside edge of the BS-3000.
If there is data that needs to be transferred from the reader to the BS-3000,
the blue LED light on the BS-3000 will start flashing rapidly, indicating that
data is being transferred. When the transfer process is complete, the BS-
3000 will make one long beep, then one short beep periodically every few
seconds, indicating that the reader connected no longer has any data to
upload, and should be removed. If you have another reader that needs to
have its data transferred, please place it in the BS-3000 it at this time.
If the BS-3000 makes three short beeps, it means that its memory is full, and
will need to upload to the computer before being able to collect any more
data from readers.
5. Remote data upload
When the BS-3000 contains data that needs to be uploaded, if in 30 seconds it
does not communicate with a reader or with the remote computer, it will
automatically start to upload over the mobile phone network.
If for any reason it fails to upload data upon the first try (for example, if the
remote PC has not been prepared properly, or if the SIM card does not have
sufficient funds, etc.), the BS-3000 will try again once per minute for three
minutes. If it fails after three minutes, it will stop trying to upload, and will only
attempt again when new data is collected or when it is restarted.
The primary guard tour software must be closed while the computer is waiting
for data uploads using the BS-3000.
When data is received by the computer, it will be indicated by a flashing blue
box that appears on the center of the screen with the number of records received
indicated. The number of new records received will be added to the existing
number. Clicking on the box will cause it to disappear and the record count go
back to zero.
Data received on the computer will be automatically forwarded to the primary
guard tour software’s database. It will be necessary to perform Data
Reprocessing on the patrol software to view patrol reports based on this new
data.
Troubleshooting
¾ During Local Setup, the MessageCenter indicates that the number has not been
stored properly.
Shut down and restart MessageCenter and try again. The BS-3000 may have
been going through the initialization process while MessageCenter tried to store
the number.
