Definition of Terms

Medical Electrical Equipment

Electrical equipment intended to diagnose, treat the patient under medical supervision.

Electrical equipment that transfers light energy to the patient.

Protective earth ground

The conductor used to connect the non-current-carrying metal parts of equipment, raceways,

and other enclosures to the system grounded conductor, the grounding electrode conductor, or

both, of the circuit at the service equipment or at the source of a separately derived system.

Neutral Conductor (common)

In an AC circuit, the return line for current.

Means of Isolation

The Means of Isolation disconnects (Isolates) the Battery Back-Up unit from the source of

power. This isolation makes it safe to work on the Battery Back-Up or the light. For the Floor

mounted Battery Back-Up, the Means of Isolation is the cord. Unplugging the cord isolates the

unit from power. For the Ceiling/Wall mounted Battery Back-Up, the Means of Isolation is the

mains breaker. This circuit breaker isolates the unit from power.

Disposal of Waste

This product must not be disposed of with your other waste. Instead, it is your responsibility to

dispose of your waste equipment by handing it over to a designated collection point for the

recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment, or by returning it to Medical Illumination

International, Inc for reprocessing. The separate collection and recycling of your waste

equipment at the time of disposal will help to conserve natural resources and ensure that it is

recycled in a manner that protects human health and the environment. For more information

about where you can drop off your waste equipment for recycling, please contact your local

city office, your waste disposal service, or your product distributor or retailer.

Safety Instructions

 Installation/Assembly shall be by qualified personnel only.

 Installation of the ceiling/wall unit shall be by a licensed electrician.

 Maintenance (section 5) shall be by a qualified person.

 Follow all warnings and notices in Section 3.

 The power source for a ceiling/wall mounted unit shall be on a circuit breaker connected

to all energized supply conductors.

 The fuses protect the circuitry and safeguards against fire. Ensure that all fuses are

replaced with the specified rating.

 Input and output terminals will be labeled to show which wires should be installed where

along with proper warnings.

Limited Warranty

This document comprises the general terms of your product’s Limited Warranty. By accepting

the shipment of the product, the owner/purchaser agrees to adhere to the warranty terms and

conditions expressed herein.

Medical Illumination International, Inc. (“Medical Illumination”) Lighting Equipment is warranted

against defective material and/or workmanship, excluding normal replacement parts (e.g.

fuses, relays or Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) Battery), for a period of three (3) years from the date

of shipment. This Limited Warranty applies exclusively to the repair or replacement of parts

recognized as defective by Medical Illumination that are in normal use and have not been

modified or repaired by unauthorized personnel.

This Limited Warranty extends only to the first retail purchaser of a product, and is not

transferable or assignable. This warranty supersedes all other guarantees or warranties,

expressed or implied.

WARRANTY SERVICE & REPAIRS

Medical Illumination does not provide (or give any compensation for) outside repair services or

field labor. Therefore, in the event of a failure covered under this warranty, please take the

following immediate action:

1. Contact Medical Illumination via phone at (818) 838-3025, through our website at

http://www.medillum.com, or by facsimile at (818) 838-3725.

A. Be prepared to give the model number, serial number, and full description of the

failure.

B. Our Customer Service department will attempt to solve the problem over the phone.

If it becomes necessary to send the product to the factory for repair, you will be

provided with a Return Authorization number. Products sent to the factory without a

Return Authorization number will not be accepted.

2. It is the retail purchaser’s obligation to arrange for shipment return of a product to the factory

for warranty service, which shall be at the retail purchaser’s expense. Carefully package the

light component (light head, arm assembly, mount assembly, etc.) and return it, freight prepaid

and insured, with the Return Authorization number clearly marked on the outside of the box, to:

Damage resulting from inadequate packing is not covered by this warranty, and shipping

insurance does not cover damage due to inadequate packing. We recommend that the

package be insured against loss or in-transit damage. Medical Illumination cannot be held

responsible for in-transit loss or damage. In the event that freight-related damage should

occur, Medical Illumination will notify you immediately so that you can file a damage claim with

the proper freight carrier.

Limited Warranty (cont’d)

Within the aforementioned time period of three (3) years from date of shipment, Medical

Illumination will evaluate the returned product, repair as appropriate, and ship the product back

to you with freight costs prepaid by the Company. In the event that non-warranty damage or

failure is discovered, you will be contacted before any repairs are performed.

EXCLUSIONS

This Limited Warranty does not cover the following:

• Any field labor or outside services (electricians, contractors, installation services, routine

maintenance or other repair services)

• Damage to the product resulting from tampering, accident, abuse, negligence,

alteration, or other causes unrelated to problems with material and/or workmanship

• Damage due to improper installation, use, cleaning or maintenance, as outlined in the

Installation and Service Manual for the product

• Labor costs associated with removing, re-packaging for shipment or reinstalling product

Please contact the authorized dealer from whom the product was purchased to inquire about a

product return. Additional terms and conditions set by the dealer may apply for any returned

items.

SHIPMENT DAMAGE:

If the initial shipment of your purchased product arrived in damaged condition, please leave the

Section 3: Assembly and Installation Instructions

General Information

The Battery Back-Up is offered in two configurations. A Ceiling/Wall Mounted version is for

use with ceiling and wall mounted lights and the Floor Stand version is available for the MI-

750 and the MI-1000 lights only. The Ceiling/Wall Mounted Battery Back Up can be used with

the MI-750, MI-1000 and System Two LED ceiling mounted lights

WARNING: To avoid the risk of electric shock, this equipment must only be

connected to supply mains that include protective earth connection.

WARNING: Avoid spilling liquids on the Battery Back-Up box or next to the

base. Risk of electric shock, short circuit and corrosion exists if liquid is spilled.

Assembly Instructions for MI-750/MI-1000

Floor Stand Models

1. Bolt the assembled legs onto the base assembly enclosure using the four bolts and lock

washers from the hardware kit. Position the base enclosure so that the set screw in the

base is at the rear of the assembly.

2. Insert the upright pole fully into the base assembly so that the anti-rotation slot at the

bottom of the pole sits over the pin in the base assembly hole. Rotate the pole until the

pin slides fully into the slot, and the pole fully lowers and firmly seats into the base. The

power cord connection on the pole should be in line with the set screw as shown. Once

the pole is properly positioned, securely tighten the set screw using the 1/8” hex wrench

provided.

3. Plug cord from upright into Battery Box outlet

4. Do not install the Arm Assembly with the Light Head attached. Installation

with the Light Head attached can cause damage to the Light. Refer to the product

manual for attaching the Upright to the Arm and the Arm to the Light Head/Yoke

assembly.

5. SPECIAL NOTE: Installation of this equipment should be performed by qualified

persons only. Medical Illumination International, Inc. does not warranty any

damage occurring as a result of improper installation. It is recommended that this

installation manual be completely reviewed prior to installation.

Assembly Instructions for Ceiling/Wall Mount

Battery Back Up Models

The Ceiling/Wall Mounted Battery Backup is a permanently mounted alternative power

source for the MI-750, MI-1000 and System Two light systems. The Ceiling/Wall Mounted

Battery Backup should be mounted under the direction of a licensed structural engineer

factoring the construction of the wall and the weight of the box. The mounting locations

should be chosen to provide;

 Easy access to the unit fuses

 Adequate clear space per local electrical codes

 Clear visual access to the indicator lights

 A distance between the Battery Backup unit and the light that is less than the supplied

cable

 Ample room around the box for ventilation

 Wall stud or other secure mounting technique that accommodates a secure mounting

of the box to the wall

The Ceiling/Wall Mounted Battery Back Up should be mounted based on the direction of a

licensed structural engineer factoring the construction of the wall and the weight of the box.

The electrical connection shall be connected to a circuit breaker that will disconnect all

energized conductors simultaneously.

Refer to the Light Installation Manual for the procedure for installing the Arm and Light

Head/Yoke assembly.

Warning! Use caution when removing the front cover. Disconnect the detachable LED

interface cable.

Ceiling/Wall Mount Battery Backup

for MI-750/MI-1000

If the wall mount model is being installed in a location with an existing ceiling mount light

head, the existing power supply must be removed using the steps below. Otherwise, skip to

Step 4

Step 1

 To prevent a shock hazard,

turn off the mains input to the

arm.

 Disconnect and remove the

light head from the arm

 Remove the arm and locate

the power supply in the power

supply enclosure on the arm

 Remove the Power Supply

enclosure cover, then remove

the entire plate including the

power supply by:

 Cutting the Molex

connector

 Cut the red and black

DC wires that run

through the arm

 Remove the four

mounting screws

Note: Cut the red and black DC

wires in a way that preserves as

much length in the wire as

possible.

is now located on the Battery Backup Unit.

Ceiling/Wall Mount Battery Backup for

System Two Light System

To use the Battery Back Up with an existing ceiling mounted Light Head, the existing

power supply must be bypassed using the steps below.

*Note: The Battery Back Up can only supply power to one Light Head

Section 4: Operation Basic Operation

The Battery Back-Up is designed to supply power in the event of a mains power failure. The

unit will switch from the AC Power to battery power automatically.

Connecting the Battery

Before using the Battery Back-Up you must first connect the 24VDC Battery to the system.

To do this, remove the cover panel and then remove the RED insulating cover from the

battery connector. Once the insulator is removed, connect the battery to the system by

connecting the two gray connectors. Once this is done, connect the unit to mains and

replace the cover. The AC Power and Battery Charging LED’s will light.

The four LED indicators on the battery box:

 The Green “AC POWER” indicator will light when the AC power supply is powered.

 The Blue “CHARGING BATTERY” LED will light whenever the battery charger is

delivering charge to the battery.

 The Amber “BATTERY IN USE” LED will light whenever the AC power is unavailable

and the battery is available to power the light head.

 The Yellow “LOW BATTERY” LED will light when the Battery falls below 22V. At this

point an alternative light should be used.

Positioning the Unit

Caution must be taken when maneuvering the Floor Stand Battery

Back-Up over uneven floor thresholds. The unit tilt must not exceed 10°

without external stabilization. This requirement is reinforced with the

warning label to the right.

The following sequence is recommended for crossing uneven floor thresholds:

1. Place a foot on the lower half of the

Battery Box. Keep heel on the floor to create

stability during this action.

2. While firmly grasping the upright pole,

gently pull back to tip the entire unit. Use the

foot on the ground to prevent backwards

motion of the entire unit.

3. While maintaining manageability of the

unit, gently roll the unit over the threshold.

4. Once the threshold has been cleared,

gently return the front caster wheels to their

resting position on the ground.

5. To guide the rear caster wheel over

the threshold, simple roll the unit towards the

threshold until the rear caster wheels are

near the edge of the threshold. Once in

place, firmly grasp the upright pole and lift up

to tip the unit forward.

6. Push forward to roll the unit forward to fully clear the threshold.

7. Once fully cleared, return the unit to its resting position and continue to location for

use.

Section 5: Maintenance Fuse Replacement

The Floor Stands have four fuses in two different locations: two of them are in the Power

Entry Module and the other two are in the Power Supply Housing.

1. Locate the Power Entry Module, located on the right rear side of the power supply unit.

Remove the power input cord from the supply outlet and from the Power Entry

Module and leave it unplugged. Failure to unplug power can cause a shock hazard.

2. Using a small flat blade screwdriver, open the hinged

entry door by inserting the blade of the screwdriver into the

slot located at the top portion of the module. Gently pull the

door backward to open it. With the same screwdriver, gently

pry the fuse holder loose then slide it out to expose the two

fuses.

These fuses protect the Battery Back-up circuitry and failure

will result in battery operation but not recharging. If these

fuses are blown, replace with the appropriate fuse in the

Fusing Specifications table below for AC Power.

Be sure to reinstall the fuse-holder in the same orientation in which it was positioned before

removal.

Fuse Replacement (Light Head)

3. The battery is protected from a light head failure by the fuses in the Power Supply

Enclosure at the top of the upright (See Photo 3, 4, 5). The failure of these fuses will

result in the power indicator on the display of the light not being lit.

4. Carefully examine all fuses and check for any sign of malfunction including broken or

burned fuse wire or glass enclosure. If the fuse(s) need to be replaced see the following

table for DC Power.

5. If the unit should continue to blow fuses, do not use the unit; contact the factory

immediately.

CAUTION: To Reduce the Risk of Fire: Replace the fuse(s) only with the same

type and electrical rating as indicated on the fuse replacement label.
