PreparingtheMower

Procedure
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurfaceanddisengagethe
blade-controlswitch.
2.Movethemotion-controlleversoutwardtothepark
position,stoptheengine,removethekey,andwaitfor
allmovingpartstostopbeforeleavingtheoperating
position.
3.Removethemowerdeckfromthemachine.Refer
totheRemovingtheMowersectionintheOperator's
ManualortheappropriatesectionoftheServiceManual.
WARNING
Thespringisundertensionwheninstalled
andcancausepersonalinjury.
Becarefulwhenremovingthemowerbeltand
deck.
4.Slidethemowerdeckoutfromunderneaththe
machine.
5.Removethedeckspringfromtheidlerarm.
Important:Makenoteofthedeckspring
orientation.Itmustbeinstalledinthissamehook
endorientation.
6.Turnthemowerupsidedown.
7.Usinggloves,removeanydebrisandgrassclippings
fromtheundersideofthedeck.
8.Somemodelshaveacut-offbafelocatednearthe
dischargeopening(Figure1).Removethebafeifitis
present.Retainthepartsforfutureuse.

Withoutthegrassdeector,dischargecover,or
completegrasscatcherassemblymountedin
place,youandothersareexposedtobladecontact
andthrowndebris.Contactwithrotatingmower
blade(s)andthrowndebriswillcauseinjuryor
death.
Neverremovethegrassdeectorfromthemower
becausethegrassdeectorroutesmaterialdown
towardtheturf.Ifthegrassdeectorisever
damaged,replaceitimmediately.
Neverputyourhandsorfeetunderthemower.
Nevertrytoclearthedischargeareaormower
bladesunlessyoumovethebladecontrolswitch
(PTO)todisengageandturntheignitionkeyto
off.Alsoremovethekeyandpullthewireoff
thesparkplug(s).
Note:Tousethemowerinsidedischargemode,onlythe
rightbafemustberemoved.Mountinghardwaremustbe
installedinopenholes.
1.Stoptheengineandremovetheignitionkey.
2.Removethe2knobsandcurvedwashersthatsecure
therightbafetothemower.
3.Removetherightbafeandlowerthegrassdeector
overthedischargeopening.
Important:Ensurethemowerhasahingedgrass
deectorthatdispersesclippingstothesideand
downtowardtheturf,whileinsidedischarge
mode.
4.Installthefastenersyouremovedpreviouslyintothe
holesinthetopofthemowertopreventyingdebris.

SelectingtheProperHeight-of-Cut
SettingtoSuittheConditions
Removeapproximately1inchornomorethat1/3ofthe
grassbladewhencutting.Inexceptionallylushanddense
grassyoumayhavetoraisetheheight-of-cutsettinganother
notchorconverttosidedischargeorbaggingoperations.

MowinginExtremeConditions
Airisrequiredtocutandrecutgrassclippingsinthemower
housing,sodonotsettheheight-of-cuttoolowortotally
surroundthehousingbyuncutgrass.Alwayshaveoneside
ofthemowerhousingfreefromuncutgrass,allowingairto
bedrawnintohousing.Whenmakinganinitialcutthrough
thecenteroftheuncutarea,operatethemachineataslower
speedandbackupifthemowerstartstoclog.
MowingattheProperIntervals
Undernormalconditionsyou'llneedtomowevery4-5days.
However,grassgrowsatdifferentratesatdifferenttimes.
Thus,inordertomaintainthesameheight-of-cut,which
isagoodpractice,you'llneedtocutmorefrequentlyin
earlyspring;asthegrassgrowthrateslowsinmidsummer,
cutonlyevery8-10days.Ifyouareunabletomowforan
extendedperiodduetotheweatherconditionsorother
reasons,converttosidedischargeorbaggingoptionsormow
rstwiththeheight-of-cutatahighlevel;thenmowagain2-3
dayslaterwithalowerheightsetting.
MowingwithSharpBlades
Asharpbladecutscleanlyandwithouttearingorshredding
thegrassbladelikeadullblade.Tearingandshreddingcauses
thegrasstoturnbrownattheedgeswhichimpairsgrowth
andincreasessusceptibilitytodisease.
CleaningafterOperating
Toensureoptimumperformance,cleantheundersideofthe
mowerhousing.Ifresidueisallowedtobuildupinmower
housing,cuttingperformancewilldecrease.
