Introduction
This Getting Started Guide contains installation procedures and configuration guidelines for installing the
SonicWall Email Security 9.2 Software on your network.
SonicWall Email Security provides effective, high-performance and easy-to-use inbound and outbound email
threat protection. Ideal for the small to medium size business, this self-running, self-updating software delivers
powerful protection against spam, virus and phishing attacks in addition to preventing leaks of confidential
information. Combining anti-spam, anti-phishing, content filtering, policy management and content compliance
capabilities in a single seamlessly integrated solution, SonicWall Email Security provides powerful protection
without complexity.
Please read this entire Getting Started Guide before setting up your SonicWall Email Security software and
note that an updated version of this guide may exist. For SonicWall Email Security documentation, refer to the

System Requirements
Before installing SonicWall Email Security, review the following requirements.
NOTE: SonicWall TotalSecure Email provides complete protection from spam, virus attacks and
phishing. Without TotalSecure Email, to use the spam and phishing protection provided by
SonicWall Email Security, you must have a subscription to SonicWall Email Protection and Dynamic
Support. If you need to purchase a subscription, contact your SonicWall vendor.
NOTE: SonicWall Email Security requires the latest Chrome, Firefox, or Edge browser.

Operating System
SonicWall Email Security Software release supports the following operating systems:
• Microsoft Windows Server 2012
• Microsoft Windows Server 2016
Hardware
SonicWall Email Security Software release requires the following hardware:
• Processor: 4 Core Processor
• 8GB RAM minimum, 16GB strongly recommended
• Hard Disk: 160GB minimum. Your storage needs are based on your mail volume, quarantine size,
archived data, and auditing settings
• SonicWall recommends installing SonicWall Email Security software on a dedicated server
HTTPS Connectivity to License Manager
Email Security products communicate with the SonicWall License Manager servers using the default HTTPS port.
The Upstream firewalls in the network where this Email Security system is deployed must allow HTTPS
communication on port 443 that is initiated from the 9.2 upgrade process.
Software Requirements
SonicWall Email Security Software release requires the following:
• A Web browser with the popup blocker disabled. You can disable the popup blocker temporarily for the
installation.
• Java and Tomcat should be uninstalled before installing Email Security. For instructions, see Uninstalling
Third-Party Software on page 17.
NOTE: Remote Analyzers (split-mode setup), on Windows servers, only require 4GB RAM and 80GB HD
space.
NOTE: To test connectivity in SonicWall Email Security 9.2, click the Test Connectivity to SonicWall
button on the System > License Management page in the user interface. If the test fails, check your
firewall to be sure that outbound HTTPS communication is allowed.

Creating a MySonicWall Account
A MySonicWall account is required in order to download the software image and for product registration. If you
already have an account, continue to Downloading Email Security Software on page 6.
You must have a MySonicWall.com account to use dynamic licensing for SonicWall Email Security. If you do not
already have one, creating a MySonicWall.com account is fast, simple, and FREE. Simply complete an online
registration form.
To create a MySonicWall account:
1 In your browser, go to https://www.MySonicWall.com/.
2 On the Login page, click Sign Up.
3 Complete the Registration form, then click Register.
4 Follow the prompts to finish creating your account. SonicWall will email a subscription code to the email
address you entered in the personal information.
5 Verify that the information is correct and click Submit.
6 When you return to the login screen, log in with your new username and password.
7 Confirm your account by entering the subscription code you received by email.
Congratulations! You have created and logged into your MySonicWall.com account.

Installing Email Security Software
This section describes the Email Security Software installation process.

SonicWall Email Security Software Software installer includes the following components:
• Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment
• Apache Tomcat
• SonicWall Email Security Software
A few considerations:
• Ensure that you have write access to the data directory in which you want to install SonicWall Email
Security Software software.
• If you have anti-virus programs running on the machines where you install SonicWall Email Security
Software, make sure that those programs do not scan SonicWall Email Security Software installation or
data directories. If virus scanning for these directories is not disabled, the SonicWall Email Security
Software data directory may become corrupted and quarantined messages may not be retrievable.
• If you have Tomcat or JDK installed, it is required that you uninstall them prior to installing SonicWall
Email Security Software software. For directions, refer to Uninstalling Third-Party Software on page 17.
The versions required for the SonicWall Email Security Software software will be automatically installed.
Downloading Email Security Software
You must be logged in to the host system as an administrator to install SonicWall Email Security Software
software. SonicWall Email Security Software’s installer alerts you if your system does not have the required
physical memory. SonicWall requires you to upgrade the memory of your server to a minimum of 1 GB for
optimal effectiveness and performance.
You must have a valid SonicWall Email Security Software software serial number to install SonicWall Email
Security Software software. The software serial number is provided when you purchase the SonicWall Email
Security Software software, and can be found on the tri-fold postcard or email that confirmed your order. If you
do not have a SonicWall Email Security Software software serial number, contact your SonicWall vendor.

To download SonicWall Email Security Software software:
1 Open a Web browser on your Windows server and navigate to MySonicWall.com. Log in using your
MySonicWall account username and password. To create an account, refer to Creating a MySonicWall
Account on page 5.
2 Click the Add Product icon. The QUICK REGISTER page appears.
3 Enter your serial number, found on the tri-fold postcard or email that confirmed your SonicWall Email
Security Software order, in the Enter serial number or activation key field and click Confirm. The
REGISTER A PRODUCT page appears.
4 Give your software a friendly name in the Friendly Name field.
5 Enter the authentication code in the Authentication code field.
6 Select SonicWall Products from the drop-down menu.
7 Click Register. Optionally fill out the survey before proceeding. Survey information is not sold.
8 A green banner at the top of the screen displays a successful registration message.
9 Navigate to Resources and Support > My Downloads.
10 Select Email Security Software Series from the Select a Product drop-down menu.
11 Click the arrow next to Email Security Software Windows to expand available options.
12 To download firmware, click the download icon next to Email Security Software Windows 64-Bit
New Install. A File Download warning displays.
13 Click Save and save the file to an easy to remember location.
Installing Email Security Software
To install SonicWall Email Security Software :
1 Locate the SonicWall Email Security Software installation file you downloaded in Downloading Email
Security Software on page 6. Double click the installation file to open it. Click Run to continue. It may
take several seconds while the installation wizard initializes.
2 The Welcome to Email Security Software page displays. Click Next.
3 The License Agreement page displays. Read it and click Next to accept the License Agreement.
4 The Destination Folder page displays. Click Browse to select an alternate folder, or click Next to accept
the default location. It is important that this folder is not scanned by an anti-virus engine.
5 The Choose Data Folder page displays. Click Browse to select an alternate folder, or click Next to accept
the default location.
If you are deploying multiple SonicWall Email Security Software servers that share a folder, specify the
shared folder for your data. For performance reasons, read/write access to the data directory must be
fast. If the data directory is on the same disk drive as the install directory, it is likely fast enough. If the
data directory is shared between two or more computers, or is on a different device than the install
directory, ensure that performance requirements are met. As a general rule, there should be at least a
100 Megabit connection to the data drive and less than 10 millisecond latency to the data drive. Latency
can be tested with the ping command.
NOTE: MySonicWall.com user names and passwords are case sensitive.

6 The Start Installation page displays. Click Next to begin installation. The installation progress displays.
7 If the required versions of Tomcat, Firebird, and the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) are not installed, a
prompt to install them will display. Click Install.
8 You will be prompted to specify an Apache Tomcat Web server port number. The default port number is
80. If you are already running a Web server on port 80, you must change the port setting. SonicWall
recommends port 8080. Click Next to continue.
You can change the port number and configure HTTPS access after installation using the Server
Configuration > User View Setup page of the user interface.
The remaining installation may take a long time. You may see various windows display. No action is
required during these processes.
9 The Installation Complete page displays. Click Finish.
A browser window displays, providing links to the Email Security Software user interface and documentation.

Logging Into SonicWall Email Security
To log into the SonicWall Email Security software:
1 To launch SonicWall Email Security software, launch a browser and enter the Email Securityserver IP
address/host name.
If you assigned a web server port number other than 80, you will need to add the port number to the
Web address to manually access the Email Securitysoftware user interface, using this format:
<http://localhost:port/login.html>.
For example, if you assigned port 8080, the address would be:
<http://localhost:8080/login.html>.
2 The login page displays. Enter admin in the User Name field and password in the Password field.
3 Click Log In.
4 If this is the first time you have logged into Email Security, you must provide email addresses for the
administrator and postmaster, as well as the SMTP server hostname or IP address. Type the email
address of the administrator who will receive emergency alerts, the email of the MTA postmaster who
will receive non-deliverable receipts, and the name or IP address of the SMTP servers.

5 Click Apply Changes.
The SonicWall Email Security user interface displays. If your license is not yet activated, the License
Management screen prompts you to log into your MySonicWall.com account to begin the dynamic
licensing process. For licensing instructions, see Purchasing or Upgrading Email Security License
Subscriptions on page 12.

Registering Your Email SecurityAppliance
You must register your SonicWall Email Security Appliance before first use. Registration is performed using the
appliance management interface. When registration is completed, SonicWall Email Security will be licensed on
your appliance.
To register your Email Security appliance:
1 Log in to your SonicWall Email Security Software appliance. The MANAGE | License Management page
displays.

2 In the Administration section, enter your MySonicWall.com credentials and click LOGIN.
3 The Administration section displays. Enter the Serial Number, Authentication Code, and Friendly Name
in the fields provided.

4 Click SUBMIT. A confirmation page appears stating the registration is completed successfully.
5 Click CONTINUE. The License Management page displays service subscription and license information.
Purchasing or Upgrading Email Security License
Subscriptions
SonicWall Email Security provides dynamic licensing, which allows you to activate your licenses by simply
logging into your MySonicWall.com account and entering the serial number and authentication code that came
with your purchase of Email Security software. Most of the licensing process takes place on MySonicWall.com
and not the administration interface.
To purchase or upgrade your Email Security license subscriptions:
1 Log in to MySonicWall.com.
2 Navigate to Product Management > My Products. The My Products page displays.

3 Find the friendly name for Email Security and click the Licenses icon. The LICENSES page displays.
4 To purchase a service, click the purchase icon next to the service.
5 To try a service, click the Try icon next to the service.
6 To use an product activation key, click the key icon next to the service.
7 You can check that the registration is correct by logging in to your SonicWall Email Security
administration site and clicking System/License Management. All your license information should be
available. If it is not, click the Test Connectivity to SonicWall button to check that you are connected.
If you purchased Total Secure Email, licensing is automatic and you do not need to take any action at all to
activate your licenses.

Overview of the Email SecurityInterface
This section describes the SonicWall Email Security management interface.

Changing the Default Administrator Password
Change the default password for security reasons.
To change the default password:
1 In the Email Security management interface, navigate to the MANAGE |System Setup | Server >
Administration page.
2 In the Email Security Master Account section, enter the old password in the Old Password field.
3 Enter a new management password into the New Password field.
4 Enter the new password again in the Confirm Password field.
5 Click Apply Changes.

Routing Mail to Your Email Security Software
For your SonicWall Email Security software to start filtering and monitoring mail, you must re-route mail traffic
through your SonicWall Email Security software. Mail traffic must pass from the Internet to the software, and
then the software sends the good mail on to your mail server.
You have two choices to route mail traffic to your SonicWall Email Security software before your mail server:
• Change the MX record in your DNS server to resolve to the IP address of your SonicWall Email Security
software. You may have to work with your ISP to change this record.
• Create a rule in your firewall or router to route all port 25 (SMTP mail) traffic to your SonicWall Email
Security software. Refer to your firewall or router documentation for instructions on creating rules to
route traffic.
Verifying Mail from the Internet
To verify mail from the Internet:
1 Go to an external mail account, for example Yahoo mail or GMail.
2 Create a new email message:
3 Send the message.
4 In the SonicWall Email Security software administrative interface, click the Auditing button on the top.
5 Check the Inbound auditing reports to make sure the email appears as Delivered.

6 Check the mail account you sent the message to. If you received the message, you have correctly
configured your SonicWall Email Security software.
Configuring Outbound Mail Filtering
Your SonicWall Email Security software can filter outbound mail from your mail server to the Internet. To
configure outbound mail filtering, you configure both your mail server and your SonicWall Email Security
software for the outbound mail path.
Configure the outbound mail destination of your mail server to point to the IP address or host name of your
SonicWall Email Security software. This is typically done by configuring a Smart Host on your mail server.
On your SonicWall Email Security software, in the Server Configuration > Network Architecture page, configure
a separate, outbound path to handle the outbound email flow at the software (if not already configured).
Configure the path to use the MTA (MX routing or SmartHost) under Destination of Path.
Configure something unique between the inbound and outbound path to distinguish inbound from outbound
mail flow. A very simple way to do this is to have them listen on different ports or enter the IP address of the
Exchange Server as the Source IP Contacting Path on the outbound path.
Example
Given:
10.100.0.10: Exchange Server (exch1.example.com)
10.100.0.100: SonicWall Email Security software (esa.example.com)
You might have two paths like this:
Source IP Listen On Destination
Inbound Any Any:25 (proxy) exch1.example.com:25
Outbound 10.100.0.10 Any:25 MX
In this scenario, any message that arrives at the SonicWall Email Security software from 10.100.0.10 will be
treated as an outbound message, handed off to the MTA component in the system, which will deliver the
message via MX-lookup on the domain in the TO field. Messages that arrive at the SonicWall Email Security
software from any other IP address will be treated as an Inbound message, and delivered directly to the
Exchange server. The SonicWall Email Security software always gives preference to specific matches (for
example an exact IP address match takes precedence over “Any”).
Another example using port numbers to distinguish which path a message should take:
Source IP Listen On Destination
Inbound Any Any:25 (proxy) exch1.example.com:25
Outbound Any Any:2525 MX
Another alternative would be to assign your SonicWall Email Security software multiple IP addresses, and have it
listen on one for inbound and one for outbound.
In all of the above cases, the admin will configure Exchange to deliver outbound email to the IP address and port
number where the SonicWall Email Security software is listening for outbound mail.
To test your SonicWall Email Security software, click the Auditing button at the top of the SonicWall Email
Security software user interface and search for your sent email to verify it has been sent and received.

Uninstalling Third-Party Software
SonicWall Email Security software automatically installs Tomcat and JDK. If versions of these programs are
already installed, it is necessary to uninstall them prior to installing SonicWall Email Security software, following
the instructions below.
If you have already installed SonicWall Email Security and a conflict exists with the wrong versions of third-party
software, it is necessary to uninstall the conflicting versions of the software and re-install the SonicWall Email
Security software.
To uninstall Apache Tomcat or Java, perform the following steps:
1 Navigate to Start > Control Panel > Add or remove programs.
2 Select a version of Tomcat or Java you need to install.
3 Click Change/Remove.
4 Follow the on-screen prompts to uninstall or remove the program.
Refer to Installing Email Security Software on page 7, to install SonicWall Email Security software.
Confirming Windows Services Are Running
If you have trouble accessing the SonicWall Email Security login page, verify that the SonicWall Email Security
services are running. Navigate to Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Services and confirm that the
following services have started:
• Apache Tomcat
• MlfAsg Software
• MlfAsg Monitor
• MlfAsg Replicator
• MlfAsg Updater
• Firebird Guardian
• Firebird Server
