Introduction
Gateway 500 from Dension is a vehicle-speci c kit that enables
connection and control of media players (e.g. iPod), USB  ash
drives and other USB mass storage devices (e.g. Hard Drives) with
FAT  le system by emulating an external CD changer and connects
directly to the car’s entertainment system. An AUX IN connection
is available for players otherwise not compatible with the device.
This hard-wired solution delivers CD-quality audio and safe con-
trol of the players from the vehicle’s entertainment system con-
trols. Device provides also a standard video output to watch iPod
movies on the car entertainment system if available.
Gateway 500 supports the 4th generation, Photo, mini, nano and
the 5th generation (video) iPod models. For the latest list of sup-
ported media players please visit www.dension.com.
This manual assumes that Gateway 500 is already installed in
your vehicle. For assistance with installation please refer to the in-
stallation guide.
Regarding the general use of the media player, related software
like iTunes and your car’s entertainment system please consult the
related operating manuals.

You can keep using your existing CD Changer. This feature requires
a compatible head unit and CD Changer.

unit only when stationary or ask passengers to operate it for you.

Getting started
Is your player up-to-date?
Before you start, please check your player Firmware, and make sure
it is upgraded to the latest version available. For iPod rmware visit
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod. Dension only guarantees
proper functionality with the latest version of  rmware.
We recommend setting up playlists on the player for easier naviga-
tion of music with the car radio or steering wheel controls.
Study the Manual of your Audio System!
Please study the owner’s manual for your head unit. This guide
cannot provide detailed and speci c support regarding the vari-
ous system speci c features, like:
Source selection (CD-changer mode)
• Disc selection
Seek Forward and Seek Backward
Repeat, Random (aka Shu e or Mix), Scan
If your head unit has limited opportunities you can use less fea-
tures of the Gateway 500.
Mode selector / Service mode
The AUX box is de nitely needed for usage as it serves both as the
reset button and the mode selector switch.
For using the conventional CD Changer select it with the Mode selector
switch.
When you want to change between the CD changer and the Gate-
way 500 set the mode selector switch to the right position, then
turn of the ignition /and head unit/.
For change become e ective the D2B system must shut down. The
time needed for it depends on the car type. Please refer to the car
manufacturer for exact information.
After all, turn on the ignition and select the CD changer on the
head unit, the chosen source will start playing.
Please NOTE
When your have your car serviced you must set the mode selector
switch to service mode /bypass, CD changer/ position otherwise
the service computer may detect an unknown device in the  ber
optic system which can lead to errors reported.

Using of ice>Link Gateway 500
Device selection
Gateway 500 automatically detects the iPod and the USB device
when connected to the interface and selects as a source. When
both iPod and USB device are connected iPod will be selected. To
select the USB device, disconnect iPod. To use the AUX-IN discon-
nect iPod and USB device.
Note, that the Gateway 500 saves the actual playback position of USB
devices if they are disconnected or when the ignition is turned o .
Connection or disconnection of iPod or the USB device will au-
tomatically initiate a Magazine Eject/Magazine Load sequence.
If head unit goes into tuner (FM) mode, select CD Changer again
manually. This is the normal behavior of certain head units.
Playback control
After you set Gateway 500 on device selector switch, select CD
Changer as source on the head unit to start playback of the select-
ed source device. Playback control buttons, like NEXT/PREVIOUS
TRACK ( ), SEEK FW ( ), SEEK BW ( ), RANDOM, REPEAT, SCAN
work as expected, while PAUSE stops playback and mutes audio.
Due to the di erent characteristic of the playback devices (play-
ers), there are slight di erences in operation. See device speci c
sections for details.
iPod Operation
Connect the iPod to the Gateway 500 via the docking cable or
by inserting it into the active cradle – depending on your choice
at purchase.
Deselecting the CD Changer source or switching o the radio will
pause the iPod, it will then turn o automatically after few minutes.
Operating modes
Gateway 500 has two operating modes connected to an iPod:
You can select either at any time to best  t your application and
current needs. Both User Interfaces have their bene ts.

Dension User Interface
Turn on the radio, and select CD
Changer as source. A warning
message and the “OK to Dis-
connect” message will appear
which means you can discon-
nect the iPod any time. The iPod
will start playing the previously
played song.
During playback the Track# and
Elapsed Time data is transferred
to the radio display, while the
song information (Album,
Artist, Title) and playback status
appears on the iPod screen.
Note:
Track number on the radio is limited to 2 digits; the iPod track
number is always truncated as such.
If your car radio supports repeat, random and scan, you may select/
deselect Repeat, Random and Scan functions. Mode indicators are
also shown on iPod display as follows:
Repeat iPod is set to repeat mode
Repeat One iPod is set to repeat one mode
Shu e iPod is set to shu e mode
Scan iPod plays 10 sec of a song, than
skip to the next one.
Press Prev track key to
revert to normal play.
If car radio does not support above features, use the iPod to set
random or repeat mode, before you connect it to the Gateway
500. Changing modes on iPod while not connected to the Gateway
500 may not be recognized automatically by the head unit.
Direct playlist access
For faster selection of music in the Dension User Interface, the  rst
four playlists (in alphabetical order) may be activated directly by
selecting Disc#1-4. (Hint: Pre x your playlists with numbers to get
them associated with the desired direct access button, e.g. 1Rock,
2Pop, 3Classic, etc.)
After connecting the iPod to Gateway 500, it will continue playing
the actual play program, and the disc number will be #5. Because
of this, if you would like to listen to all the titles from your iPod,
choose any other Playlist and then choose Disc#5 (Play all) again.
When using more than 4 playlists, please use the playlist browser
function in the Gateway 500 Menu. You can also choose an album
or artist using the browser in the Menu.
Menu
The Gateway 500 Menu gives you a comprehensive feature set in
order to maximize the use of the iPod in your car. You can reach the
functions from the head unit:
Enter the Menu select Disc#6
Navigate and scroll in Menu Next/Previous track
Select the highlighted option Seek Forward
Return to the previous level Seek Backward

After 30 seconds of inactivity Gateway 500 will exit Menu
automatically.
Note: Disc select / Next / Back / Seek functions may have di erent
interpretation in di erent cars. Please consult the operating manual
of your car’s entertainment system to learn the exact details.
Menu Options
Access iPod UI
Select this option in the menu to activate iPod User Interface.
It can happen that the head unit does not have / functions. In
this case navigate to this item, and after 30 sec timeout the iPod UI
mode will be activated automatically.
To return to Dension UI, select Disc#6 /Menu/ from iPod UI.
Browsers
These three menu items give you access to the Playlist, Artist and
Album browsers.
Use them to  nd and select
music you want to listen.

Selecting the name of your iPod
in the Playlist Browser starts
playing all the songs stored on
the iPod.
Notes:
• iPod and iTunes may generate some standard playlist items such
as On-the-go, Recently Played, Top 25 Most Played, 60’s Music, etc.

AlbumPlay
Browsing a large music collection on the iPod can take some time!
We’ve assumed that users may:
store entire albums on iPod
organize playlist by styles and
favorites, or
frequently listen to iPod in
shu e mode
If so, AlbumPlay is a great feature for adding more control to your
in-car listening:
If you hear a song that you like and want to hear every song from
that album, just select AlbumPlay. All songs from that album will
be played in sequence.
The iPod will play the next album when the end of the Album is
reached.
Charge
You can select your preferred iPod charging option by repeated
activation of function:

Warning: the iPod may eventually deplete its battery reserves
in Charge o mode. If this occurs, you will have to charge it from
a separate power source before you can alter the charge control
option in the Menu.
iPod User Interface
Alternatively you can change to iPod User Interface and use iPod’s
ordinary control functions. Also extra functions provided by
Gateway 500.
Select the relevant Disc#  rst than use or to activate a control
function. In case of repeated use of a function or its pair selection
of the same Disc# is not necessary, use / only

In iPod User Interface mode the displayed track number and
elapsed time is irrelevant and not related to the played track.
Selecting Disc#6 automatically returns to the Dension User
Interface after 5 seconds.
USB Device Operation
Gateway 500 supports  ash drives and USB mass storage devices
(e.g. Hard Drives).
Playback control
Playback from the USB device is controlled with the CD selection
and track change buttons.
Direct folder access
Select Disc#1…4 to access one of the  rst four folders in the
device’s Music Root, the highest level directory which contains a
playable music  le or a subdirectory with such le. Music  les will
be played in alphabetic order, sorting is not case sensitive.

Play All
Select Disc#5 to play the whole content of the device. Music  les
will be played  rst, then directories recursively in Music Root. This
is the default operating mode when the device is  rst connected.
SearchFolder
This feature enables quick search for a sub-folder in the current
playing program.
Select Disc#6 to enter SearchFolder mode. Use the buttons to
browse sub-folders and listen in to their content ( rst track). If the
buttons are not used for 30 seconds, USB player will revert to normal
mode. Activate or function if you do not want to wait.
Playable le formats
USB player can playback most of the popular  le formats, like
MP3, AAC, OGG and WMA. Playback of protected content is not
supported.
File system on the USB device must be FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32.
AUX Operation
All track, play and Disc# controls are dummy, except Pause which
will mute audio.
Use of original CD Changer
Select the CD Changer with the Mode Switch of the AUX box as it
was written before and select CD changer on the head unit. Then
Gateway 500 will put through the original changer and everything
will work as in the owner’s manual of the car.
Please note, it is not possible to use CD Changer and the Gateway
500 at the same time. Disable Changer with the Bypass Switch in
order to listen iPod, USB or AUX ports.
Troubleshooting
You cannot switch your radio to CD changer mode:
1. Check that the mode selector switch is in the right position.
2. Make sure that the time you have waited was enough for the
optical system to shut down.
3. Reset Gateway 500. Push the reset button on the top of the
AUX box
4. Consult with your installer or contact your local Dension
support centre.
You cannot control the iPod from the radio:
1. Make sure the  rmware on your iPod is the most recent. For
updates please visit www.apple.com/ipod
2. Reset the iPod. On the click-wheel iPods hold the centre button
and the Menu buttons. (Resetting will not erase your music; it
will only restart the operating system of iPod.)
iPod does not turn on:
1. Verify that the iPods battery is not depleted by attempting to
turn it on without connecting it to the car.
2. Turn o both your car stereo and the iPod before inserting it
to the cradle. Power on your radio and select the appropriate
source.

Software Information:
1. At startup of the D2B optical system (when turning on ignition
and the head unit), the connected iPod will show the Gateway
500 software version and the selected car con guration.

The Dension ice>Link Gateway carries a one year limited warranty
that protects you from defects in material and workmanship of
products sold by Dension or its authorized agents, distributors
and dealers. We do not warrant any installation. If you experience
any problem or need help, please contact your local dealer or visit
support.dension.com.
Proof of purchase is required.
Warranty does not cover normal tear and wear, damages due to
negligence, improper installation or operation.

please disconnect your ice>Link rst and have it checked by your
