2.1 Proper use
The system is exclusively designed to treat water.
The system may only be used in compliance with the technical data and specifications
stated in the operating instructions!
All other uses or modifications are prohibited.
The system may only be operated by specially trained and authorised personnel!
You are obliged to observe the information in the operating instructions on the various life
phases of the system!
2.2 Notes on safety
WARNING
UV C radiation is harmful to eyes and skin.
Only switch on the UV lamps when installed!
Properly install the UV disinfection system before commissioning the lamps!
An incorrectly calibrated UV C sensor cannot perform its monitoring function. Given
unfavourable circumstances, insufficiently disinfected water may reach the consumer.
For applications with high disinfection demands (e.g. drinking water disinfection), the
downstream pipings are to be disinfected by e.g. high chlorination before
commissioning.
This is in particular required in case of lines already contaminated by germs.
Ensure that
the maximum permissible water flow rate is not exceeded, and
the minimum permissible UV transmission is not undershot,
because otherwise no sufficient disinfection is guaranteed!
In case of longer operation of the UV disinfection system without flow, the water
temperature is to be monitored and the system is to be deactivated, if required!
The place of installation must be dry and protected against freezing and must
guarantee that the UV disinfection system is protected against chemicals, dyes, and
vapours.
The ambient temperature as well as the radiation temperature close-by may not
exceed 40 °C.

Notes on safety / Function / Control
If solid particles or clouding agents are present in the water to be disinfected, a
suitable filter is to be installed upstream of the disinfection system!
Make sure that the maximum permissible operating pressure stated in the enclosed
datasheet is not exceeded!
Disconnect from mains supply before mounting and connecting the UV lamps!
Switch on the system only after having filled the radiation chamber with water!
NOTE
Please observe the datasheet enclosed with the Dulcodes UV disinfection system!
3 Function
The water to be disinfected flows through the stainless steel radiation chamber along the UV
lamps. The UV radiation safely kills the germs.
The low pressure UV lamps generate a high-yield UV C radiation with a wavelength of 254nm
which is especially effective for disinfection. The lamps are housed in lamp protection tubes
made of high-quality quartz with a high level of UV transparency.
The compact design of the radiation chamber, the optimised flow as well as the in-built
turbulators guarantee an uniform radiation of the entire water flow.
Together with the UV C sensor, the control monitors the UV disinfection system.
The UV lamp is ignited after activating the UV disinfection system. After ignition, it may take
several minutes until the lamp has reached its operating temperature and provides the full UV C
output.
The UV C sensor monitors the lamps. As soon as the sensor signal exceeds the safety
threshold, the shut-off valve (optional) opens.
If the sensor signal does not exceed the safety threshold within 5 minutes, the lamp is
deactivated. The system goes into error mode.
If the system is running, it continues to monitor the UV C output. If the sensor signal drops
below the alarm threshold, an alarm message appears on the display. In case of a drop below
the safety threshold, the shut-off valve (optional) closes. If the sensor signal does not exceed
the safety threshold again within 1 minute, the lamp is deactivated. The system goes into error
mode.
For certain applications, an oxidant has to be added intermittently to the water to be
disinfected. If the added oxidant is highly UV-absorbent (e.g. hydrogen peroxide), the sensor
signal may drop below the safety threshold. In order to prevent that the UV disinfection system
then goes into error mode, the error message can be suppressed. In case of a suppressed error
message, the lamp continues to operate even if the safety threshold is undershot.
4 Control
Version Because the electronics and software are continuously improved, the version number was
introduced as an identification means. This number is to be stated for inquiries and complaints.
The version number is shown on the display for 2 seconds after having activated the system.
4.1 Display
This system uses a graphical display.
The version number, the operating hours of the control as well as the total number of lamp
activations are shown on the display for 2 seconds after having activated the system.
The standard display shows the UV C output of the UV lamp in Wm
2
, the alarm threshold, the
safety threshold as well as the lamp operating hours and the number of lamp activations.

4.3 Calibration of UV sensor
WARNING
Only a correctly calibrated UV C sensor guarantees sufficient disinfection.
When calibrating the UV C sensor, the water to be disinfected must flow through the
radiation chamber.
IMPORTANT
When calibrating the UV C sensor, a new UV lamp must be used and the lamp protection
tube as well as the sensor window must be cleaned.
NOTE
See also Chap. 6.2 “Switching on of the disinfection system“.
The UV C sensor is to be calibrated during commissioning as well as at each lamp replacement.
During calibration, the alarm threshold and the safety threshold are newly set. The operating
hours counter as well as the counter of the lamp activations are reset to zero.
Before calibration, the UV C sensor signal must be stable. A changing sensor signal shows that
the UV lamp has not reached its final operating temperature.

After 2 seconds, the system returns to the standard display. The alarm threshold and the safety
threshold are now newly set. The operating hours counter as well as the counter of the lamp
activations are now reset to zero.
The calibration of the UV C sensor is now complete.
4.4 Connection of the shut-off valve or an operating message unit to
the control
The control is equipped with a switching output to which a shut-off valve or an alarm device can
be connected depending on the configuration.
For drinking water disinfection or similar applications, it is necessary to install an automatic
shut-off valve downstream of the UV disinfection system. This ensures that only sufficiently
disinfected water reaches the consumer.
If a 230V shut-off valve is to be connected to the control, a cable jumper between the terminals
L2 and XR1:1 and the control is required (delivery condition).
The no-load closed shut-off valve is connected to the terminals XR2 and N2 of the control.
As long as the UV C sensor signal exceeds the safety threshold, the cut-off valve is supplied
with supply voltage and the water is transported to the consumer.
For applications which require a switching output instead of a 230V output, the cable jumper
between the terminals L2 and XR1:1 is to be removed.
An operating message unit can now be connected to the terminals XR1:1 and XR1:2 of the
control. As long as the UV C sensor signal drops below the safety threshold or the system is
switched off, the switching contact opens and the interruption is signalled.
4.5 External switching on and off of the UV disinfection system
The UV disinfection system can be switched on and off by switching the power supply.
The system connected to the power supply is to be switched on by pressing the START/STOP
key. Then, the system can be switched on and off by activating or deactivating the power
supply.
5Mounting and installation ≠≠
Please observe the following notes on safety before installing the system:
WARNING
Ensure that
the maximum permissible water flow rate is not exceeded, and
the minimum permissible UV transmission is not undershot,
because otherwise no sufficient disinfection is guaranteed!
The maximum permissible water flow rate is described in the enclose datasheet.
It is a function of the required radiation dose as well as of the minimum permissible UV
transmission of the water to be disinfected.

Mounting and installation
IMPORTANT
The place of installation must be dry and protected against freezing and must
guarantee that the UV disinfection system is protected against chemicals, dyes, and
vapours.
The ambient temperature as well as the radiation temperature close-by may not
exceed 40 °C.
If solid particles or clouding agents are present in the water to be disinfected, a
suitable filter is to be installed upstream of the disinfection system!
Make sure that the maximum permissible operating pressure stated in the enclosed
datasheet is not exceeded!
NOTE
Despite the use of sophisticated lamp ballasts with gentle lamp ignition, the UV
disinfection system is to be operated such that frequent switching on and off of the UV
lamps is avoided.
5.1 Radiation chamber
The type of the radiation chamber is described in the enclose datasheet.
Type vertical wall-mounting, type horizontal or type upright.
5.1.1 Mounting
IMPORTANT
Only the type of mounting listed in the enclosed datasheet is permissible.
Leave sufficient space for maintenance work!
The required clearance is described in the enclosed datasheet!

5.1.2 Fixing of the danger sign
NOTE
The enclosed self-adhesive danger sign is to be affixed well-visibly at the radiation
chamber.
5.1.3 Connections, hydraulic
WARNING
For applications with high disinfection demands (e.g. drinking water disinfection) without
planned interruption of the water flow in cases of failures (e.g. switching off of delivery
pump): Install an automatic shut-off valve downstream of the radiation chamber and
connect it to the control!
The automatic shut-off valve must close automatically such that the water flow is
interrupted even in case of a possible failure of the supply voltage.

Mounting and installation
IMPORTANT
Hydraulically connect the radiation chamber according to the valid general provisions
as well as the local installation regulations!
Use UV-resistant material for hydraulic connections!
When using PVC, a discolouration of the PVC in the connection area is to be expected,
given unfavourable conditions even an embrittlement of the material.
NOTE
•Provide for valves to shut-off the radiation chamber during maintenance work
upstream and downstream of the radiation chamber!
It would be of advantage to provide for valves, which can be flamed and which are
suitable for microbiological sampling, upstream and downstream of the radiation
chamber.
5.2 Control cabinet and control
5.2.1 Mounting
Install the control on the wall or a suitable frame such that the UV lamps as well as the UV C
sensors can be connected using the dedicated cables. (cable length approx. 1.5m for most
systems)
IMPORTANT
Do not extend the lamps’ connecting cables and the sensor cable!
5.2.2 Connections, electrical
The electrical installation is to be performed by an authorised electrical engineer using the
documentation (connection diagram) provided.
WARNING
Observe the valid general provisions as well as the local installation regulations!
Perform installation work only if the system is off circuit!
Connect the protective connector to the radiation chamber!
Do not extend the lamps’ connecting cables and the sensor cable!
5.2.3 Opening of control
The control only needs to be opened to connect a non-pre-mounted shut-off valve or an alarm

5.2.4 Connection of the pre-mounted shut-off valve to the control
(optional)
If the system is equipped with a pre-mounted shut-off valve, the valve is to be connected to the
control. Connect the mains connector of the shut-off valve to the valve and tighten.
5.2.5 Accessing the software version “Suppression of error message”
For certain applications, an oxidant has to be added intermittently to the water to be
disinfected. If the added oxidant is highly UV-absorbent (e.g. hydrogen peroxide), the sensor
signal may drop below the safety threshold. In order to prevent that the UV disinfection system
then goes into error mode, the error message can be suppressed. In case of a suppressed error
message, the lamp continues to operate even if the safety threshold is undershot.
The control is to be opened (see 5.2.3) to access the function "Suppression of error message".
Then, remove the jumper according to figure 5 and re-connect the control.

Ensure that the lamp protection tube is positioned correctly!
The lamp protection tube may protrude 40mm at the most and may show no angular
offset.
Check whether the Teflon ring is positioned in the pertinent groove of the bracket of
the lamp protection tube (see Figure 7)! Otherwise, insert the Teflon ring into the
bracket of the lamp protection tube until it is positioned in the pertinent groove.
Push the bracket of the lamp protection tube onto the lamp protection tube and screw into
the radiation chamber; tighten by hand
Tighten the bracket of the lamp protection tube using the enclosed hook spanner
5.4 Mounting and connection of the UV lamp
WARNING
Disconnect from mains supply before mounting and connecting the UV lamp!
UV C radiation is harmful to eyes and skin.
Only commission the UV lamp when installed!
Properly install the UV disinfection system before commissioning the lamp!
Do not extend the lamps’ connecting cables and the sensor cable!
Do not change the distance between plug and lamp cover!
Otherwise it is not guaranteed that the UV lamp is positioned flush to the closed end of
the lamp protection tube. This is, however, a prerequisite for a safe disinfection.
IMPORTANT
Do not touch the glass of the UV lamp with bare hands!
Fingerprints burn in to the glass and may result in early failures.
Remove fingerprints before the installation using a cloth wetted with alcohol!
NOTE
Please observe the following for a disinfection of water having a water temperature
exceeding 25 °C (as e.g. for bathwater disinfection):
For lamp types equipped with O-rings for guiding in the lamp protection tube, these
guiding rings must be removed before installing the lamp to prevent any overheating of
the lamp.

6 Commissioning
WARNING
For applications with high disinfection demands (e.g. drinking water disinfection), the
downstream pipings are to be disinfected by e.g. high chlorination before commissioning!
This is in particular required in case of lines already contaminated by germs.
6.1 Leakage test and deaeration of the radiation chamber
Open the bleed screw or bleed valve at the radiation chamber
Slowly open the shut-off valve upstream of the radiation chamber
Fill the radiation chamber until water flows from the bleed screw or bleed valve
Close the bleed screw or bleed valve
Check the radiation chamber for leakages
Open the shut-off valve downstream of the radiation chamber (only required in case of
manual shut-off valve)
6.2 Switching on of disinfection system
IMPORTANT
Switch on the system only after having filled the radiation chamber with water!
Switching on Connect the mains plug
To switch on the system, press START/STOP
for 2 seconds
After ignition of the UV lamp, it may take several minutes until the lamp has reached its
operating temperature and provides the full UV C output.
If the UV C sensor signal does not exceed the safety threshold within 5 minutes, the lamp is
deactivated. The system goes into error mode. In this case, proceed as follows:
Press ENTER
for 2 seconds to acknowledge the fault
Press START/STOP
for 2 seconds to reactivate the system
Perform a preliminary calibration of the UV C sensor as described in 6.3 within 5 minutes

Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning of the lamp protection tube
Deposits (e.g. iron, manganese or lime) may form on the lamp protection tube during operation.
These deposits absorb UV radiation and must thus be removed in regular intervals.
NOTE
A cleaning is to be performed at the latest if the UV C sensor signal undershoots the alarm
threshold and if this fact is not the result of other causes such as lamp ageing or
significant deterioration of the UV transmission.
For many UV disinfection systems, an annual cleaning of the lamp protection tube together with
the lamp replacement is sufficient. For UV disinfection systems which are used to disinfect
waster water, partially a cleaning every one to two months is required.
The lamp protection tube can be cleaned when removed or by filling the radiation chamber with
a cleaning solution. In particular acids such as diluted phosphoric acid, citric acid or diluted
nitric acid are suitable for cleaning.
CAUTION
Do not use any corrosion- or stress crack-promoting acids such as hydrochloric acid!
Observe the safety datasheet of the chosen cleaning agent!

Maintenance
NOTE
For radiation chambers which are regularly cleaned by filling with a cleaning solution, it
is recommended to replace the water drain screw as well as the bleed screw by
suitable valves.
For larger radiation chambers, filling through the water drain opening with a suitable,
acid-resistant pump is recommended.
If the radiation chamber is filled with a pump, the cleaning solution should be
circulated through the bleed hole. This reduces the cleaning time and improves the
result.
7.2 Replacement of the UV lamps
WARNING
The UV lamp is to be replaced by a new one at the latest if
the sensor signal approaches the safety threshold and if this fact is not the result of
other causes such as deposits on the lamp protection tube or significant
deterioration of the UV transmission;
the lamp operating hours approach or exceed the maximum service life for the
lamp.
Disconnect from mains supply before mounting and connecting the UV lamps!
UV C radiation is harmful to eyes and skin.
Only commission the UV lamp when installed!
Properly install the UV disinfection system before commissioning the lamp!
Do not extend the already installed lamps’ connecting cables!
For lamp types equipped with O-rings for guiding in the lamp protection tube, these
guiding rings must be removed before installing the lamp to prevent any overheating of
the lamp.
Clean the lamp protection tube each time when replacing a lamp!
To switch off the system, press START/STOP
for 2 seconds
Disconnect the mains plug
Close the shut-off valves upstream and downstream of the radiation chamber
Loosen the knurled nut at the bracket of the lamp protection tube by hand
Pull out the lamp cover such that the connector of the connecting cable can be removed
from the lamp
Remove lamp and place aside
Check whether the O-ring is positioned at the bracket of the lamp protection tube in the
pertinent groove and is not damaged; replace damaged O-ring
Insert the new lamp into the lamp protection tube and let protrude for approx. 100 mm
Connect the connector to the lamp

tighten slightly)
Slowly open the shut-off valve upstream of the radiation chamber
Open the shut-off valve downstream of the radiation chamber (only required in case of
manual shut-off valve)
Connect the mains plug
WARNING
Re-calibrate the UV C sensor after the installation of a new UV lamp!
It is only after a re-calibration that the operating safety of the UV disinfection system is
guaranteed.
7.3 Calibration of the UV C sensor
NOTE
The CALIBRATION key is only released 1 minute after having activated the UV disinfection
system. Thus, the UV C sensor can be calibrated 1 minute after having activated the UV
disinfection system at the earliest.
Calibration Press CALIBRATION
for 2 seconds;
the displayed UV C sensor signal starts to flash
Press ENTER for 2 seconds within 5 seconds;

After 2 seconds, the system returns to the standard display. The alarm threshold and the safety
threshold are now newly set. The operating hours counter as well as the counter of the lamp
activations are now reset to zero.
The calibration of the UV C sensor is now complete.
