THE OVEN SHUTS OFF RANDOMLY
After lighting your oven and during its operation, your oven shuts off for no reason. Below are a few
reasons for this, similar to having issues with the pilot staying lit. Problems around the oven pilot lighting
or the oven staying lit are related, assuming you can get the pilot to light, to begin with.
1. The thermocouple tip is dirty (sooted up)
a. Reason – the tip of the thermocouple can become dirty due to various reasons. Soot will
insulate the thermocouple tip reducing millivolt transfer to the oven electromagnet. The
magnet then drops out, shutting the gas flow to the oven and the pilot.
b. Suggested solution – take emery cloth, toothbrush, fine sandpaper, or other item and
clean off the soot on the thermocouple tip. You can access the thermocouple tip by
opening the broiler drawer, looking in the middle back of the range. It's a long reach-in.
Once clean, try lighting the pilot again. Make sure you hold the oven knob in for at least
a count of 10. Then run your oven and test its operation
c. Resolve if the above worked –keep the thermocouple tip clean from time to time. Dirty
propane lines, dusty environments, etc. will cause soot buildup.
