THE OVEN SHUTS OFF RANDOMLY
After lighting your oven and during its operation, your oven shuts off for no reason. Below are a few
reasons for this, similar to having issues with the pilot staying lit. Problems around the oven pilot lighting
or the oven staying lit are related, assuming you can get the pilot to light, to begin with.
1. The thermocouple tip is dirty (sooted up)
a. Reason – the tip of the thermocouple can become dirty due to various reasons. Soot will
insulate the thermocouple tip reducing millivolt transfer to the oven electromagnet. The
magnet then drops out, shutting the gas flow to the oven and the pilot.
b. Suggested solution take emery cloth, toothbrush, fine sandpaper, or other item and
clean off the soot on the thermocouple tip. You can access the thermocouple tip by
opening the broiler drawer, looking in the middle back of the range. It's a long reach-in.
Once clean, try lighting the pilot again. Make sure you hold the oven knob in for at least
a count of 10. Then run your oven and test its operation
c. Resolve if the above worked –keep the thermocouple tip clean from time to time. Dirty
propane lines, dusty environments, etc. will cause soot buildup.

If suggestion #1 has failed, then there is the possibility of the oven pilot orifice becoming clogged. During
operation, debris can float around within the pilot orifice. Debris can become lodged at the entrance to
the pilot orifice, the pilot flame will shut off. There is not enough direct heat on the thermocouple to
satisfy the oven valve electromagnet. The oven then shuts down.
2. The pilot orifice is dirty or clogged
a. Reason – Debris from with the propane line or scale, in general, can clog the pilot orifice.
b. Suggested solution remove the pilot orifice and clean. This is not a straightforward
process but worth trying before replacing the thermocouple pilot assembly and, more
importantly, the oven thermostat.
c. Resolve be aware that you may need to clean this from time to time if your lines are old
or you have recently installed new appliances or new piping upstream of your range.

If solutions #1 and #2 did not work, we must assume the thermocouple has failed.
3. The thermocouple has failed
a. Reason Over time, or just due to the component failing, it no longer produces any or
enough millivoltage to hold the oven electromagnet in its open position.
b. Suggested solution – Replace the thermocouple assembly. The thermocouple is not
available on its own. It comes as an assembly with a new igniter, pilot tube and
thermocouple. Current part # UGP-DWWJ01325-1. Replacement instructions if required,
are available.
c. The next step if replacing the thermocouple did not work – replace the oven thermostat
valve – see details in step 4

If suggestions 1, 2, and 3 have failed, then the only thing left that can cause this issue is the oven
thermostat valve. Many times the electromagnet in the valve has failed. It's weak or corroded. The magnet
closes randomly and shuts the gas flow off to the oven burner. Corrosion can be caused by water in your
propane lines that have run through the oven thermostat. Unfortunately, the electromagnet is not
available as a separate item.
4. The oven thermostat has failed
a. Reason – A weak electromagnet or clogged ports inside the oven valve.
b. Suggested solution – Replace the oven thermostat. The thermostat is different for some
models – when calling for the part, make sure you have the correct model #, Eg. UGP-20G
vs UGP-30G etc. Replacement instructions, if required, are available.
c. No other solutions are available; contact Unique Appliances Service Department if the
problem persists. 1-877-427-2266
