The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of ﬁ ne engineering – always setting the benchmark because it is based on much more than

engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW Efﬁ cientDynamics. It includes the visionary Hydrogen engine, already used in a number of completely

emission-free BMW  Series saloons. Also going into production soon is the BMW ActiveHybrid – an intelligent, demand-oriented combination of

internal combustion engine and electric motor. And every BMW already includes a multi-award-winning BMW Efﬁ cientDynamics technology package

as standard that boosts dynamics even further while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO



emissions.

Optimum Shift Indicator

Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective

and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where

the Optimum Shift Indicator in conjunction

with -speed manual transmission comes in.

It shows the driver what gear to use in order to

save fuel.

Valvetronic

Petrol engines with Valvetronic have fully

variable valve lift control. This improves

the engine’s responsiveness and running

smoothness while also signiﬁ cantly reducing

fuel consumption.

Auto Start/Stop function

BMW four-cylinder engines with -speed

manual transmission automatically shut down

when the vehicle is stationary, for example at

a red light or in a jam, when the driver activates

the clutch and switches to neutral. The engine

restarts as soon as the clutch is activated

again. This innovation signiﬁ cantly reduces

fuel consumption especially in city trafﬁ c.

Brake Energy Regeneration

To supply a battery with electrical energy, the

generator (alternator) is permanently driven

using engine power, which demands additional

fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration

means the generator usually only generates

electricity when the driver takes his foot off the

accelerator or the brake – previously unused

kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode

into electrical energy before being fed into the

battery. In this way, electricity is generated

while coasting, without consuming fuel.

Some BMW Efﬁ cientDynamics features are dependent

on the car’s equipment and are not available for all model

variants. Your BMW partner will be happy to provide you

with information on all equipment details.

Disengageable

air conditioning compressor

If the air conditioning is not being used, the air

conditioning compressor in all diesel models is

uncoupled from the belt drive, which prevents

the usual loss of energy.

Common Rail Injection system

The third-generation electronically controlled

Common Rail Injection system generates

pressure of up to , bar. Diesel fuel can be

injected with greater precision and in exactly

calculated amounts. This lowers consumption

and emissions while at the same time enhancing

engine performance.

emissions of  g/km and signiﬁ cantly less.

But that’s just for starters. We’re carrying on

our research with BMW Efﬁ cientDynamics –

in the quest to bring you more driving pleasure

and less emissions.

 Fog lights, integrated in the front apron, for

improved safety in poor visibility. Option includes

heated exterior mirrors and windscreen washer

nozzles.

 BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line

includes the surrounds of the B-pillar, window

guide, window recess covers, mirror triangle

and mirror frame in Black, high-gloss.

 Xenon Headlights for high and low beam,

incl. daytime running lights, headlight

washing system, four light rings and taillights

with LED light rods, for significantly better

illumination of the road at night and in poor

weather or light conditions.

 Adaptive Headlights with variable light

distribution, incl. turning lights, only in

conjunction with Xenon Headlights, optimally

illuminate corners as soon as the driver turns

into them through electromechanical control

of the pivoting headlamps.

 Window recess covers in chrome

(for X xDrivei and X xDrived).

 High-beam assistant helps the driver at

night by automatically switching between high

and low beam according to oncoming traffic,

vehicles driving in front and when road lighting

is sufficient.

 Lights package includes vicinity lights in the

door handles, which illuminate the area outside

the doors for  seconds when the doors are

unlocked to ensure safe access in the dark.

Other features include reading lights at the

front and rear, footwell illumination at the front,

vanity mirror lights for driver and passenger, and

ambient light.

 Rain sensor, incl. automatic driving lights:

Once activated, the rain sensor automatically

turns on the windscreen wipers according to the

intensity of the rain and independently controls

the wiper interval. The integrated automatic

driving lights automatically switch to low beam

at dusk or when entering tunnels.

 Roof railing Aluminium satinated: For an

individual look, the roof rails are also available in

a flat-profile version in Aluminium satinated

(only in conjunction with X Line).

 Exterior mirrors, in body colour, both

electrically adjustable and aspheric on the

driver’s side. The mirrors can also be heated.

 Interior and exterior mirrors with automatic

anti-glare function. When a defined incidence

of light is registered from following vehicles, the

mirrors automatically adjust to the anti-glare

position.

 Roof railing, black: Harmoniously matched

to the car’s design, this system forms the basis

of a multifunctional BMW roof support for

effortless and safe transportation of luggage,

bicycles, surfboards etc.

 Panorama glass roof with large opening

and viewing area and wind deﬂ ector. The

front half of the glass can be electrically

raised by touch control and also has a sliding

function, electric sliding rooﬂ iner (sun

protection) as well as a comfort open/close

function with trap release.

 BMW Individual roofliner Anthracite. In

addition, the sunblinds and roof grab handles

are in Black.

 Tow ba r with removable ball head (the ball

head can be conveniently stowed away under

the luggage compartment floor). Depending

on the model, the trailer load can be up to

, kg.

 Dynamic Braking Lights help vehicles

following behind to see how hard you are applying

the brakes. During normal braking, the brake

lights cover a large area. Only during emergency

braking do the brake lights begin to ﬂ ash. This

allows following trafﬁ c to immediately distinguish

between light braking and full braking – for even

greater driving safety.

 X Line includes exhaust tailpipes with chrome

frame, selected features in Aluminium satinated

– front bumper, incl. grille slats in the air inlet,

rear bumper and side sills.

allows for very fast, precise gearshifts and

maximum dynamic performance (shift paddles

for the sports leather steering wheel are optional

on the X xDrivei and X xDrived).

 Cruise control with braking function

stores and maintains the desired speed, from

approx.  km/h (controlled by the left-hand

steering column stalk).

 -speed manual transmission allows a

very sporty driving style. It is very smooth,

with perfect ratios and precise, short-throw

gearshifts. The closely spaced gear ratios and

the addition of a sixth gear enable the driver to

make even more individual use of the engine’s

characteristics.

 Auto Start/Stop Display signals on the Info

Display when the engine has been switched off

by the Auto Start/Stop function (for instance, at

traffic lights or in a jam). The display is turned

off when the engine is re-started automatically

(for four-cylinder models in conjunction with

-speed manual transmission).

 Navigation system Business, incl. CD

drive, iDrive Controller with direct menu control

buttons, functional bookmarks, integrated

storage facility for navigation data and high-

resolution .-inch display.

 Navigation system Professional*, incl.

 BMW Online* allows access to internet-based

services such as e-mail, tailor-made portals for

news, stock market ﬁ gures and weather reports,

as well as information from the Google Maps

database.

 On-board computer provides information

about average speed, average and current fuel

consumption, range and outside temperature.

 Optimum Shift Indicator lets you know

when it is more economical to drive in another

gear. It indicates when to shift up or down and

adapts these recommendations to your driving

style (for models with -speed manual

transmission).

 Rear view camera clearly shows the area

behind the vehicle on the Control Display.

Interactive guidelines indicate, for example, if a

parking space is large enough for the vehicle. If

the BMW has a tow bar, the image area is

enlarged. The rear view camera is automatically

activated when reverse gear is engaged (in

conjunction with a navigation system).

 Park Distance Control, front and rear,

facilitates parking and manoeuvring in confined

spaces, giving an acoustic signal to indicate the

distance between your car and an obstacle. In

conjunction with an optionally available

navigation system, the distance is also shown

visually in the Control Display.

 AUX-IN connection, incl. -V socket for

an external audio source such as an MP player.

 USB/audio interface for connection of a

USB stick or MP player. Stored tracks are

on the multifunction steering wheel, radio

BMW Professional or the iDrive Controller.

The USB/audio interface can be extended to

 Air conditioning, with microfilter, for a

comfortable interior climate any time of year.

 Automatic air conditioning (shown here),

with Automatic Air Recirculation, microfilter,

fogging and solar sensors, quickly creates the

desired climate and maintains the selected

temperature. Separate temperature control for

left and right sides.

 CD-changer for six CDs (available in

conjunction with a navigation system or the

radio BMW Professional).

 Preparation for mobile phone with

Bluetooth interface, incl. hands-free system,

connection for recharging and external aerial,

front ambient lighting. A separately available

snap-in adapter enables connection of a

Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone, which can

also be operated via iDrive (in conjunction with

navigation system).

 harman/kardon Surround Sound System

with powerful amplifier, equalizer, centre

speaker and  loudspeakers for superb sound.

Surround sound function enables simulation of

various acoustic environments.

 HiFi loudspeaker system with eight

loudspeakers for brilliant sound.

 DVD system in the rear



includes a monitor

with -inch colour display integrated into the

centre armrest. The DVD system plays video

DVDs and audio CDs (incl. MP format) and can

also be used to display JPEG images. When the

monitor is not in use it pivots  degrees and

folds down. It also comes with an AV input.

Infrared headphones available from BMW as an

option.



additional fastening points on the upper part.

 Personal Profile: This stores your personal

preferences depending on equipment for

settings such as the temperature and air

distribution of the automatic air conditioning,

the position of the driver’s seat and exterior

mirrors, and the volume and sound of the radio.

Settings are then activated when you unlock

the central locking.

 Sports seats for driver and front passenger, with higher seat cheeks and electric seat

backrest width adjustment for optimum lateral support. Manual adjustment of fore-and-aft

position, seat height, backrest angle, seat angle and thigh support.

falling into the passenger compartment and

allowing the luggage compartment to be

loaded safely up to the roof. When not

required, it can be folded up into a bag and

stowed away in the luggage compartment

ﬂ oor.

 Ski and snowboard bag



allows up to four

pairs of skis or two snowboards to be

transported cleanly and safely when up to four

people are inside the car. The ski bag is easy to

detach and can also be used outside the car.

When not required, it can be stored – without

taking up much space – in the bag supplied.

 Cup holder, located in the centre console

and within easy reach.

 Bottle holders: safely accommodating bottles of various sizes and

located in each of the front and rear doors.

 Tensioning straps in the front door pockets provide space for

folding centre armrest, in the centre console

trim in the rear and on the right of the luggage
