About This Guide
Audience
This guide is addressed to people in charge of the setup of the system and its daily
operations.
Note: The upgrading procedures described in this guide (chapter 6) must be performed by
people trained to perform service tasks on the system and must be executed carefully
following the given instructions. The system supplier will not be liable for any problems
deriving from incorrect handling or wrong installation of the upgradings.
Overview of the Contents
Notes:
1. Unless otherwise specified, the information provided in this guide is common to
the system models ESCALA T430 and T450.
2. Being this guide conceived for the setup of several system models and their
never-stopping evolution, it does not include model-specific information, if this is
not relevant to the described procedures. All model-specific characteristics, like
CPU type and speed, model configuration and performances are available on our
internet site at www.bull.com, within the UNIX product description pages.
• Chapter 1, Knowing the System
, guides to preparing the most suitable area to setup
the system and presents system features.
• Chapter 2, System Setup Procedure
, includes any procedures needed to setup the
system and start it for the first time.
• Chapter 3, Using Devices and Tools
, explains how to use system devices and tools
such as CD-ROM, tapes and mouse.
• Chapter 4, Maintaining the System
, describes system starting and stopping procedures
and use of configuration variables; it also includes a simple problem solving table.
• Chapter 5, Configuring the System
, describes the configuration rules of the system, in
terms of disk and media devices, controllers, CPU’s and memory.
• Chapter 6, Expanding the System Configuration
, describes how to upgrade the
system in terms of devices, controllers, CPU’s and memory.
• Appendix A, System Specifications
, summarizes the system specifications and
standards.
• Appendix B, System Devices Location Map
, provides and correlates the different
identifications of the system devices (Open Firmware nodes, physical and logical location
codes).
Related Publications
• Maintenance Guide (86 A1 46PX), provides the description of the system hardware
components and the instructions for their installation and/or replacement. A section is
dedicated to the SCSI cables description and connection. The spare part list is also
included. Moreover, this guide provides information about the system initialization
process, system firmware and configuration variables, and the system features in terms
of reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS). It includes also information about the
maintenance tools provided with the system for diagnostic purposes, such as online and
offline tests, system status indicators (tracing and error codes), remote maintenance.
This guide is addressed to people trained to perform service tasks on the system.
• AIX 4.3 Installation Guide (86 A2 43GX), provides detailed instructions for the AIX
installation.
