THE SAMSUNG SGH-E710 QUICK START GUIDE
Getting started...
Before you can do any of this, first you need to make sure your handset is
prepared.
1. Insert your SIM card:
Pull the battery lock upwards, and remove the battery. Slide your Vodafone
SIM card (with the gold contacts facing downwards) into its holder, making
sure that the cut-out corner is aligned correctly. Press the battery down again
until it clicks into place.
2. Charge the battery:
Before using your handset for the first time, it's important to charge the
battery for at least 4 hours.
3. Turn it on:
Open the handset, then press and hold the key. (You do the same to
turn it off again.)
In just a few minutes this Quick Start Guide will show you how to use many
of the main features of your new SGH-E710.
We'll show you how easy it is to take pictures and video clips with its built-in
camera, send photos in MMS messages, and connect to Vodafone live! and
the mobile internet. You'll also be able to download new polyphonic
ringtones, games and background wallpapers – as well as send a picture as
an actual postcard...
For a full explanation of all your handset's functions and applications, please
read the User Manual.

1. USING THE HANDSET
Keys & Navigation
Left Soft key: Selects whatever command or icon is in the bottom
left of the screen (usually Select).
In Standby screen: Takes you to Contacts.
Right Soft key: Selects whatever command or icon is in the
bottom right of the screen (usually Back).
In Standby screen: Takes you to Vodafone live!.
Centre key: Use to Select an item, Confirm, or Take a picture.
In Standby screen: Takes you to the main Menu.
Navigation key: Use to move around icons and menu lists.
In Standby screen: goes to Messages, goes to Camera,
goes to Calendar view, and goes to Contacts.
Answer key: Makes or answers a call.
In Standby screen: Brings up Call Log.
End key: Takes you back to Standby screen.
When ringing: Ends a call.
Hold: Turns handset on and off.
Clear key: For deleting text or numbers.
Volume keys: Adjusts call volume during a call.
In menus: Moves up and down menus.
Camera key: Takes you to Camera mode (in Standby screen).
In Camera mode: Captures a photo.
Your SGH-E710 has many new features and services, but using them is
simple thanks to the intuitive menu system, context-sensitive 'soft' keys and
the 5-way central navigation joystick.

2. THE CAMERA
Take and send a photo:
1. Go to Camera mode:
Press the navigation key up ( ) in Idle mode – this takes you to the
Camera menu. Then highlight Take photos, and press to select it.
(You can also press the Camera key to take you directly to Camera mode).
2. Compose your picture:
Pressing the Volume keys on the side of the handset zooms in and out of
the scene. Pressing or controls brightness. Pressing [Right soft
key] turns on the camera light.
Tip: Pressing the Left soft key brings up an Options menu, where you can
change Settings, add Frames or even shoot multiple pictures (Multi-shot).
3. Take the photo:
Pressing will capture the picture (or press the Camera key). Press
[Cancel] to try again, or press again to Save it (it's saved in Menu/
Camera/My Stuff/My photos). Now press [Options]. To send it as a Picture
Message, choose Send. (See the next page for more on MMS.)
With the built-in zoom camera you can now capture images and even video
clips (see section 8 for video). Photos can also be sent to other people as
part of an MMS (Picture Messaging) message.

3. MMS (PICTURE MESSAGING)
Create a new MMS:
1. Open a new MMS:
Select Messages in the main Menu. Select Picture messages, and then
Create message.
2. Enter a Subject:
Use the keypad to write the Subject (title) of your message. Press [Ok].
Text tips: Press the key to cycle between Multi-tap, Numeric, Symbol
and T9 modes.
The key adds a Space, the key toggles beween Upper and lower
case, and the key adds punctuation. Pressing the key cycles
through word and punctuation options in T9 (predictive text) mode.
3. Add the text:
Press [Options] to bring up the Options menu, then select Add text. Enter
your message, then press [Ok].
4. Add a photo:
Now press [Options], and select Add my photo. Choose My photos to add
a saved picture, or Take photos to take a new one with the camera.
Page Tip: If you want to send more than one photo, you must add another
'page' to your MMS. In the Message screen use the navigation key to move
the highlight from Add here to Page1/... and select [Options]/Add page.
You can now add more pictures, text or sounds.
Life is more than just text. With MMS (Picture Messaging) you can now send
pictures and sounds as well! It works much like an email message, with
picture and sound attachments. Your handset is already enabled to send
and receive MMS, but if you have any problems call your local Vodafone
customer services.

Send your MMS:
5. Add a sound recording:
Select Add sound in the Options menu. Select Record, and then press
to start recording. Press again to stop. Select Save, and then
press [Ok] to add it to your MMS. (You'll see a small speaker logo indicating
that a sound has been added.)
6. Preview your MMS:
Select [Options]/Preview. You'll see (and hear) what the person who gets
your MMS will. To change any part of your MMS, highlight it with the
navigation key, then press [Options]/Delete (or Edit).
1. Select the Send menu:
In the Options menu, select Send and then To(Ø):.
2. To: options:
You can now choose who you send your message to:
Phone number: Enter a mobile number (if the receiving handset isn't
Picture Message compatible, they'll be sent a web address to view your
message on).
E-Mail: Enter an e-mail address (press the key three times to get the @
key).
Contacts: Choose a mobile number or email address from your Contacts
phonebook.
3. Send your MMS:
Select Send message.
Send Tips: Try sending it to yourself, to see how it works! If you want to
send to more than one person, select Cc(Ø): or Bcc(Ø): in the Picture
msg. send menu.

1. Use the Vodafone live! shortcut:
Simply press the [ ] soft key (in Standby mode) to connect you to the
Vodafone live! main menu. To exit, press and hold the key.
Browsing tips: It works very like an ordinary web browser. Use the
navigation keys to highlight the item you want to select, then press to
open that page. Press [Back] to go back a page. Press [Options] for the
Browser Option menu.
2. Or link directly to Vodafone live! services:
In the main Menu, go to Vodafone live!, then select the Favourites
section, and choose your service:
Games: Online fun and games to download...
Ringtones: Download music, sounds and ringtones.
Pictures: Download images, animations and background wallpaper.
Search: Find what you need in Vodafone live!
Find & Seek: Get the local information you need, wherever you are.
News: Get the latest news reports and weather forecasts...
Sport: News, results and latest scores (with pictures).
[Also Entertainment, Travel, Love & Life and Finance...]
Tip: Vodafone live! is growing and changing all the time, so these options
may vary. Keep checking it out to see what's new.
Vodafone live! is a mobile internet portal which is your gateway to a new world
of information, downloads, games, music and services. Your SGH-E710 uses
GPRS, a fast way of getting mobile information. Also, the connection can be
'always on' – which means no wait for dialling up. You only pay for data you
send or get, not how long you're connected.

5. DOWNLOADS
Download More:
1. Download a new ringtone:
Your SGH-E710 uses polyphonic ringtones for an amazingly vibrant and life-
like sound. Go to Menu/Vodafone live/My stuff/Sounds and choose
Download more. This will take you directly to the ringtone download section
of Vodafone live!. Choose the ringtone you'd like and follow the instructions
to download it.
Tip: To activate your ringtone, go to Vodafone live/My stuff/Sounds, then
choose Saved sounds. Highlight your downloaded ringtone and select Set as
ring signal from the [Options] menu.
2. Download new background wallpaper:
To choose a new background image for your phone, go to Vodafone
live/My stuff/Images and choose Download more. This will take you
directly to the wallpaper download section of Vodafone live!. Choose the
image you'd like and follow the instructions to download it.
Then go to Vodafone live/My stuff/Images/Saved images, select your
downloaded image and choose Set as wallpaper from the [Options] menu.
3. Download new games:
To add more high quality games to your handset, select Vodafone live/My
stuff/Games & more/Download more. Choose a game to download, and
you'll find it in Vodafone live/My stuff/Games & more/Saved
application (there are already some great games there already).
Personalise your new handset by downloading new ringtones, images and
background wallpaper from Vodafone live!. All downloads are saved in Menu/
Vodafone live/My stuff/. You can download from the Vodafone live! portal or
the Favourites menu (see previous page), or use the download menus:

6. OTHER FUNCTIONS
1. Silent mode:
To go into Silent mode, press and hold the key in the Idle screen (you'll
see an icon at the top of the screen). Do the same to restore your ring
volume.
2. Flashlight mode:
With the handset closed, press and hold either end of the side Volume
keys. This activates the Camera light – you can now use the handset as a
torch! Press and hold again to cancel.
3. Closed handset Camera mode:
Also with the handset closed, press and hold the side Camera key until you
hear a beep. This activates the Camera – you can see the Camera view on
the external display. Press the Camera key again to take a picture (it is
automatically saved in My Photos).
4. Video clips:
Press (in Idle mode) to to the main Menu and select the Camera icon,
then Video, then Record. You can now use the screen as a viewfinder. Press
[Left soft key] to start recording (up to 5 secs), and press [Cut!] to stop.
Press to Save your clip. Go to Menu/Camera/Video/Video clips to
view your clips.
