DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry bycordor
yank itto disconnectfrom receptacle. Keep cord
from heat, oiland sharp edges.
SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a viseto hold
work. It'ssaferthan usingyour hand and itfrees
bothhandsto operate tool.
DON'T OVERREACH. Keep properfooting and
balanceat all times. Do not useon a ladderor
unstablesupport.
MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep toolssharp
at alltimes, and clean for best and safest perfor-
mance. Followinstructionsfor lubricatingand
changingaccessories.
DISCONNECT TOOLS. When not in use, before
servicing,or when changingattachments,blades,
bits,cutters,etc., all toolsshouldbe disconnected
from powersupply.
REMOVE CHUCK KEY. Formhabitof checkingto
see thatchuckkey is removedfrom chuck before
turningtoolon.
AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING. Don'tcarry
plugged-intools withfinger on switch.Be sure

MAKE SURE YOUR EXTENSION CORD IS IN
GOOD CONDITION. When usingan extension
cord, besure to use one heavy enoughto carry the
currentyour productwilldraw. An undersizedcord
willcausea drop in line voltage resultingin lossof
powerand overheating.A wire gage size (A.W.G.)
of at least 16 is recommendedfor an extension
cord 100 feet or less in length.A cordexceeding
100 feet is not recommended. If in doubt,usethe
nextheaviergage. The smallerthe gage number,
the heavierthe cord.
OUTDOOR USE EXTENSION CORDS. When tool
isused outdoors,use onlyextensioncordssuitable
for useoutdoors.Outdoor approvedcordsare
marked withthe suffixW-A, for example - SJTW-A
or SJOW-A.
KEEP BITS CLEAN AND SHARP. Sharp bits
minimizestallingand kickback.
KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM DRILLING AREA.
Keep handsaway from bits. Do not reach
underneathworkwhile bit is rotating.Do not
attemptto remove materialwhile bit isrotating.
INSPECT TOOL CORDS PERIODICALLY and if
damaged, have repairedat yournearest Sears
Repair Center. Stay constantlyaware ofcord
location.
B INSPECT EXTENSION CORDS PERIODICALLY
and replace ifdamaged.
KEEP HANDLES DRY, CLEAN, AND FREE
FROM OIL AND GREASE. Alwaysuse a clean
clothwhen cleaning. Never usebrake fluids,
gasoline, petroleum-basedproductsor anystrong
solventstoclean your tool.
STAY ALERT. Watch what you are doingand use
common sense. Do notoperate toolwhen youare
tired. Do notrush.
CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Beforefurtheruse of
the tool,a guard or other partthatis damaged
shouldbe carefullycheckedto determinethatit will
operate propedyand performitsintendedfunction.
Check for alignmentof movingpads, bindingof
moving parts,breakage ofparts, mounting,and
any other conditionsthat mayaffect itsoperation.
A guard or other partthat is damaged shouldbe
properly repairedor replaced byan authorized
service center unlessindicatedelsewhereinthis
instructionmanual.
DO NOT USE TOOL IF SWITCH DOES NOT
TURN IT ON AND OFF. Have defectiveswitches
replaced by an authorizedservice center.
DRILLING INTO ELECTRICAL WIRING IN
WALLS CAN CAUSE DRILL BIT AND CHUCK
TO BECOME ELECTRICALLY LIVE. Do nottouch
the chuck or metal housingwhen drillingintoa
wall; grasponly theinsulatedhandle(s)provided
on thetool.
INSPECT FOR and removeall nailsfrom lumber
beforedrilling.
DRUGS, ALCOHOL, MEDICATION. Do not
operatetool whileunder theinfluenceof drugs,
alcohol, or any medication.
WHEN SERVICING USE ONLY IDENTICAL
REPLACEMENT PARTS.
POLARIZED PLUGS. To reducethe riskof electric
shock,this toolhas a polarized plug (one blade is
widerthan the other). Thisplugwillfitin a
polarizedoutletonlyone way. Ifthe plug does not
fitfully inthe outlet, reversethe plug.ifitstilldoes
notfit, contact a qualifiedelectricianto installthe
properoutlet. Do not changethe plugin any way.

KNOW YOUR ELECTRIC DRILL
Beforeattemptingtouse yourdrill, familiarizeyourself
withall operatingfeatures and safety requirements.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
Your drillhas a precisionbuiltelectricmotor. It should
be connectedto a power supply that Is 120 volts,
60 Hz, AC only (normal household current). Do not
operatethis toolon directcurrent (DC). A substantial
voltagedropwillcause a lossof powerand the motor
willoverheat. If yourtooldoes notoperate when
pluggedintoan outlet, double-checkthe power
supply.

drilltomake you careless. Remember that a
careless fractionofa secondis sufficientto inflict
severe injury.

Your drillisequippedwith a "lock-on" feature, whichis
convenientwhen continuousdrillingfor emended
periodsoftime isrequired.To lock-on,depressthe
switchtrigger,pushin and hold the lock-onbutton
locatedon the side ofthe handle, then release switch
trigger. Release lock-onbuttonand yourdrillwill
continuerunning.
To release thelock,depressthe switchtriggerand
release.
If you havethe "lock-on" feature engaged during use
and yourdrillbecomesdisconnectedfrom power
supply,disengagethe "lock-on"feature immediately.

Your drillhas thefeature ofbeing reversible.The
direction ofchuckrotationiscontrolledbya lever
located above the switchtrigger.With yourdrillheld in
normal operatingposition,the rotationlever shouldbe
positionedtothe left ofthe switchfor drilling.The
directionof rotationisreversedwhen the lever isto
the rightofthe switch.
The design of the switch will not permit changing
the direction of rotation while the drill Is running.
Release the switch trigger and allow the drill to
stop before changing its direction.
Note: Your drill will not run unless the switch
lever Is pushed fully to the left or right.

storagearea locatedon the bottomportionof drill
handle.

Open or close the chuckjaws to a pointwhere the
openingisslightlylargerthan thedrillbityou
intendto use. Also, raise the front ofyourdrill
slightlyto keep the drillbits from failing out ofthe
chuckjaws.
Insertdrillbitintochuckthe full lengthofthejaws.
,_ WARNING: Do not insertdrillbitintochuck
jaws and tighten as shownin figure7. Thiscould
causedrillbit to be thrownfromyourdrill
resultingin possibleserious personalinjuryor
damage to yourchuck.
A WARNING: Yourdrillshouldnever be con-
nected topower supplywhen you are assem-
blingparts,makingadjustments,installingor
removingdrillbit,or when notin use. Discon-
nectingyourdrillwillpreventaccidentalstarting
thatcould cause seriousinjury.

Loosen chuck jaws using the chuck key
provided.
Do not use a wrenchto tighten or loosenthe
chuckjaws.
Remove drillbitfrom chuckjaws.
Remove chuck key and return itto storage area.

drillis inOFF positionbefore connectingit to

Chockthe directionof rotationleverfor correct
setting(forwardor reverse). See Figure3.
Secure the matedal to be drilled ina vise orwith
clampsto keep itfrom turningas the drillbit
rotates.
Plugyourdrillintopower supplysource.
Hold yourddllfirmly and place bitat pointto be
drilled.
Depress the switchtdggertostartyourddll.Do not
lockthe switch ON forjobswhere yourdrillmay
need to be stoppedsuddenly.
Move the drillbit intothe workpieceapplyingonly
enoughpressure to keepthe drillbit cutting.Do not
forceyour drillor applyside pressureto elongatea
hole. Let yourddll and drillbit do thework. See
Figure 8.
_ WARNING: Be preparedfor bindingor bit
breakthrough.When thesesituationsoccur, ddll
hasa tendencyto graband kickoppositeto the
directionof rotationand couldcause lossof
controlwhen breakingthroughmatedal.This loss
of controlcan resultin possibleseriousinjury.
When ddninghard, smoothsurfacesusea center
punch to markthe desired holelocation.This will
preventthe drillbitfrom slippingoffcenteras the hole
isstarted.
When ddllingmetals, usea lightoilon the ddll bitto
keep itfrom overheating.The oilwillprolongthe lifeof
the bitand increasethe ddllingaction.
Ifthe bitjams in the workpioceor ifyourddll stalls,
stop the toolimmediately.Remove the bitfromthe
workpiece and determinethe reasonforjamming.
Avoid runningyour drillat a low speedfor extended
periodsof time. Runningat lowspeed underconstant
usage may cause yourdrilltobecomeoverheated. If
this occurs,coolyour drillby runningit withouta load
at fullspeed.

The chuck mustbe removedin order to usesome
accessories,To remove:
Unplugyour drill,
A WARNING: Failureto unplugyour drillcould
resultin accidentalstartingcausingserious
injury.
Insert a 5/16 inch or larger hex key wrench into
the chuck of your drilland tighten the chuckjaws
securely. Tap the hex key wrench sharply with a
mallet in a counterclockwisedirection.
This willloosen the chuckon the spindle.
It can now be unscrewed by hand. See Figure9.
Remove hex key wrench from chuckjaws,
TO RETIGHTEN A LOOSE CHUCK
The chuckmay at timesbecome looseon thespindle
and develop a wobble.
To tighten,follow these steps:
Unplugyourdrill.
A WARNING: Failure to unplug your drill could
result in accidental starting causing serious
injury.
Insert hex key wrench into chuck and tighten
chuck jaws securely. Tap hex key wrench
sharply with a mallet in a clockwise direction.
This will tighten the chuck on spindle.
Remove hex key wrench from chuck jaws.

GENERAL
Only the parts shownon parts list, page 11, are
intendedto be repairedor replacedbythe customer.
All otherparts representan importantpart ofthe
doubleinsulationsystem and shouldbe servicedonly
by a qualifiedSears service technician.
Avoidusingsolventswhen cleaningplasticparts.
Most plasticsare susceptibleto damage from various
typesofcommercial solventsand may bedamaged
bytheir use. Use clean clothsto removedirt, carbon
dust,etc.
A WARNING: Do notat anytime let brake fluids,
gasoline, petroleum-basedproducts,penetrating
oils, etc. come incontact withplasticparts.They
contain chemicalsthat can damage, weaken, or
destroyplastic.
It has been foundthat electrictoolsare subjectto
accelerated wear and possibleprematurefailure when
theyare used on fiberglass boats,sportscare, wall-
board,spacklingcompounds,or plaster.The chips
and grindingsfrom these materialsare highlyabrasive
to electrictoolparts such as bearings, brushes,
commutators,etc. Consequently,itis not recom-
mendedthatthistool be used for extended workon
any fiberglass material, wallboard,spacklingcom-
pounds,or plaster. Duringany useon these materials,
itis extremelyimportantthat the tooliscleaned
frequentlyby blowing withan air jet.

isdusty,also wear a dust mask.
LUBRICATION
All ofthe bearingsin this toolare lubricatedwitha
sufficientamountof highgrade lubricantfor the life of
the unitunder normaloperatingconditions.Therefore,
no further lubricationis required.
EXTENSION CORDS
The use ofany extension cordwillcause someloss of
power. To keep the lossto a minimumand toprevent
tooloverheating,use an extensioncordthatis heavy
enoughto carry thecurrentthe toolwilldraw.
A wire gage size (A.W.G,) of at least 16 is
recommendedfor an extensioncord100 feet or less
in length.When workingoutdoors,usean extension
cord that issuitable for outdooruse. The cord'sjacket
willbe marked WA.
WARNING: Check extensioncordsbeforeeach
usa. If damaged replace immediately.Never use
toolwith a damaged cordsincetouchingthedam-
aged area couldcauseelectricalshockresultingin
serious injury.
