Maintenance and cleaning position of

the re box door

During maintenance and cleaning the furnace

door can be prevented from closing itself by

pushing the latch at the top of the furnace

door inwards. Once the necessary work is

completed, the furnace door is unlocked by

opening it fully.

3. Safety Distances

Within a radius of 90 cm in front of and 40 cm

aroundthestove,ammable,combustible,orheat-

sensitive materials (e.g. furniture, wood or plastic

panelling, curtains, etc.) are not allowed to be loca-

tedintheheatradiatingareaofthereboxwindow

(g.1).

*Outside of the radiation area, it is necessary to

maintainadistanceof6cmbetweentheupperue

pipeconnectorandanyammablematerial,anda

distanceof3cmbetweenthebackuepipecon-

nectorandanyammablematerial(g.1).

WARNING!

Flammable ooring materials (e.g., wood,

laminate, carpeting,) must be protected

with a oorplate made of non-combustible

material (e.g., tiles, safety glass, slate, or

sheet steel).

The oorplate must protrude 50 cm over

the side of the rebox opening. It must

overhang the ground plot of the oven by 10

cm at the front and 17 cm at the back (g.

2).

4. Connection of Multiple Devices in

Direct Vent Operation

WhentheCartagoisoperatedasadirectventmo-

del, more than one device can be connected to the

chimney under the following conditions:

CAUTION!

All connected replace stoves must be in

the same building unit or in the same ef-

fective area of the ventilation system.

The inlets for the combustion air ducts are

located in areas of equal pressure (same

pressure ratios), wind-induced pressure

uctuations have to be avoided.

5. Fuel Load Sizes and Thermal Output

The thermal output depends on the amount of fuel

youputinthestove.Whenaddingmorefuel,please

do not exceed the maximum fuel load size of 2.2 kg.

Exceeding the maximum fuel load size leads to a

danger of overheating, which can result in damage

tothestoveandtheriskofastovere.

NOTE!

To attain a thermal output of approx. 7kW,

burn wood logs that weigh 1.7 kg and are

no longer than 25 cm in length for about

45 min.

The Cartago is intended for intermittent operation,

please only apply one fuel layer at a time.

6 . Initial Operation

NOTE!

During shipment, condensation moisture

can accumulate in the stove’s interior,

which may possibly lead to the appearance

of condensation or water on the stove or

ue pipes. Please dry off these damp areas

immediately.

The surface of your stove was treated in a sandbla-

sting machine before applying the colour coating.

Despite careful and thorough inspection, there may

still be some residual material in the stove body,

which can fall out when your stove is being instal-

led.

NOTE!

To prevent any damage, please immediate-

ly vacuum up these small steel pellets with

a vacuum cleaner.

Thersttimeastoveisoperated,theheatdevelop-

ment causes the emission of volatile components

from the coating, sealing strips and lubricants, and

smoke and odours can occur.

At a higher combustion temperature, this one-time

process can take between 4 to 5 hours.

To achieve this higher combustion temperature,

pleaseincreasethefuelquantity recommendedin

Section 8, „Adding Fuel/ Heating with Nominal Ther-

mal Output“, by approximately 50%.

CAUTION!

To prevent adverse effects on health, no-

body should stay in the room(s) during

this process unless absolutely necessary.

Make sure the room is well-ventilated and

open the windows and outside doors. If

needed, use a fan for faster air circulation.

If the maximum temperature is not reached during

therstheatingoperation,youmaynoticeanodour

for a short period of time the next time the stove is

used as well.

7. Lighting the Fire

Theringupphaseshouldbeasshortaspossible,

since higher emissions can occur during this phase.

The slider settings described in Table 1 are recom-

mendations that were determined under confor-

mance testing conditions, in compliance with the

relevant standard. Depending on the weather con-

ditions and the draught capability of your chimney,

accordingly adjust the slider positions for your Car-

tago to the local conditions.

NOTE!

When lighting and adding fuel to the furn-

ace, regulate the secondary air using the

air slider. The air slider can be put in a he-

ating position which speeds up the ignition

process. In the heating position, the prima-

ry air supply is increased to speed up the

start phase. As soon as the fuel is com-

pletely ignited, the heating phase should

be stopped (push in the air slider until the

red marker is no longer visible.).

NOTE!

The Cartago may only be operated when

the re box door is closed; the re box door

may only be opened to add fuel.

WARNING!

Never use spirits, petrol, or other amma-

ble uids to light the stove.

ames from the previous burning off phase have

just gone out.

CAUTION!

If the layer of embers is completely co-

vered by very thick logs, the wood cannot

ignite properly and there is a possibility of

deagration.

CAUTION!

The door handle can become hot duri-

ng operation. When adding more wood,

protect your hands with the oven gloves

included.

9. Heating at Low Thermal Output

(during Transitional Seasons)

You can vary the thermal output of your Cartago by

adjustingthequantityoffuelused.

NOTE!

Do not attempt to slow down the combu-

stion by reducing the air supply. When

heating with wood, this can result in an

incomplete burning process and pose the

risk of an explosive like combustion of the

accumulated wood gases (deagration).

10. Emptying the Ash Drawer

As a safety precaution, please make sure that you

onlydisposeofashesoncetheyarecold.Whilethe

ashcollectsduringthere,thelid(g.3/1)isloca-

ted under the ash drawer

(g.3/2).

The ash drawer contains the mineral components

of the wood (approx. 1%) as combustion residues.

Remove both the ash drawer and the lid located

underneath it. Make sure the ash does not pile up

allthewaytothebottomoftherebox.Slidethe

lid onto the ash drawer so that it is closed; this pre-

ventsashesfromyingaround,whichinturnme-

ansyourhomestaysclean(g.4).

Please ensure that, when inserting the ash drawer,

the ash drawer lid is positioned on the base of the

drawer with the side brackets facing down.

11. Cleaning the ceramic glass panel

Openthereboxdoorandsecureitagainstacci-

dental closing (see point 2). To clean use the inclu-

ded protective glove with an extra long shaft. This

protects you and your clothing from getting dirty.

We recommend a proven and environmentally

friendly cleaning method:

Ball some up paper towels or newspaper, moisten

the ball, dip it into the cold wood ash, rub the panel

with it and then wipe the glass with a clean, dry ball

of paper.

NOTE!

Only use wood ash from split logs for this

cleaning process. Wood briquettes can

contain additives, which may scratch the

surface of the ceramic glass.

A common, retail glass detergent may also be used

forcleaning.Whencleaningthesealandsteelsur-

faces we recommend that you spray the glass deter-

gent on a cloth and not directly on the pane.

12. Technical Data

The Cartago,certied in compliance with DIN-EN 13240, can only be operated

whenthereboxisclosed.ConformswiththeDIBt(DeutschenInstitutfürBau-

technik/German Institute for Building Technology) approval criteria for direct vent

replaces for solid fuels. Multiple connections to the chimney are possible, see

point 4. “Connection of Multiple Devices in Direct Vent Operation”.
