The Lely Hibiscus Rake 1-1
1 THE LELY HIBISCUS RAKE
1.1 The Lely Hibiscus 655 SD
Only use the rake for its intended purpose!
The Lely Hibiscus 655 SD is a pull-type, twin-rotor cam rake for side
delivery. The rake is equipped with 2 rotors with 11 tine arms, each
equipped with 4 double tines.
The tines provide a clean sweep and move the grass to the left side in an
airy swath.
The rotors of the Lely Hibiscus 655 SD rake are fitted to the carriage by
means of a 3-D system, allowing them to follow ground contours
independently of the carriage.
The 4-wheel assembly ensures excellent raking when working in
undulating fields as well.
The transport wheels of the machine are fitted with wheel steering as
standard, which ensures that the machine follows the tractor in the same
tracks.
1.2 Intended Use
The Lely Hibiscus 655 SD is designed to be used as a rake pulled and
powered by a tractor.
The rake has been built exclusively for raking grass, hay and straw lying
on the ground of an agricultural field (= proper use). Usage going
beyond that does not constitute proper use. The manufacturer is not
liable for damage resulting from improper use; the operator only bears
the risk.
Intended uses also implies that the instructions and rules prescribed by
the manufacturer are observed.
1.3 Foreseeable Misuse
The rake must not be operated when stationary or outside an
agricultural field.
The rake must not be used for raking organic waste or hard materials
such as stones.

SAFETY 2-1
2 SAFETY
This chapter contains safety instructions you must obey when you use or
do maintenance on your Lely Hibiscus. It also explains the safety decals on
the Lely Hibiscus.
2.1 Signal Icons
Note the use of the signal words DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION with
the safety messages. The signal word for each message uses the following
guidelines:
Danger: indicates an imminently hazardous
situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or
serious injury.
Warning: indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if
not avoided, could result in death or serious injury, and
includes hazards that are exposed when guards are removed.
Caution: indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not
avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury or product or
property damage.
Note: this shows extra information that may help the reader.
2.2 Safety Instructions
YOU are responsible for the SAFE operation and maintenance of your
machine. YOU must make sure that you and anyone else who is going to
operate, maintain or work in the vicinity of the machine knows all the
related SAFETY information in this manual.
YOU are the key to safety. Good safety practices protect you and the
people around you. Make these practices a working part of your safety
program. Make sure that EVERYONE who operates, maintains or works
near the machine obeys the safety precautions. Do not risk injury or
death by ignoring good safety practices.
Owners must train operators before they operate the machine. This
training must be repeated at least annually.
4.1064.8502.0 -
2-2 SAFETY
The operator must read, understand and obey all safety and
operating instructions in the manual.
A person who has not read and understood all safety and
operating instructions is not permitted to operate the machine.
Do not modify the equipment in any way. Unauthorized
modification may impair the function and/or safety and could
affect the life of the equipment and persons.
Only use approved spare parts and make sure that they are only
installed by authorized technicians.
2.2.1 Operating Safety
Use the Hibiscus only for the purpose for which it was designed,
namely raking grass, hay and straw.
Obey all warnings on the machine.
The Hibiscus must only be operated by trained persons.
Make sure all safety guards and protection devices are installed
and function correctly.
Keep people and objects away from moving parts.
Make sure to keep persons away from the hitch of the tractor.
Keep safe distance from people when operating the Hibiscus. This
is especially important when you work near or on areas that are
accessible to the public.
If a person comes near the Hibiscus, stop the tractor and disengage
the PTO.
Always use a tractor with a cabin.
Make sure the cabin of the tractor is closed during operation of the
Hibiscus to avoid injuries from flying objects and to reduce the
noise level. Exposure to high noise levels can cause hearing loss.
Make sure there are no objects in the field that could be thrown up
by the Hibiscus before you operate the Hibiscus.
Obey local legislation when you drive on a public road.
Use flashing lights or other safety signs, when necessary.
Do not stand on the Hibiscus.
Depressurise the hydraulic system before you connect or disconnect
hydraulic hoses.
Use protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses and ear protectors, if
necessary.
When connecting the hydraulic hoses and/or operating the
hydraulic systems of the Hibiscus, make sure that the headstock of
the Hibiscus is connected to the tractor. If the Hibiscus is not
connected to the tractor, the Hibiscus may turn over during
operating the hydraulic systems.
4.1064.8502.0 -
SAFETY 2-3
Always keep a minimum distance of 3 m (10 ft) between the
Hibiscus and electrical power lines, especially when moving the
Hibiscus to the working position or to the transport position.
2.2.2 Maintenance Safety
Before doing maintenance on the Hibiscus, always take the
machine out of operation (see page 6-10).
Use protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses and ear protectors, if
necessary.
Only use genuine LELY parts.
Do not work on the hydraulic system.
Clean or replace the safety decals regularly so that they can be read
at all times.
Examine hoses regularly for signs of leakage or damage. Fine jets
of hydraulic fluid can penetrate the skin. Never use your fingers or
face to check for leaks. If affected by hydraulic fluid seek medical
help immediately. Have any worn or damaged hoses replaced
immediately by a certified technician.
As a hydraulic cylinder is kept open by the accumulator pressure it
will be necessary to release this before removing the accumulator
or working on the hydraulic cylinder. Otherwise injury may occur.
This procedure must be done by a certified technician.
All hydraulic hoses must be replaced every 6 years by a certified
technician.
2.2.3 Public Road Transport Safety
Before / when driving on public roads:
Always connect the safety chains crosswise between the Hibiscus
and the tractor . Make sure the length of the safety chains is
adjusted to avoid that the headstock of the Hibiscus touches the
ground if the towing device breaks. Make sure the safety chains
can not touch the PTO shaft, especially when you make a turn with
the Hibiscus.
Remove loose objects that may fall of the Hibiscus, such as stones
or pieces of clay.
Make sure approved tyre types are installed on the Hibiscus. Use of
not approved tyre types can cause dangerous situations. Re-tighten
the transport wheels nuts after the prescribed working hours or
driven distance. Make sure the tyres have the correct pressure. Do
not over-inflate tyres.
Always keep a minimum distance of 3 m (10 ft) between the
Hibiscus and electrical power lines.
Mind the length, width and height of the Hibiscus-tractor
combination.
Make sure the plug of the lighting cable is connected to the tractor
socket and the lights operate correctly.
4.1064.8502.0 -
2-4 SAFETY
Make sure the markings and lights on the Hibiscus are not covered
with dirt.
If required by local legislation install the rear marking plate for
slow moving vehicles (SMV) on the Hibiscus.
If required by local legislation install the license plate on the
Hibiscus.
Keep safe distance from other traffic.
Respect the maximum transport speed (design speed) of the towed
Hibiscus.
Obey local legislation when you drive on a public road.
2.2.4 Explanation of the Safety Decals

to safely operate and maintain the machine.
Obey the instructions below to make sure that all the decals stay in the
correct position and condition.
Keep the safety decals clean and legible at all times. Clean the
safety decals with soap and water. Do not use mineral spirits,
abrasive cleaners or other similar agents that may damage the
safety decals.
Replace safety decals that are missing or that are illegible.
