(1) Attaching the Included Seals
The operation panel is marked with symbols rather than specific
terms to indicate the function of each key and indicator. The given
name in each language for each of these symbols is printed on the
key-indicator seals that are included with the fax. The explanations in
this Instruction Handbook will use the names printed on those seals
when referring to each key and indicator on the operation panel.
In addition, since it is possible to use letters which are specific to
each particular language as well as other characters for registering
destination names, special characters seals are included as well to
indicate the special letters and other characters available for each
language.
• The key-indicator seals indicate the given name in each language
for each of the symbols shown on the operation panel and should
be attached to a location on the fax that makes it easy for the user
to refer to. (The suggested location is on the DF as shown in the
illustration.)
• The special characters seals for each language are on the same
sheet as the key-indicator seals and the seal that corresponds to
the language in use in the message display should be attached to
the top of the upper cover plate, directly under one-touch key No.

Section 1 Basic Use of this Fax
Features and Functions of this Fax
The following contains explanations about features and functions
that should be understood when this machine is used as a facsimile.
(1) Switching from the Copy Operation
Mode to the Fax Operation Mode
This machine was fundamentally designed for use as a copy
machine and the default setting is the Copy Operation mode.
Therefore, if you want to send a fax to another party it is first
necessary to switch to the Fax Operation mode.
However, since the Automatic Fax Reception mode is the default
setting for receiving a fax, fax reception is possible and the
documents will be printed out automatically even when the machine
is in the Copy Operation mode.
3A180100A
3A1/FaxSystem(A)/MCE-Eng
/ 164
(2) Initial Mode
Check the message display to make sure that the operation panel is
in the initial mode for fax operation PRIOR to performing any
facsimile operation.
The initial mode refers to the operational status of the fax while it is
waiting for some operation to begin. The operation panel will return
to this initial mode and the accompanying default settings at the end
of each successful fax operation as well as when the Auto Clear
function engages.
When the machine is in the Copy Operation mode, the lamp in
the COPY key will be lit and a message distinctive to the Copy
Operation mode will appear in the message display.
To switch to the Fax Operation mode, simply press the FAX
key. Once the machine is in the Fax Operation mode, the lamp
in the FAX key will light and a message distinctive to the Fax
Operation mode will appear in the message display.
CAUTION
When Restricted Access is turned ON, it is necessary to
enter the registered management password in order to
access the various setting and registration procedures of
this fax. Even if a viable access code is entered and fax
operation is performed, the menus that correspond to the
various setting and registration procedures of this fax will
not be available. (Refer to “Restricted Access”, page 4-55.)
