Ensure the bed is unoccupied prior to fitment/removal of the accessory.
Ensure a risk assessment in line with your local health and safety policy is undertaken.
Never attempt to fit the extension when side rails are fitted‐ risk of side rails falling and creating
a crushing hazard. Always remove the side rails first.
If the bed is in its extended state and with the leg extension profiled an opening can be created
at the foot end of the bed; a patient risk assessment must be performed to assess if this poses a
potential hazard to the patient if so the leg section must be locked out prior to use.
The manufacturer recommends that the extension is only to be used for individuals who require
it due to their physical height requirements, it is not to be fitted to the bed as the default for all
occupants. A patient risk assessment must be performed to assess the need for the extension

8. SIDERAIL SAFETY NOTICE
Reha-bed recommends the use of Reha-bed siderails with Reha-bed beds.
The Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has highlighted potential areas of risk which are listed
below, together with their recommended actions.
RISK
ACTION
Entrapment and
asphyxiation
Beds fitted with
bed siderails pose
a potential risk of
death from
entrapment and
asphyxiation
All staff responsible for the purchase, selection for use, positioning and adjusting of bed
siderails should be aware of the potential risk of entrapment and asphyxiation when a bed is
occupied.
Care must be taken when positioning and adjusting bed siderails to ensure that any spaces
between the bed siderails, mattress or bed frame will not allow entrapment of the occupant’s
head or body. In addition, consideration should be given to the size and physiological
condition of the occupant and an assessment undertaken to ensure that the spacing between
the bars of the bed siderails is not wide enough to present a potential risk of entrapment and
asphyxiation.
All staff responsible need to be aware that increased vigilance is required when nursing
patients in beds fitted with bed siderails.
Bed siderail
incompatibility
All staff responsible for the purchase, selection for use, positioning and adjusting of bed
siderails should be aware of the potential risk of entrapment and asphyxiation when a bed is
occupied.
Bed siderails should be checked for compatibility with the beds they are being fitted to so
that only the correct type of bed siderails are used. If in doubt, contact your supplier.
Staff and carers need to ensure that procedures are in place at the time of fitting,
allowing bed siderails to be assessed in conjunction with the bed and the occupant to
determine if any risk of entrapment exists (consideration should be given to the
occupant’s physical size).
