Ascom openAccess® Philosophy

Openness is a spectrum. Having just ‘open data’ is not always sufﬁcient

for providing deep integration. Ascom is committed to Openness with a

truly open software platform strategy – branded under the name

openAccess® – that serves as a focal point for collaboration with our

partners and customers. Ascom military products are compatible with

other devices and other companies’ own systems as well as applications

developed by other parties.

Ascom openAccess® is a managed library of well-tested hardware and

software components for the realization of voice, data and video

communications. The platform has been engineered with many features

including the ﬂexibility to support future extensions in military operational

requirements. The openAccess® operating system is embedded in Ascom

openAccess Nodes product range. This economy of scope means more

efﬁciency in operations, planning, training and maintenance.

Principal Solution

Ascom’s primary tactical communications offering composes a palette

of IP access nodes that conform to NATO TACOMS Post 2000 architecture

requirements for Wide Area Sub-system, Local Area Sub-system and Mobile

Sub-systems. All Ascom openAccess® Nodes comply with military

environmental speciﬁcations as well as established industry and

governmental communication standards.

Versatile Product Portfolio

Ascom openAccess® Nodes can concurrently support multiple roles in

practical military communication scenarios. They enable transparent voice

and data communication between strategic, public and legacy networks

while interoperability and ahierarchical networking insures effective

communication at every level – from inter-trooper through the squad and

platoon up to the division and corps ‘Command & Control’.

Ascom openAccess® Nodes are dependable. They deliver the

performance essential in the combat arena and fulﬁll the conﬁguration

demanded by battleﬁeld units. Ascom tactical communications equipment

has been chosen by several European national defense forces. And, for many

years continue to provide mobile voice and data services. These military

operations have proven Ascom openAccess® Nodes interoperability under

management tools, based on widely supported standards for seamless

integration into existing systems. With dedicated tools for local control,

Inter-Operability and Legacy Integration

Ascom openAccess Nodes® meet Wide Area Subsystem (WAS) re-

quirements for Radio Access Points (RAP) and Inter-Operability Points (IOP)

towards strategic and other external networks. Moreover, they provide

backward compatibility to legacy military systems and support gateway

functions for Eurocom to VoIP, Eurocom over IP as well as IP streaming over

Eurocom.

Voice and Data Integration

Ascom openAccess® Node delivers secure IP-based voice, data, and

video communications as well as advanced tactical radio integration for HF

and VHF and data capabilities. Other advanced functionality includes IP-

unicast and bandwidth efﬁcient IP multicast routing over multiple

subnets.

Next Generation Wireless Readiness

At the heart of many emerging military wireless communications

systems are software deﬁnd Radio and Packet Radio technologies, including

commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies, such as WLAN, 3G and

WiMAX. Ascom openAccess® Node can easily integrate these.

Data Routing and Priority Functions

Quality of Service (QoS) based Trafﬁc Prioritization - Ascom openAc-

cess allows for QoS level routing based on criteria as source and destination

port.

Priority levels may be assigned to voice calls, depending on user role

and manual priority selection such as “emergency call.”

Mobility of Telephony Services

Mobility is an essential attribute. Existing links to users, terminals and

nodes may outdate and need to reestablish automatically as users or

vehicles move. Ascom provides call-route discovery and auto afﬁliation

algorithms that support user, terminal and node mobility in semi-mobile

meshed networks including low bandwidth tactical radio systems.
