Johnson & Allen JAD-2 Developer User manual

  • Hello, I've reviewed the Product Data document for Johnson and Allen's JAD-2 Developer and associated Penetrant Materials like JAP, JAP-WW and NEON-WW. This document describes how to use JAD-2 to reveal surface defects on various metal components. It also specifies the application methods and the lighting conditions required for examination. I'm ready to answer your questions about these products and their use.
  • What is JAD-2 used for?
    How is JAD-2 applied?
What is the development time for defects?
What light sources are used to examine indications after JAD-2 application?

Dye Penetrant Inspection Process
JAD - 2 is a white mobile liquid under white light. The product is used to develop visible red and fluorescent
penetrant products
Typical Properties
Form White Mobile Liquid – Acetone Carrier
Density 0.81
Flash Point < 0°C Highly Flammable (Quick Drying)
Method of Use
Spraying : - Aerosol application is recommended although bulk in a compressed air spray gun may be
considered for use on large components/areas. Brushing would only be applicable if covering large rough
areas as it is very hard not to produce brush marks.
JAD – 2 Developer is applied after penetrant removal. Usually it is supplied in aerosol form as this give the
best uniformed and light coating. Large defects will usually appear almost instantly. Smaller fine indications
may take up to 10 minutes development time. Examine under white light of 500 Lux or more for Red
Penetrants or 365nm nominal peak UV Light, giving a surface intensity of greater than 1000 microwatts per
cm² for Fluorescent Penetrants.
Always ensure there is adequate ventilation and read the COSHH info.
JAD - 2 can be used in conjunction with JAP, JAP-WW and NEON-WW Penetrant Materials
The Dye Penetrant System provides a high level of integrity when used on welded fabrications, pressure
vessels, structures, pipes, castings, forgings and many other non-ferrous and ferromagnetic components.
(Although ferromagnetic components are usually tested for surface breaking defects using the MPI Process)
Specification Compliance
JAD - 2 Complies with BS EN ISO 3452-2
