Thank you for purchasing your Electronic Crossword
Puzzle Solve
r. The product has been designed to assist you
to find solutions to both simple and cryptic clues in several
simple and convenient ways.
The unit has a comprehensive
database of over 140,000 words.
These have been
categorised into 250 subjects to help narrow down and
reduce the amount of words o
ffered to you. In order to
familiarise yourself with all the useful features & functions
please read these user instructions carefully before using
this product and keep them handy for future reference.
Included with the Electronic Crossword Solver is a handy
index and cross-reference guide for your use.

To move the cursor and delete the last letter typed
in the JUMBLE game.

Display Symbols
There is one “N” and one “S” symbol located on the right
hand side of the displa
y. These indicate which mode the
unit is searching unde
r. When the “S” symbol is shown this
indicates the unit is in ʻsubject
ʼ mode. When the “N”
symbol is shown this indicates the unit is in ʻnormalʼ mode.
During listing of possible answers, the right-most character
of the display may alternate/flash with an arrow or symbol.
The following explains what the di
fferent arrows and
symbols mean and what action you should take.
Right
Arrow [
] there are more characters to the right of
the displa
y. Press & hold the
key to scroll to the right.
Release to stop scrolling.
To step through the answer one
character at a time, press the
key repeatedly.
Left
Arrow [
] there are more characters to the left of
the display, when you have reviewed the end of an answer.
Press & hold the
key to scroll back to the left. Release to
stop scrolling.
To step back through the answer, one
character
at a time, press the
key repeatedly.
Horizontal
Arrows [
] there are more characters to the
left and right. Press either
key to scroll.
Down
Arrow [
] this is the first entry in a list. Press the
key to view the next entry in the list.
Up
Arrow [
] the displayed entry is the last in the list.

Press the key to view the previous entry in the list.
Vertical Arrows [
] there are more words above & below
in the list. Press either the
key to view the previous or
next entry in the list.
When in subject mode
Sub title [ ] there are related subjects to the current
subject. Press the (ENTER) key for the list.
On-Screen help
If you require help at any time, simply press the [HELP]
key. The Crossword Puzzle Solver will display a message to
help guide you through the function you are using.
Getting Started - Starting Procedure
Before you start using your Crossword Puzzle Solver,
please carefully remove the battery tab located at the rear of
the unit.
Then insert a blunt fine point (such as a paper clip)
into the small hole marked RESET.
NOTE: Please remove the plastic label covering the LCD
display to ensure you can see your entries properly.

Finding Solutions
Single word - Normal Mode
Press [ON/OFF] key to switch on the Crossword Puzzle
Solve
r. The screen asks you to enter the size of the solution
word.
Word size?
Using the number keys, type the number of letters in the
solution and press [ENTER]. For example, if the clue is
“Physical feeling (9)”.
The answer is 9 letters long, Type a
9 and press [ENTER].
The screen displays a series of 9 ʻ?ʼ.
?????????
If you know any of the letters of the solution, substitute the
ʻ?ʼ
for those letters. For example, you may know the first
letter is an “S”, the sixth letter is “T” and the nineth letter is
an “N”.
To substitute the ʻ?ʼ, press
keys to move the
cursor to the desired ʻ?ʼ, and type in the known letter(s). If
you enter a letter in the wrong place, move the cursor to the
mistake and type a ʻ?ʼ.

Now press [ENTER] to search the whole database for all 9-
letter words which contain “S” as the first lette
r, “T” as the

sixth letter and “N” as the nineth letter. The screen will
display the first matching word it can find.
SALVATION [ ]
[ ] will flash to indicate if there are more matching
words. Press
to view the next word. Continue this
process until you find the desired word you require.
Press
to scroll back up the list.
SENSATION [ ]
Press [CLR] to clear the screen ready for another search for
9-letter words o
r...

Press [CLR] again to if you wish to enter a new word size.
Word size?
Single word - Extended Search
In the example given above, if the list does not contain the
required answe
r, press the [ES] key to perform a single
word Extended Search.
This will search for your word
within the phrase and multiple-word entries in the database.

For example, you may be looking for the word “Sherlock”
which is not contained as a single word entry but is
contained within the entry of “Sherlock Homes and Dr
Watson”.
Note: Extended Search can be used after all types of
search (single word, phrases o
r hyphenated).
Multiple words - Normal Mode
The solution may contain more than one word, e.g. the clue
could be “Shakespeare play (4,4)”.
Press [CLR] twice to clear the screen ready for a search.
Word size?
Press [4] then [SPACE] then [4] and then [ENTER], display
will show:
????, ????
If you know any of the letters in the solution, substitute the
s with them. For example, you may know that the 1st
letter of the 1st word is an “K” and that the last letter of the
2nd word is an “R”. Press the
keys to move the cursor
to the desired ʻ?
ʼʼs, and type the known letter(s).

Press (ENTER) to search for matching phrases. The screen

displays the first matching phrase it can find.

[ ] may flash to indicate if there are more matching
phrases. Press
to view the next phrase until you find the
desired phrase containing your words. Press
to scroll
back up the list.
Press [CLR] to clear the screen ready for another search for
phrases of “4,4” words, or press [CLR] again to if you wish
to search for a di
fferent sized phrase.
Multiple Word - Extended Search
In the example given above you could use the Extended
Search mode to find multiple word answers within phrases
or when you are unable to find a multi-word answer using
standard search then you can try to find it using Extended
Search.
E.g. the clue is “Character in Bond Movie. (3,3)” (Answer
is Odd Job)
Press [CLR] twice to show -
Word size?
Press [3], [Space], [3] and [Enter] to show -

Enter any know letters, e.g.

Press the [ES] key and select Ext.Search to search the
whole database. The unit will give -
ODD JOB MAN
This is the only answer from the unit and the subject this
belongs to is ʻ
Trades, professions and occupationʼ. The
words “ODD JOB” will flash to prompt you that this was
your required match.
Hyphenated words
The solution may contain hyphenated words, for example
“co-pilot”.
Follow the procedure for finding phrases BUT
press the [-] key instead of the [S
PACE] key, i.e.
Press [CLR] to clear the screen ready for a search.
Word size?
Press [2] then [-] then [5] and then [ENTER]

until you find the desired one. Press to scroll back up the

Press [CLR] to clear the screen ready for another search for
hyphenated phrases of “3-5” words, or press [CLR] again to
if you wish to search for a di
fferent sized phrase.
Searching by subject
In order to help narrow down your search for a solution, the
Crossword Puzzle Solver database has been categorised
into 250 subjects to enable you to search by subject.

Note: The subject titles are arranged with a cross-
reference format to help guide you to the desired subject
title. Please refe
r to the Index/Cross Reference booklet
enclosed.
To search by subject, press the [SUB] key before you have
entered the word size.
The “S” symbol on the right of the
display will come on indicating the Crossword Solver is
now in search by subject mode.
The screen will ask you to
choose
a subject...
Subject?
...is displayed briefly and then the screen displays the first
subject, “African countries”

The [ ], [ ] and [ ] symbols will flash alternately.
The [
] symbol indicates there is related subject under this
title.
The [ ] symbol indicates there are more subjects
available by scrolling down.
The [
] symbol indicates
there are more characters to the right.
You may scroll through the list until you find the desired
subject, then press [ENTER] to confirm the chosen subject.

y, you can also find the required subject by

typing in the first few letters. For example, we will type in
“t” then “r” then “e” which will take us to
Trees and
shrubs;
• Type the first letter, i.e. T and the screen displays the first
subject starting with that lette
r, i.e. Tennis. The first
character flashes to indicate the typed lette
r.
Tennis [ ] [ ]
The [ ] and [ ] symbols will flash alternately. The [ ]
symbol indicates there are subjects listed under Tennis
which you could refer to instead. If you wanted to view
those subjects press [ENTER].
• Type the second letter, i.e. R and the screen displays the
closest matching subject, i.e.
Trades, professions and
occupations.
The second letter flashes to indicate the

Type the third letter, i.e. E and the screen displays the
closest matching subject i.e.
Trees and shrubs. The third
letter flashes to indicate the typed letter.

• The [ ], [ ] and [ ] symbols will flash

• Press [ENTER] to view the subjects within the Trees and
Shrubs
headings.
• Scroll down and you will see the subjects Flowers then
Gardening and lastly
Trees and Shrubs.
• Press [ENTER] to confirm the desired subject.
You may find it is quicker to search for the desired subject
by using a combination of typing letters and then scrolling.
When you have found the desired subject, press [ENTER]
to
confirm.

w, when the unit performs a search, it will search for
words / phrases ON
LY within the chosen subject. This may
help you to find solutions faste
r.
The display will ask you to enter the desired word size.
Word size?
Now proceed as usual to find single words, phrases etc.
Recalling the subject
Once you have found the desired word / phrase, you can
press the [Sub] key again to reveal it
ʼs subject. Press the
[CLR] key to return to the current entr
y.

Press [CLR] once ONLY to clear the screen and stay in the
same
subject.
Or press [CLR] twice to clear the screen and return to
normal
mode.
To change the subject, press [SUB] after pressing [CLR]
twice.
Games
The Crossword Puzzle Solver also includes two word
games, Hangman and Jumble, described below...
Hangman
Press the [GAME] key to start the GAME mode.
Hangman? [ ]
Press [ENTER] to start Hangman. The unit will pick a word
(from 3 to 13 letters) and display a series of ?ʼs representing
these letters.
The number of lives is displayed on the right.

Type letters you think are in the word. Correct guesses will
reveal
the letter.

If you type a letter which is not in the word, the screen will
tell you and reduce your lives by one...
Not in word
If you type a wrong letter that you have already tried, the
screen will also then flash:
Tried!
(but not remove a life).
If you guess all the letters before losing all your lives, you
have won the game
If your lives reach zero, you have lost the game and the
correct word will be revealed.
If you want to give-up the game and reveal the word, press
the [S
PACE] key.
Press [CLR] to clear the screen and start a new game.
Press [CLR] twice to clear the screen and return to finding
crossword
solutions.
Jumbled word
Press the [GAME] key to start the GAME mode. Press

to view the “Jumble?” option.
Jumble? [ ]
Press [ENTER] to start Jumbled. The unit will pick a word
(from 3 to
13 letters) and display its jumbled letters. The
number of lives is displayed on the right.
NAELPHET 9
Type the word that you think the jumbled letters come
from. Press [ENTER] to see if you are correct. If you are
wrong, you lose a life and are asked to try again.
You can view the jumbled word at any time by pressing the
[ ] [ ] keys.
If your lives reach zero, you have lost the game and the
correct word will be revealed.
If you want to give-up the game and reveal the word, press
the [S
PACE] key.
Press [CLR] to clear the screen and start a new game.
Press [CLR] twice to clear the screen and return to finding
crossword
solutions.

Anagram Searching
The Lexibook Crossword Solver can also find Anagrams
for you.
This will allow you search for words in Crosswords
or other games with ease. Follow these instructions
to use:-
At the screen prompt
Word size? N
press the ANAG key
• The display will show
Anagram Mode
And then after 2 seconds will show
Word length ?
At this prompt enter a word length, in the same way as
you do for a normal crossword search.
The display will
clear to a series of “?
ʼs”, which match this word length
• Then enter a word that could be an anagram, like
“BREAD”, by changing the “?,s” to letters. Use the letter
keys and arrow keys to achieve this.
• Crossword Solver will then search the database and find a
series of words which match this criteria. In this example

the anagrams could be: BEARD, BREAD, or DEBAR.
Words will be sorted in alphabetical order A to Z.
When a word is displayed on the screen you can press the
SUB key to review which subject(s) the word comes from
and then press CLR to go back the anagram list.
• Even if you enter jumbled up letters the unit will find the
matching words. E.G. if you enter “rdaeb” and press
ENTER the CR251 will find the same word list as per the
examples
above.
To return to the original entry press the CLR key once. At
this stage you can edit your entry by using the arrow keys
and/or DE
L and letter keys to make a new entry..
• Press CLR twice to go back to the
Anagram Mode
prompt.
• Press CLR 3 times display to go back to the
Word size? N
prompt in crossword solving mode.

This product is covered by our 2-year warranty.
To make use of the warranty or after-sales service, please contact
your retailer and supply proof of purchase.
Note: Warranty does not cover broken LCD displays.It is the
nature of products utilising electronic memory that on rare
occasions the information stored in the memory of the unit may
be lost. Lexibook cannot accept any responsibility for the loss
of data caused by misuse, attempts to repair the unit, an error,
replacement of batteries, and use of batteries after their
use-by-date has expired, or any other circumstance. Similarly we
cannot accept any direct or indirect responsibility for financial
losses or complaints of third parties, which could result from the
use of this product. Our warranty covers material or installation-
related defects attributable to the manufacturer; with the exception
of wear caused by failure to respect the instructions for use or any
unauthorised work on the equipment (such as dismantling,
exposure to heat or damp etc).

replace the batteries with high quality
alkaline batteries. This will give the longest batte
ry life.
Care and Safety
• Keep unit away from direct sunlight, high or low
temperature, humidity and dust.
• Do not drop the unit.
• Do not use dete
rgent, liquid cleaners or solvents to clean
the unit.
Wipe the unit with a soft dry cloth.
• Do not twist or bend the unit.
Other
Please note that although the Crossword Puzzle Solver
cannot solve all your crossword clues, by using its
comprehensive database and your knowledge, you will be
able to quickly find many more suggestions and possible
solutions.
Warning: If your Crossword Solver receives an electrostatic
shock, causing malfunction, it can be reset by using the
reset button on the rear side of the unit.
