CAUTION:
BimetalThermometersoperatingbelowfreezingmust
haveaperfectlytightcasetoprevententranceofmoisture
whicheventuallywillcondenseandfreezeinsidethestem.
Thisconditionshowsupasafailureofthethermometerto
readaccuratelybelow32°For0°C.Forthisreasonitis
importanttoavoiddamagetotheglassfrontwhilethe
stemtemperatureisatfreezingorbelow.Allthermometers
arehermeticallysealedinadryatmosphereatthefactory
andrequirenofurthermaintenance.
CAUTION:
Thermowellsshouldbeusedonallpressurizedappli-
cations,toprotectthethermometerfromcorrosionor
physicaldamage,andtofacilitateremovalofthether-
mometerwithoutdisturbingtheprocess.
TESTING
AshcroftBimetalDialThermometersarecarefullycali-
bratedatthefactoryandundermostoperatingcondi-
tionswillretaintheiraccuracyindefinitely.However,as
inthecaseofallinstruments,itiswelltomakeperiodic
checksforaccuracyagainstknownstandards.
ADJUSTMENT
Ifitisnecessarytomakeanadjustmenttothether-
mometerproceedasfollows:
Onthermometersfittedwithan“ExternalAdjustment”
–Useasmallwrench,smallscrewdriveroracointo
turntheslottedhexagonheadinthebackofthecase
untilthepointerindicatesthepropertemperatureon
thedial.
MAINTENANCEOF
DIALTHERMOMETERS
Asidefromoccasionaltesting,littleornomaintenance
isrequired.
Besurethatthegasketedglasscoverisonthecaseat
alltimes,asmoistureanddirtinsidethecasewilleven-
tuallycausethethermometertoloseitsaccuracy.(See
cautionnotebelow.)
Ifthethermometerisusedformeasuringthetempera-
tureofamaterialthatmayhardenandbuildupan
insulatinglayeronthestem,thethermometershould
beremovedfromtheapparatusoccasionally,andthe
stemcleaned.Observethisprecautiontoensurethe
sensitivityoftheinstrument.
GENERAL
Inremovingthethermometeroutofthepackingbox,
handleitbythecaseorcaseoutlet.Avoidhandlingitby
thestem.
INSTALLATIONOFTHERMOMETERS
Thethermometershouldbemountedatanyconvenient
locationwhereitwillbesubjectedtotheaveragetem-
peraturevariationstobeindicated.
ForanEVERYANGLECONNECTIONPLEASEREFER
TOTHEREVERSESIDEOFTHISDOCUMENT
beforebeginningtheinstallation.
Avoidbendingthestemasthiswillcausemisalignment
oftheinternalparts,resultinginunduefrictionalerrors.
Totightenthethermometertotheapparatus,usea
wrenchappliedtothehexagonheadofthethreaded
connectionlocatedjustoutsideofthecase.
INSTALLATION
Locatethestemsothatatleasttwoincheswillbesub-
jectedtotheaveragetemperaturetobemeasured.
Exposingthestemtoatemperatureinexcessofthe
highestdialreadingshouldbeavoided.
Thethermometerisnormallyprovidedwithathreaded
connection.Totightenthethermometertotheappara-
tusorintothewell,useanopen-endwrenchappliedto
thehexagonheadofthethreadedconnection.Turnuntil
reasonablytight,thentightenstillfurtherinthesame
mannerasapipeelboworsimilarpipefittinguntilthe
scaleisinthedesiredpositionforreading.DONOT
TIGHTENBYTURNINGTHETHERMOMETERCASE.
Installthedrytypethermometersothatthemaximum
casetemperatureiskeptbelow200°Fatalltimes.
Installtheliquidfilledtypethermometersothatthe
maximumcasetemperatureiskeptbelow150°Fatall
times.
Whenathermometerisequippedwithawell,thewell
shouldbeinstalledontotheapparatusfirst.Thestemof
thethermometershouldthenbecoatedwithaheat
conductingmedium(amixtureofglycerinandgraphite
orvaselineoranyotherheavylubricantmaybeused),
afterwhichthethermometerstemisinserted,andtight-
enedintothewell.
