RescueandRecovery®program.
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramisanessentialtoolthatenablesusersandadministratorstorestore
backups,accessles,diagnoseproblems,andmakeEthernetconnectionsiftheMicrosoft®Windows®
operatingsystemwillnotopenorruncorrectly.Italsoenablesdeploymentofcriticalupdatestosystems
thatarecorruptedoroffthenetwork,aswellasautomaticallyapplyingpatchestoasystemwhena
restoreoperationisperformed.TheRescueandRecoveryprogramhelpsreduceITmanagementcostsby
decreasinghelpdeskcallsanddesk-sidevisits,aswellasimprovinguserproductivity.

Chapter1.Overview
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramrepresentsauniquecombinationofThinkVantageTechnologies.This
integratedapplicationprovidesasuiteofpowerfultoolsthatcanbeusedeveniftheMicrosoftWindows
operatingsystemwillnotstart.
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramhasthefollowingfeatures:
TheRescueandRecoveryPredesktopAreaprovidesanenvironmenttostartyourcomputerwhenyou
failtologintotheWindowsoperatingsystem.
TheRescueandRecoveryWindowsenvironmentenablesyoutobackuptheoperatingsystemandles
andrestoretheoperatingsystemandlesinfamiliarinterfaces.
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramenablesyoutostorebackuplesonexternalUSBstoragedevices,
suchasUSBashdrivesandUSBharddiskdrives.
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramenablesyoutostorethebackupdataofmultiplecomputersonone
storagedevice.
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramincludestheoptiontoswitchtoasimplieduserinterfacewithafew
basicoperations,orstaywiththeadvanceduserinterfacewithextendedoptions.Formoreinformationon

Note:SomefeaturesofRescueandRecoveryrunundertheWindowsoperatingsystem.Insomeinstances,
thesysteminformationusedintheRescueandRecoveryenvironmentisgatheredwhileWindowsis
running.IftheWindowsoperatingsystemdoesnotfunctioncorrectly,thiswillnotpreventtheRescueand
Recoveryenvironmentfromoperatingnormally.WindowsfunctionsarenotconguredintheRescueand
Recoveryenvironment.
TheRescueandRecovery4.5programsupportsbothlegacyandUniedExtensibleFirmwareInterface
(UEFI)bootmodes,whichmeansitsupportsbothMasterBootRecord(MBR)systemsandGUIDPartition
Table(GPT)systems.YoucanselectthedesiredbootmodeintheBasicInput/OutputSystem(BIOS).
PredesktopArea
TheRescueandRecoveryPredesktopAreaprovidesanemergencyworkspaceforuserswhoareunable
tostartWindowsontheircomputers.RunningunderWindowsPE(PreinstallationEnvironment),the
environmentofferstheWindowslook,feel,andfunctionandhelpsuserssolveproblemswithoutconsuming
ITstafftime.StartingfromtheRescueandRecovery4.5program,WindowsPEthatisusedbyalloperating
systemshasbeenupgradedtothe64–bitversionandallprogramsunderWindowsPEare64–bitversions.
Therefore,themicroprocessoryouuseshouldsupportthe64–bitarchitecture.

Warrantystatus
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramispreinstalledonLenovo-brandedcomputers.
Windowsenvironment
TheRescueandRecoveryWindowsenvironmentenablesuserstorescuelostdata,applications,and
operatingsystemswiththetouchofabutton.Thiscapabilityreducestime-consuminghelpdeskcalls,
whichresultinsupportcostsavings.
Youcanschedulebackupsofallusers’computers,therebylimitingriskanddowntime.theRescueand
Recoveryprogramoffersyourclientsanextralayerofsupportbypre-conguringautomaticexternalbackup
toaserverorexternalstorage.Backupsareencryptedbydefaultwiththe256AESkey.
Rejuvenating
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramcanoptimizesystemperformancebytakinganewincrementalbackup
andthendefragmentyourharddiskdrive.Therejuvenationprocesshelpseliminateviruses,adware,and
spyware,whilemaintainingyourcurrentsettingsanddata.Therejuvenatefunctionishiddenontheuser
interfacestartingfromtheRescueandRecovery4.5program.Youcanenablethefunctionandgetthe
rejuvenateuserinterfacedisplayedbysettingtheAdministrative(ADM)le.Fordetailedinformation,see

Recoveryprogramisnamedrnrdeploy.xml.OncetheXMLleiscustomizedandinstalled,settingsforthe

Installationconsiderations
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramhastwomaininterfaces.TheprimaryinterfaceoperatesintheMicrosoft
Windowsenvironment.Thesecondaryinterface,whichistheRescueandRecoveryPredesktopArea,
operatesindependentlyoftheWindowsoperatingsystem,intheWindowsPEenvironment.
TheRescueandRecovery4.5programsupportstheWindows7operatingsystemonly.However,itdoes
notsupporttheWindows7operatingsystemthatisupgradedfromtheWindowsXPorWindowsVista®
operatingsystem.
TheWindowsInstallerprogramsupportsupgradingtheRescueandRecovery4.30programorlaterversions
totheRescueandRecovery4.5program.However,allsettingswillnotbepreservedduringtheupgrade.
ItisrecommendedtomakeanewbackupafterinstallingtheRescueandRecovery4.5programonyour
Windows7operatingsystem.Youcanmakethebackupbyusingeitherascriptortheuserinterface.
Notes:
1.TheRescueandRecoveryprogramonlyworkswiththenon-BIOSversionofComputraceiftheRescue
andRecoveryprogramisinstalledrst,andthenComputraceisinstalled.
2.TheStorageManagementSubsystemcannotbeinstalledonacomputerthathastheRescueand
RecoveryprograminstalledwiththeWindowsPEareaalreadyinstalledasavirtualpartition.Both
WindowsPEandStorageManagementSubsystemusetheC:\minintdirectoryfortheirlesystems.The
waytohavebothinstalledatthesametimeistoinstalltheRescueandRecoveryprogramasatype

3.ApossiblesecurityriskmaybecreatedwhentheMicrosoftRecoveryConsoleisinstalledonasystem
withtheRescueandRecoveryprogram.MicrosoftRecoveryConsolelooksforallfolderswiththepath
C:\*\system32\cong\andifitndsthatpathitassumesitisanoperatingsystem.Iftheregistryentries
thatrequireaWindowspasswordarenotpresent,thenrecoveryconsolewillallowausertochoosethe
operatingsystemandthengainaccesstotheentireharddrivewithoutneedingtoenterapassword.
InstallingtheRescueandRecoveryprogram
TheRescueandRecoveryinstallationpackagewasdevelopedwithInstallShield10.5PremierasaBasic
MSIproject.InstallShieldPremier10.5usestheWindowsInstallertoinstallapplications,whichgives
administratorsmanycapabilitiestocustomizeinstallations,suchassettingpropertyvaluesfromthe
commandline.ThischapterdescribeswaystouseandruntheRescueandRecoverysetuppackage.Fora

RequirementsforLenovocomputers
ToinstalltheRescueandRecoveryprogram,Lenovo-brandedcomputersmustmeetorexceedthefollowing

Insharedmemorycongurations,theBIOSsettingformaximumsharedmemorymustbesettono

Note:Ifacomputerhaslessthan200MBofnon-sharedmemory,theRescueandRecoveryprogram
willrun;however,theuserwillbeunabletostartmorethanoneapplicationintheRescueand

TheWindowsInstallercanperformanadministrativeinstallationofanapplicationorproducttoanetwork
forusebyaworkgrouporforcustomization.FortheRescueandRecoveryinstallationpackage,an
administrativeinstallationunpackstheinstallationsourcelestoaspeciedlocation.

CompatibilitywithBitLocker
ToachievecompatibilitywithBitLockerDriveEncryption,itisrecommendedtoinstalltheRescueand
RecoveryprogramtoyouroperatingsystemafterthepartitionsareproperlysetupwiththeMicrosoft
BitlockerDrivePreparationTool.
WhensettinguptheBitLockerpartition,itisrecommendedtousetheMicrosoftBitLockerDrivePreparation
Tool.Thebootpartitionshouldbeatleast2GBinsize.
IfyoudonotusetheBitLockerDrivePreparationTooltopreparetheBitLockerpartition,youmusthavetwo
partitionsonyoursystemwheninstallingWindows7.Onepartitionshouldbe2GBandmarkedasactive;
thisiswherethebootlesreside.Theotheriswhereyouroperatingsystemisinstalledandwhereyour
datawillreside.WhenWindows7isinstalled,itwilldetectthetwopartitionsandshouldinstallonlythe
bootlestothesmallerpartition.Bothpartitionsshouldbetype0x07.

TohavetheRescueandRecoveryprogramworkcorrectlywithBitLockerinWindows7,thebestpracticeis:
1.UninstalltheRescueandRecoveryprogramifithasbeeninstalled.
2.RestartthecomputerandusetheBitLockerDrivePreparationTooltopreparethesystemforBitLocker
DriveEncryption.
3.InstalltheRescueandRecoveryprogramandrestartthecomputer.
4.StartBitLockerfromControlPanelandchoosethepartitiontoencrypt.
Note:ItisrecommendedtoencrypttheWindowsoperatingsystempartition(usuallydriveC)only.
5.ClickTurnonBitLocker,andfollowtheinstructiononthescreentoencryptthechosenpartition.
Afterthat,arecoverykeyisautomaticallycreated.
6.SavetherecoverykeytoaUSBstoragedevice.

Filerescueusedbeforerestore,promptstheuserforthebackupstoragelocationandthentheuserselects
abackup.TheRescueandRecoveryprogramwilldisplaythelesthatthecurrentuserisauthorizedto
access.Theuserthenselectstheles,folders,orbothtoberescued.Excludingthelocalharddisk,the
systemwilldisplayavailablelelocationswherethelescanberescued.Theuserwillneedtochoosea
destinationwithsufcientspacefortherescuedlesandthesystemrestoreles.
Operatingsystemandapplications
OperatingsystemandApplicationsgivestheusertheoptiontoselectabackupbeforethesystemdeletes
les.Filesdesignatedtobedeletedaredenedbytherulesintheregistry.Whenabackuphasbeen
selected,thesystemwillrestorethelesdenedbytheregistryfromtheselectedbackup.Thereare
optionsintheregistrylethatcanspecifyaprogramtorunbeforearestoreoperationorafterarestore

thesystemdriveandleavetheotherpartitionsintact.
Rejuvenation
Whenyouneedtorejuvenateyoursystem,theRescueandRecoveryprogramwilloptimizesystem
performancebytakinganewincrementalbackupandthendefragmentyourharddiskdrive.Therejuvenate
processhelpseliminateviruses,adware,andspyware,whilemaintainingyourcurrentsettingsanddata.The
rejuvenatefunctionishiddenontheuserinterfacestartingfromtheRescueandRecovery4.5program.You
canenablethefunctionandgettherejuvenateuserinterfacedisplayedbysettingtheADMle.
Torejuvenateyoursystem,dothefollowing:
1.EnabletherejuvenatefunctionandgettherejuvenateuserinterfacedisplayedbysettingtheADMle.
Fordetailedinformation,seetheRejuvenatesettingoftheRestorepolicyinTable32“\Rescueand
Recovery\Settings\Userinterface”onpage64
.
2.FromtheRescueandRecoveryinterface,clicktheRestoreyoursystemfromabackupicon.The
Restoreyoursystemscreenisdisplayed.
3.OntheRestoreyoursystemscreen,selectRejuvenateyoursystem.
4.Choosethedriveandbackupthatyouwanttousetorejuvenateyoursystembycompletingthe
followingprocedure:
a.Selecttheappropriatedrivefromthedrop-downmenuofavailabledrives.Backuplesonthe
selecteddrivearedisplayedbytheRescueandRecoveryinterface.
b.Selectthebackuplethatyouwanttousetorejuvenateyoursystem.
c.ClickNext.
d.Conrmthattheselectedbackupistheonethatyouwanttousetorejuvenateyoursystem,and
