No doubt you’ll be keen to jump right in and start making popcakes – and who could blame you?

kets. Usually you just need to add water/milk and an egg to these mixes and they all give great
results with very little waste. Follow the instructions on the packet to make the mixture and try to
be as accurate as possible when measuring the water/milk because liquid content is important for
consistent results.
TIP: Did you know you can weigh the water instead of measuring it? 150ml of water weighs
150 grams – accurate enough for milk too. That’s handy isn’t it? Hooray for the metric
system.
OK so if you really don’t want to use cake mix for your Popcake Maker’s inaugural outing then use
the basic recipe below:
225g self raising our
100g castor sugar
150ml milk
2 x medium eggs (about 60g each)
125g butter (softened or melted)
½ tsp vanilla essence
Mix the ingredients in a bowl – preferably with a lovely Swan Hand Mixer – until a smooth consist-
ency is reached. Careful not to over mix it though, as you could end up with very bouncy cupcakes
– and scowls from the kids.
Grease the Popcake Maker cooking plates (top and bottom) with a little vegetable oil or spray on
grease (best). Close the lid and switch it on. The (green) warming light will come on until the cor-
rect temperature has been reached. Then the red ready light will come on.
Whentheredreadylightcomeson,carefullyopenthelid.Useadesertspoontolleachpopcake
compartment with mixture - no more than 2/3 full. Be careful because the cooking surface will
be very hot!Trytoworkquicklywithllingthecompartmentsascookingwillstartimmediately.
Close the lid
The cooking time for most types of mix is between 5 and 8 minutes. Resist the temptation to have
apeekbeforetherst5minutesisup.Pupcakesdon’tliketobedisturbedwhilethey’recooking!
After 5 minutes, lift the lid and have a look. They should be risen and cooked, but you do have the
option of closing the lid and giving them another few minutes if you think they need it. This varies
from mix to mix and the type of recipe used.

Note: The Popcake Maker cooks from the bottom mostly, so the base of the popcake is likely to to
be a little more brown than the top. This is normal.
Once cooked, switch off and unplug the Popcake Maker. Use a wooden or heatproof plastic
spatular to carefully remove the popcakes to a wire tray for cooling. Wait until the popcakes are
completely cooled before decorating with any icing etc.
If you have enough mixure left for another batch simply re-grease the plates, switch the machine
back on and follow the steps outlined above. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have enough mixture to
llallthecompartmentswithyoursecondbatch.Thecookingtimeisn’taffected.
Sticks and Icing
It’s much easier to ice the popcakes when they are on sticks. Simply push the included sticks 3/4
of the way into the popcake and apply the icing decoration of your choice.

simple precautions:
Always disconnect from the mains supply and allow to cool completely before cleaning or moving
the Popcake Maker
Never immerse the base in water or any other liquid
Never use abrasive or strong chemical cleaners
Do not use metal utensils when removing popcakes or cleaning as these will damage the non-
stick surface
After use clean the cooking area with a moist cloth and dry thoroughly with kitchen towel. The
outside of the popcake maker can be cleaned in the same fashion.

In 1933 Swan were the first to develop an
electric heating element t hat could be
immersed in water.
This led to the Swan

of water in just over nine minutes - pretty
hot for the time! These days it takes about
two minutes for a Swan kettle to boil.
