OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT YOU
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EACH
TIME YOU USE THE MEMORY SAVER.
2. PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
WARNING! RISK OF EXPLOSIVE
GASES. A SPARK NEAR THE BATTERY
MAY CAUSE A BATTERY EXPLOSION.
TO REDUCE THE RISK OF A SPARK
NEAR THE BATTERY:
2.1 NEVER smoke or allow a spark or ame
in the vicinity of a battery or engine.
2.2 Remove personal metal items such as
rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches
when working with a lead-acid battery. A
lead-acid battery can produce a short-
circuit current high enough to weld a ring
or the like to metal, causing a severe
burn.
2.3 Be extra cautious to reduce the risk of
dropping a metal tool onto the battery. It
might spark or short-circuit the battery or
other electrical part that may cause an
explosion.
2.4 Do not permit the internal battery of the
memory saver to freeze. Never charge a
frozen battery.
2.5 Consider having someone nearby to
come to your aid when you work near a
lead-acid battery.
2.6 Have plenty of fresh water and soap
nearby in case battery acid contacts your
skin, clothing or eyes.
2.7 Wear complete eye and body protection,
including safety goggles and protective
clothing. Avoid touching your eyes while
working near the battery.
2.8 If battery acid contacts your skin or
clothing, immediately wash the area

To check the internal battery’s charge
status, press the Battery Status button on
the front of the memory saver.
The LEDs will indicate the charge level as
follows:
• A red
LED indicates a 50% or less
charge and you should immediately
recharge the memory saver.
• A yellow
LED indicates a 50 to 75%
charge. The memory saver may be used
but should be recharged as soon as
possible.
• A green
LED indicates the internal
battery is fully charged.
• The CHARGING
(red) LED indicates
the memory saver is charging (connected
to an AC power source.) At full charge,
the CHARGED
(green) LED will light.
6.2 Charging the Internal Battery Using the
Included Wall Charger
1. Work in a well ventilated area and do
not restrict the ventilation in any way.
2. Use only the included wall charger to
charge the internal battery. Using any
other charger or using the included
charger for any other purpose could
result in personal injury or property
damage.
3. Use the appropriate plug adaptor for
your plug type (type A for USA or type I
for AUS).
7
4. Plug the included wall charger into the
charger plug on the side of the unit.
5. Conrm the AC outlet voltage matches
the input voltage of the wall charger.
6. Plug the wall charger into a live AC
wall outlet.
7. The
CHARGING (red) LED will glow,
indicating charging.
8. The
CHARGED (green) LED will
light when the battery has reached
full charge. This could take up to 72
hours, depending on the age and
condition of the battery. The charger will
automatically go into maintain mode and
maintain the battery at full charge without
damaging it.
9. Charge the memory saver as soon as
possible after use.
NOTE: To reduce the risk of damage to
the electric plug or cord, pull by the plug
rather than the cord when disconnecting
the memory saver’s charger.
You may also charge the internal battery
while driving, using a male-to-male
charger cable (p/n 94500109 – not
included). Insert one end of the accessory
cable into the 12V DC power outlet and
the other end into the vehicle’s accessory
outlet (lighter socket). Completely
disconnect the charger cable when the
engine is not running.
NOTE: Use a male-to-male adaptor only
for charging the internal battery. You must
use the OBD Connector to save memory.
IMPORTANT: The CHARGING (red) LED
and the CHARGED (green) LED do not
operate during this method of charging.
Using this method to charge the battery
overrides the maintain mode and the
battery can be overcharged. Monitor
the progress of the battery and when it
reaches a full (100%) charge, disconnect
the charger. Do not charge it for more
than one hour or leave the battery
unattended. It could explode, causing
property damage or personal injury.
7. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Use the memory saver to save the
vehicle’s on-board diagnostic computer
settings (radio programs, diagnostic
codes, etc.) while the battery is
disconnected from the vehicle during
repair or maintenance.
7.1 BEFORE USING THE MEMORY SAVER
Make sure that the memory saver’s
internal battery is fully charged. See LED
Indicators section.
WARNING! Before disconnecting the
positive cable from the battery, it is
extremely important to realize this cable is
live (it is receiving 12V from the memory
saver’s OBD port) and cannot come
into contact with the negative cable or
the vehicle ground. Use an insulator
to cover the terminal to protect it from
accidental contact with the negative cable
or vehicle’s chassis. Failure to cover and
protect the positive cable terminal may
create a short circuit and cause damage
to the ECU or vehicle’s electrical system
and loss of vehicle memory.
WARNING! Verify all vehicle accessories
are OFF. To prevent overloading of a
vehicle fuse or other vehicle damage, do
not use the memory saver through the
OBDII port if the vehicle’s current draw
exceeds the vehicle specications when
the vehicle is in a KEY OFF condition.
Some newer vehicles continue to draw
power for an extended period of time
(cooling fans, alarms, etc.). Consult the
vehicle manufacturer’s specications to
determine the vehicle’s exact current draw
with all accessories off, then use an amp
clamp to determine the actual current
draw. The memory saver cannot be used
on vehicles that draw more power than
the smallest fuse in the OBD circuit,
ECU circuit or vehicle’s electrical system.
Exceeding this fuse rating may damage
the OBD, ECU and/or vehicle’s electrical
system.
7.2 USING THE MEMORY SAVER
DETECTOR AND MEMORY SAVER
Some vehicle manufacturers do not allow
the use of a memory saver through the
OBDII. Consult the vehicle manufacturer
before use, to determine if a memory
saver is acceptable for use on the vehicle.
Turn off the vehicle, remove the key, and
make sure all accessories are off.
WARNING: Verify all vehicle accessories
are OFF (fan, interior lights, etc.).
Headlights must be in OFF position, not
AUTO position. To prevent overloading
of a vehicle fuse, memory saver fuse or
other vehicle damage, do not use the
memory saver through the OBDII port if
the vehicle’s current draw is 4 amps or
more when the vehicle is in a KEY OFF
condition (use an amp clamp to measure
the amperage draw). If unable to measure
the vehicle’s current draw, turn the
vehicle’s key to the OFF position and wait
25 minutes. This ensures that all retained
accessories are in a power OFF state (for
example: fan, headlights, etc.).
8
1. On the back of the DSR136, move the
memory saver detector ON/OFF switch
to the ON position. The yellow ON LED
in box #1 will light, indicating power on.
2. Connect the OBDII diagnostic connector
to the vehicle’s OBDII port. Make
sure the connector is fully engaged.
The yellow
CONNECTED LED
in box #2 will light,
indicating a good
connection.
3. Verify that the green
PROCEED LED
in box #3 lights
up, indicating you
may disconnect the
vehicle’s battery.
If the red DO NOT
PROCEED LED
in box #3 lights up,
do not disconnect the vehicle’s battery;
disconnect the DSR136 and contact a
qualied service person for electrical
repair.
4. Disconnect the vehicle’s battery
cables and cover the positive and
negative cables with an insulator,
such as electrical tape. This prevents
the connectors from touching metal,
each other, or the chassis and causing
a short circuit, due to the vehicle’s
electrical system receiving power
through the OBD connection.
WARNING: When working with the
vehicle’s battery, review all of the battery
manufacturer’s safety instructions,
warnings and directives regarding battery
disconnection, removal and replacement.
5. Remove the old battery and put the
new battery into position.
6. Remove the insulator from the positive
cable and connect it to the positive
terminal of the new battery.
7. Remove the insulator from the negative
cable and connect it to the negative
terminal of the new battery.
8. Once the new battery is connected,
unplug the memory saver’s OBD
connector from the vehicle’s OBD port
and move the memory saver detector
ON/OFF switch to the OFF position.
9. Charge the memory saver as soon as
possible after use.
7.3 POWERING A 12V DC DEVICE:
The memory saver is a power source for
all 12V DC accessories that are equipped
with a 12V accessory plug. Use it for power
outages and shing or camping trips.
1. Make sure the device to be powered
is OFF before inserting the 12V DC
accessory plug into the 12V DC
accessory outlet.
2. Open the protective cover of the
DC power outlet on the back of the
memory saver.
3. Plug the 12V DC device into the DC
power outlet, and turn on the 12V DC
device (if required).
If the 12V DC device draws more than 9A
or has a short circuit, the internal circuit
breaker of the memory saver will trip
and disconnect the power to the device.
Disconnect the 12V DC device. The
breaker will automatically reset after an
overload occurs.
IMPORTANT: The DC power outlet is
wired directly to the internal battery.
Extended operation of a 12V DC device
may result in excessive battery drain.
Recharge immediately after unplugging
the 12V DC device.
IMPORTANT: Do not power a 12V device
with the memory saver while using the OBD
connector to power the on-board diagnostic
computer. Doing so will drain the memory
saver’s internal battery and reduce available
run time.
8. MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
8.1 After use and before performing
maintenance, unplug and disconnect the
memory saver.
8.2 Use a dry cloth to wipe all battery
corrosion and other dirt or oil from the
cords and the memory saver case.
8.3 Ensure that all of the memory saver
components are in place and in good
working condition.
8.4 Servicing does not require opening the unit,
as there are no user-serviceable parts.
8.5 All other servicing should be performed by
qualied service personnel.
9
9. MOVING AND STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
9.1 Store the memory saver in an upright
position.
9.2 Store inside, in a cool, dry place.
9.3 If the memory saver is moved around the
shop or transported to another location,
take care to avoid/prevent damage to the
cords and memory saver. Failure to do so
could result in personal injury or property
damage.
IMPORTANT: Do not use and/or store the
memory saver in or on any area or surface
where damage could occur if the internal
battery should unexpectedly leak acid.
9.4 IMPORTANT:
CHARGE IMMEDIATELY AFTER
PURCHASE
• KEEP FULLY CHARGED
Charge the memory saver’s internal
battery immediately after purchase, after
every use and every 30 days.
All batteries are affected by temperature.
The ideal storage temperature is at
70ºF. The internal battery will gradually
self-discharge (lose power) over time,
especially in warm environments.
Leaving the battery in a discharged state
may result in permanent battery damage.
To ensure satisfactory performance and
avoid permanent damage, charge the
internal battery every month.
