APARTMENT INTERCOM ENTRANCE PANELS
WITH PK292A AMPLIFIER
2. Do not apply power to transformer primary until entire system has
been installed and connected.
3. Use twisted pair wiring and shielded wiring where shown.
TEST AND CHECKOUT
1. At the entrance panel, press each button, checking to see that the
correct suite is buzzed each time.
2. At each suite, pick up the phone and communicate with someone at
the entrance panel, then press door button to check door release
operation.
ADJUSTMENTS AND PROGRAMMING
With the exception of adjustments to the “VOICE VOLUME” the PK292A
should not require any field adjustments. However, changes to the
“VOICE VOLUME” control and the installation environment might
require minor changes to the “BALANCE” control.
1. Voice volume may be adjusted using a small insulated
screwdriver through the openings marked “VOICE
VOLUME”.
2. Buzz volume may be adjusted using a small insulated
screwdriver through the opening marked “TONE VOLUME”.
3. Balance adjustment may be accomplished using a small
insulated screwdriver through the opening marked
“BALANCE”.
4. Using a small insulated screwdriver, adjust the “VOICE
VOLUME” control fully clockwise.
5. Select a remote handset that is a minimum of 50 feet from the
entrance panel and remove the handset from it’s cradle.
6. Slowly rotate the “BALANCE” control “CLOCKWISE” until
feedback occurs in the entrance panel. Mark the location of the
“BALANCE” control on the plastic surface of the PK292A.

AMPLIFIER LOCATION
For most applications the amplifier should be located inside the entrance
panel housing. Some entrance panels have provision for mounting the
amplifier on the back of the panel. Keep amplifier away from transformers
and other electrical equipment. Avoid temperature extremes. Normal
operating temperature is 0°C - 30°C. If it is necessary to run additional
wire from the panel to the amplifier, use shielded wire to connect the
microphone.
TekTone

AM629/649 and AM229/449 Series Apartment Entrance Panels
utilize a speaker, electrostatic microphone, as well as a diode connected
to each push button. If reusing an existing panel manufactured by others,
contact our technical department for installation details.
WIRING
Suite Telephones: Wire suites as shown in the wiring diagram layout Fig.
1. Each cable run requires one cond. #22 common, plus one cond. #22 per
suite. Maximum length is 400 feet (120 meters). Additional cable runs
may be added as needed. Cable should not be run in the same conduit with
(or close to) electrical wiring, background music wiring, or close to
transformers, fluorescent lights, or other electrical equipment. Leave
sufficient cable at each location to make connections. Do not cut cable at
each suite.
Transformer: Wire transformer to amplifier using two cond. #18 wire.
Maximum length is 80 feet (25 meters), or up to 200 feet (60 meters) using
#14 wire. Route cable away from suite phone wiring.
Door Release: Wire door release to amplifier using two cond. #18 wire.
Maximum length is 50 feet (15 meters), or up to 125 feet (40 meters) using
#14 wire. To use a 24 VAC door release, use a TekTone
®
SS106
transformer and connect as shown in Fig. 2. (Route cable away from suite
phone wiring.)
Connections: Make connections as shown in Wiring Diagram, observing
the following notes:
1. Before connecting, make certain wires are free from shorts
or grounds.

ADJUSTMENTS AND PROGRAMMING (cont.)
7. Slowly rotate the “BALANCE” control “COUNTER-
CLOCKWISE” until feedback occurs in the entrance panel.
Mark the location of the “BALANCE” control on the plastic
surface of the PK292A.
8. Position the “BALANCE” control halfway between the marks
made in steps “6” and “7”.
SWITCH SETTINGS
Switch #1.
1. SELF TEST: To enable self test, turn switch “1” to the right. To
disable self test, turn switch “1” to the left. For test instructions,
see “TROUBLESHOOTING” section.
Switch #2.
1. ENTRANCE TONE: To enable the buzz tone at the entrance,
turn switch “2” to the right. To disable the entrance tone, turn
switch “2” to the left.
Switch #3.
1. DOOR TIME: When door delay is enabled, turn switch “3” to
the left for 20 second door time, to the right for 10 second door
time.
Switch #4.
1. DOOR DELAY: Turn switch “4” to the left to enable door
delay, to the right to disable door delay.
FINISH INSTALLATION
1. Install amplifier where needed. Entrance panel installation instruc-
tions are included with the entrance panel.
2. Complete installation of suite phones on boxes. Do not overtighten
screws.
3. Connect power transformer primary to 117 VAC. Observe local
electrical codes.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If the system fails to operate properly, check all wiring. If the wiring is
correct, check the following:
1. The PK292A has a built-in test circuit to aid in testing the amplifier
and the installation. To use this test method, do the following:
a. Turn programming switch #1 to the ON position. The test light
located behind the connector should light. If it does not light,
skip to step 1d.
b. Gently tap entrance panel near the microphone. The tapping
should be heard in the speaker. If it is not, check microphone
wiring, speaker wiring, or check for defective microphone,
speaker or amplifier.
c. Proceed to step 2 for additional checks.
d. If the test light does not light, check transformer and wiring to
amplifier (16 VAC should be present at amplifier terminals T
and K). Remove wire from terminal J. If test light comes on,
then reconnect terminal J and remove suite telephone buzz
wires one by one until the test light does light. Check last wire
removed for shorts or a defective suite telephone.
e. Remove wire from terminals Z and ZW. If test light comes on,
then reconnect terminals Z and ZW and check entrance panel
for stuck push buttons or shorted diodes by removing suite
telephone buzz wires one by one until the test light does light.
2. Turn test light OFF, then proceed with following checks. (NOTE:
Failure to turn off the test light will not cause amplifier damage, but
will cause reduced intercom volume and increased noise at the
entrance panel.)
3. No door operation: Check wiring to door release or for defective
door release.
4. No buzz: Check wiring to terminals J and B.
5. No communication: Check wiring to terminals J and B, or for
defective suite telephone.
6. Excessive feedback (howling at entrance panel): Balance control
misadjusted, or defective suite telephone.
If these points fail to help, the amplifier may be checked by substitution.
