PowerManagerhelpsusersadjustpowersettingstogivethebestbalancebetweensystemperformance
andpowersavingthroughslidercontrolorpowerplans.
PowerManagerprovidesavarietyofpowersavingfeaturesthroughtwoessentialmodes,Basicand
Advanced.BasicmodeissetasdefaultwhenusersopenPowerManagerforthersttime.Userscan
specifythelevelofpowersavingbysimplyusingtheslider,withoutpowerplans.Advancedmodeenables
userstocongurepowerplansandthefullrangeoffunctionsinPowerManagertomeetspecicpower
savingneeds.PowerManagerenablesuserstoschedulepoweractionsbycreatingpoweragendasto
meetthespecicneeds.
Powermanagementonacomputercansaveenergyandmoney.WhentheITadministratorenforces
powermanagementstrategyoncomputersthroughouttheentireorganization,thesavingscanbefarmore
substantial.PowerManagerisconguredbydefaulttouseitsenergyefciencyfeatures.PowerManager
alsogivestheITadministratornumerousoptionsfortailoringpowermanagementsettingstooptimize
energyefciencythroughouttheirorganizations.
Note:PowerManagerhastwodifferentversions.OneisforWindowsXPoperatingsystemsandtheotheris
forWindowsVistaandWindows7operatingsystems.IntheWindowsVistaandWindows7version,the
term"powerplan"isused.IntheWindowsXPversion,theterm"powerscheme"isused.Inthisdocument,
nodistinctionwillbemadeandtheterm"powerplan"willbeusedtocoverboth.
Features
PowerManagerincludesthefollowingfunctions:
Balancetheperformanceandpowersavingofthecomputer
PowerManagerprovidestheslidertohelpusersquicklyandeasilysetthelevelofpowertobeused.
UserscancontroltheCentralProcessingUnit(CPU)speedandthebrightnessofthecomputerdisplay
bymovingtheslider.Movingtheslidertotheleft,towardHighperformance,increasestheCPU
speedandthebrightnessofthecomputerdisplaybutusesmoreenergy.Movingtheslidertotheright,
towardHighenergysavings,savestheenergywhilelimitingtheCPUspeedandthebrightnessof
thecomputerdisplay.
Whenusersmovetheslidertotheleftmostposition,thepowersavingsettingsintheMaximum
Performancepowerplanareapplied.Whenusersmovetheslidertotherightmostposition,thepower
savingsettingsintheMaximumEnergySavingpowerplanareapplied.
View,create,delete,andswitchpowerplans
Apowerplanisacollectionofhardwareandsystemsettingsthatmanageshowthecomputerisusedand
conservespower.PowerManagerpowerplansprovidemanymorepowersavingfeaturesthanWindows
®
powerplans.OnthePowerPlantab,theusercanviewspecicsettingsinanyofthepredenedpower
plans:PowerSourceOptimized,Timersoff(Presentation),MaximumPerformance,VideoPlayback,
MaximumEnergySaving,andThinkCentreDefault.Thesepredenedpowerplansaredesignedtomeet
theneedsofmostpeople.Ifapredenedpowerplandoesnotmeetsomeusers'needs,thePower
Managerwizardhelpstheseuserscreatetheirowncustompowerplans.Userscandeletecustompower
plansbutcannotdeletepredenedpowerplans.Userscaneasilyswitchtoanotherpowerplanby
clickingthePowerManagericoninthenoticationareaandthenselectingfromthepowerplanlist.
RemotelycongurePowerManageranddeploypowerplan
PowerManagerenablesanITadministratortocongurePowerManageranddeployapowerplanby
ActiveDirectory.TheITadministratorcanselectanactivepowerplanforclientcomputers,andinhibit
theusers'abilitytoswitchamongpowerplans,selectaspecicpowerplan,orcreateapowerplan.For

example,theITadministratorcandisabletheMaximumPerformancepowerplananduserscannotselect
it.Also,theITadministratorcancongureGlobalPowerSettings.
RemotelycongurePowerManagertodeploypoweragendas
PowerManagerenablesanITadministratortocongurePowerManageranddeployapoweragenda
byActiveDirectory.TheITadministratorcanupdatethepoweragendasettingsofclientcomputers
remotelyandtheusersofclientcomputerscanhavethosepoweragendasworkautomaticallywithout
conguringpoweragendasbythemselves.Ifpermitted,userscancongureindividualpoweragendas,or
createscheduledorimmediateactionsincluding:

Hibernate
Sleep
Switchtoapowerplan
Setmonitorbrightness
ThepoweragendasaredisplayedonthePowerAgendastabaftertheyhavebeencreatedbyusers.
Userscanselectoneormorecreatedpoweragendasforusetomeettheirspecicneeds.Also,users
caneditordeleteoneormorepoweragendas.
Note:Ifusersupdatethepoweragendasettingsonclientcomputers,theprevioussettingswillbe
permanentlyoverwritten.

ConsiderationsforinstallingPowerManager
VariousfunctionsinPowerManagerhavedependencyonhardwareanddrivers.Whenafunctionisnot
supportedonaclientcomputer,thefunctionishiddeninPowerManager.Installingthelatestversionofthe

ActiveDirectoryprovidesamechanismthatenablesadministratorstomanagecomputers,groups,endusers,
domains,securitypolicies,andanytypeofuser-denedobjects.ThemechanismsthatActiveDirectoryuses
toaccomplishthisareknownasGroupPolicyandAdministrativeTemplateles(ADM).WithGroupPolicy
andADMles,ITadministratorsdenesettingsthatcanbeappliedtocomputersorusersinthedomain.
LenovoprovidesPowerManagerADMlesforWindowsXP ,WindowsVista,andWindows7client
computers,withfourcategoriesofpolicysettings:Generalsetting,PowerPlan(Scheme)Deployments,

AddingAdministrativeTemplates
Designedtosaveyoutimeandeffort,LenovoprovidestheAdministrativeTemplateles,"DPWMGPO.ADM"
forWindowsXPoperatingsystems,and"DPMVGPO.ADM"forWindowsVistaandWindows7operating
systems,whichcanbeusedwithGroupPolicytosetthecongurationpoliciesforPowerManager.These
