2 Overview

2.1 Soil Moisture Sensor

1 Measuring electrodes

Measure soil moisture.

2 Temperature sensor

Measures the soil temperature.

2.2 Terminal Assignment

1 Brown wire

For supply voltage (VDC). It is connected to the terminal

marked “5V” on the STIHL GCI 100 Smart Garden Hub

(irrigation controller).

2 White wire

For ground connection. It is connected to the terminal

marked “GND” on the STIHL GCI 100 Smart Garden Hub

(irrigation controller).

3Green wire

For output voltage of temperature sensor between 0 V

and 1.5 V. It cannot be connected to the STIHL GCI 100

Smart Garden Hub (irrigation controller). The STIHL GCI

100 does not support the temperature sensor.

4 Yellow wire

For output voltage of soil moisture sensor between 0 V

and 3 V. It is connected to the terminal marked “S1”, “S2”

or “S3” on the STIHL GCI 100 Smart Garden Hub

(irrigation controller).

3.1 Intended Use

The STIHL SMI 50 soil moisture sensor is designed to

measure soil moisture and temperature.

It can be connected to an irrigation controller (the STIHL GCI

100, for example).

WARNING

￭ Using the soil moisture sensor for purposes for which it is

not designed may result in serious injuries and damage to

property.

► Use the soil moisture sensor as described in this

instruction manual.

► Use the soil moisture sensor outdoors only.

4 Preparing Soil Moisture Sensor for Operation

3.2 Clothing and Equipment

WARNING

￭ The user can be cut by sharp edges while handling the soil

moisture sensor. This can result in personal injury.

► Wear work gloves made of durable material.

3.3 Safe Condition

The soil moisture sensor is in a safe condition if it is not

damaged.

WARNING

￭ If components do not comply with safety requirements,

they will no longer function properly and safety devices

may be rendered inoperative. This can result in serious or

fatal injuries.

► Always use an undamaged soil moisture sensor.

► Never use a hammer to drive the sensor into hard soil.

► Do not modify the soil moisture sensor.

► If you have any queries: Contact your STIHL servicing

dealer for assistance.

4.1 Burying and Connecting Up the Soil Moisture

Sensor

► If the soil is hard: Use a suitable tool to loosen the soil or

soften it with water.

► Bury the soil moisture sensor by hand and check the

following points:

– Sensor is completely buried. Do not slush the soil

around the sensor.

– Soil must be pressed firmly against the sensor.

– Bury the sensor at a depth that about the same level as

the plant roots.

– If the sensor is buried in a plant pot: Make sure the plant

pot has a volume of at least 1 liter and the sensor is

buried at a distance of at least 5 cm from the side.

– The cable has been extended to no more than 100 m.

STIHL recommends burying the sensor horizontally with its

blade upright.

► Disconnect mains plug of controller to which the soil

moisture sensor is to be connected.

► Hook up wires of cable to an irrigation controller in

accordance with the specified terminal assignment,

@ 2.2.

The ability to process the measurement signals depends

on the irrigation controller to which the sensor is

connected.

4.2 Extending the Cable

The cable can be extended to a length of no more than 100

m with an extension cable and a junction box with an IP68

rating.

The extension cable must meet the following specifications:

– No. of wires: 3 (or, if temperature sensor is connected: 4)

– Wire gauge: 0.25 mm²

– Cable jacket: round

– Insulation: weather-proof, e.g. made of polyurethane

– Permissible temperature range: - 20°C up to + 85°C

► Strip about 5 mm (a) of insulation from the wires.

► Twist strands of wire so that all strands are tightly

together.

► Open the junction box (1).

► Push soil moisture sensor cable (2) and extension cable

(3) into the junction box (1).

► Connect wires (5) of sensor and wires (6) of extension

cable with a terminal block (4).

► Close the junction box (1).

► Hook up wires of cable to an irrigation controller in

accordance with the specified terminal assignment.

5.1 Storing the Soil Moisture Sensor

► Disconnect cable from irrigation controller.

► Check the following points when storing the soil moisture

sensor:

– Sensor is out of the reach of children.

– Sensor is clean and dry.

– Sensor is in an enclosed location.

6.1 Servicing and Repairing the Soil Moisture

Sensor

The soil moisture sensor cannot be serviced or repaired.

► If the soil moisture sensor needs to be serviced or

repaired: Replace the soil moisture sensor.

7.1 Troubleshooting the Soil Moisture Sensor

Condition Cause Remedy

No output signal from

sensor.

Cable is not properly connected. ► Connect cable correctly.

Cable is damaged. ► Replace the soil moisture sensor.

Cable extension is not correct. ► Extend the cable correctly, @ 4.2.

Soil moisture sensor does

not show correct reading

or does not trigger correct

reaction from irrigation

controller.

There is an air gap between the sensor

and soil.

► Bury the soil moisture sensor completely and

correctly.

Cable extension is not correct. ► Extend the cable correctly, @ 4.2.

Cable has been extended correctly but is

too long.

► Do not extend cable beyond maximum length of

100 meters, @ 4.2.

Cable has been extended but contacts

have not been properly insulated.

► Extend the cable correctly and insulate contacts

properly against soil moisture, @ 4.2.

Soil moisture sensor is buried in a plant

pot that is too small.

► Bury the sensor in a plant pot with a volume of at

least 1 liter and at a distance of at least 5 cm from

the side.

Soil moisture sensor

shows incorrect moisture

reading in frosty

conditions.

Sensor reacts to liquid water in soil.

Liquid water turns to ice in frosty

conditions. Soil moisture sensor cannot

produce correct measurements.

► Repeat measurement at a temperature above

freezing. It makes no sense to perform

measurements or irrigation at temperatures below

freezing.

► If the soil moisture sensor continues to show an

incorrect moisture reading: Replace the soil

moisture sensor.

The sensor is defective.

8.1 STIHL SMI 50 Soil Moisture Sensor

– Supply voltage: 3.3 VDC up to 30 VDC, not suitable for

operation on 24 VAC supply of solenoid valve systems

– Current consumption: about 2.7 mA measured at 12 VDC

– Moisture output signal: 0V to 3V linear

– Temperature output signal: 0 V to 1.5 V linear

– Measuring range of volumetric soil water content: 0% up

to 50%

– Measuring accuracy of volumetric soil water content: ± 3%

in reference soil

– Temperature measuring range: - 20°C up to + 85°C

– Accuracy of temperature measurement: ± 1.0°C

– Overall length of sensor: about 135 mm

– Length of cable: 10 m (can be extended to max. 100 m)

– Weight with 10 m cable: about 235 g

– Cable jacket: Polyurethane

9.1 Disposing of Soil Moisture Sensor

Information on disposal is available from STIHL servicing

► Dispose of the soil moisture sensor and packaging in

accordance with local regulations and environmental

requirements.
