1 Introduction
Thank you for your purchase. The information contained in
this manual will help you receive maximum performance and
satisfaction from your STIHL Smart Garden Hub and, if
followed, reduce the risk of injury during installation and use.

3.1 Smart Garden Hub

Indicates the status of the Smart Garden Hub.

Supplies the Smart Garden Hub with electricity when

5 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
5.1 Intended Use
WARNING
The STIHL GCI 100 Smart Garden Hub is designed to
control the following outdoor components:
irrigation valves with an output voltage of 24 V (AC) and
current of maximum 250 mA
soil moisture sensors with a maximum input voltage of
5V(DC)
flow meters with a maximum input voltage of 5 V (DC)
landscape lighting systems with an output voltage of
24 V (AC) and current of maximum 250 mA
The Smart Garden Hub controls the components using
up-to-date weather data and information and signals
provided by the connected components.
Improper or unauthorized use of the Smart Garden Hub
could result in personal injury or property damage. Use
the STIHL Smart Garden Hub only as described in this
manual.
5.2 Smart Garden Hub
WARNING
To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and other
personal injury or property damage:
Read and follow all cautionary markings on the
Smart Garden Hub and all instructions in this manual
before installing or using the Smart Garden Hub.
Never use a damaged or improperly functioning
Smart Garden Hub.
If installed outdoors, connect the Smart Garden
Hub's power supply cord only to a covered Class A
Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor (GFCI) receptacle
that has an enclosure that is weatherproof with an
attachment plug cap inserted or removed. Do not
use with receptacles that are weatherproof only
when the receptacle is covered (attachment plug cap
not inserted and receptacle cover closed).
If installed indoors, connect the Smart Garden Hub
to a properly installed electrical outlet that matches
the voltage and electrical frequency stated on the
Smart Garden Hub.
Use the Smart Garden Hub only within an ambient
temperature range of

Do not operate the Smart Garden Hub on a
combustible surface (e.g., paper, cardboard,
textiles) or in a combustible environment.

5 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
The Smart Garden Hub can produce sparks which may
ignite combustible gases, liquids, vapors, dusts or other
combustible materials. To reduce the risk of fire and
explosion:
Do not operate in a location where combustible
gases, liquids, vapors, dusts or other combustible
materials are present.
To reduce the risk of electric shock and other personal
injury or property damage when mounting the Smart
Garden Hub:
Ensure that no electrical cables, pipes or other
service lines run behind the wall where the Smart
Garden Hub is to be mounted.
Mount the Smart Garden Hub only as described in
this manual.
Do not permit minors to use the Smart Garden Hub.
To reduce the risk of eye injury:
Always wear close-fitting protective eyewear when
mounting the Smart Garden Hub.
Using a damaged power supply cord or plug may result in
fire, electric shock and other personal injury or property
damage. To reduce these risks:
Never yank or jerk the power supply cord to
disconnect. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the power
supply cord.
Do not use the power supply cord for any other
purpose, e.g., for carrying or hanging up the Smart
Garden Hub.
Make sure the power supply cord is positioned and
secured or marked so that they will not be stepped
on, tripped over, come in contact with sharp objects,
moving parts, or otherwise be subjected to damage

In case of fire, or if the Smart Garden Hub emits smoke,

If installed outdoors, connect the Smart Garden

6 Maintenance, Repair and Storage

Garden Hub. To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock or
other personal injury and property damage:
Users may carry out only the cleaning and
maintenance operations described in this manual.
Users must not attempt any other cleaning,
maintenance or repair.
Strictly follow the cleaning and maintenance
instructions in the appropriate sections of this
instruction manual.
STIHL recommends that all repair work be
performed by authorized STIHL servicing dealers.
Maintain and replace warning and instruction labels
as necessary.
Use of parts that are not authorized or approved by STIHL
may cause serious or fatal injury or property damage.
STIHL recommends that only authorized STIHL
replacement parts be used for repair or
maintenance.
To reduce the risk of electric shock:
Regularly check the Smart Garden Hub and ensure
that the insulation of the power supply cord and plug
are in good condition and show no signs of aging
(brittleness), wear or damage.
Replace the Smart Garden Hub if its power supply
cord or plug is damaged.
Replace all worn or pierced grommets.
Check the power supply cord and plug
regularly for damage. If they become
damaged, immediately disconnect from
the electrical outlet. Never use a
damaged power supply cord or plug.
Do not abrade, crush, jerk, or otherwise
abuse or misuse the power supply cord
or plug. Protect them from heat, oil and
sharp edges.
If the power supply cord or plug becomes
damaged, replace the Smart Garden
Hub.

of the watering season and before

7 Before Starting Installation
7.1 Preparing the Smart Garden Hub for Installation
To prepare the Smart Garden Hub for installation:
Select a location and mount the Smart Garden Hub to the
wall, @ 9.2.
Connect irrigation valves to the Smart Garden Hub,
@ 9.3.
Connect any soil moisture sensors or flow meters, @ 9.4.
Have any landscape lighting systems connected to the
Smart Garden Hub by a qualified electrician, @ 9.5.
If installed outdoors, connect the Smart Garden Hub's
power supply cord only to a covered Class A Ground Fault
Circuit Interruptor (GFCI) receptacle that has an
enclosure that is weatherproof with an attachment plug
cap inserted or removed and matches the voltage and
electrical frequency stated on the Smart Garden Hub's
rating plate.
If installed indoors, connect the Smart Garden Hub to a
properly installed electrical outlet that matches the voltage
and electrical frequency stated on the Smart Garden Hub.
Download and open the STIHL GCI App. The STIHL GCI
App is available on the App Store
®1
and on Google
Play™.

Follow the step-by-step instructions for creating your
STIHL GCI App user account.
Verify your e-mail address and re-open the STIHL GCI
App.
Follow the step-by-step instructions in the App for
completing the installation process. Initial access data can
be found on the inside of the cover.
Complete and check the initial installation, @ 9.6.
NOTICE
If the Wi-Fi connection is lost, the Smart Garden Hub will try
to re-establish a connection every 15 minutes. If it is unable
to connect to the Internet within 12 hours, the Smart Garden
Hub will restart and try to connect to the Internet once again.
If the Smart Garden Hub is still unable to connect to the
Internet, a notification will be sent to the registered email
address associated with the unit.
NOTICE
If the internet connection is lost, the Smart Garden Hub will
continue to operate on its existing settings, but it won't
receive weather updates or setting changes. In addition, the
internal clock will not be updated, which may affect the
watering schedule.
8.1 LED Bar on the Smart Garden Hub
An LED bar(1) shows the status of the Smart Garden Hub.
The LED bar can glow or flash green, yellow or red.
If the LED bar is off: The Smart Garden Hub is not connected
to a electrical outlet.
If the LED bar flashes yellow: The Smart Garden Hub is
booting.

9 Installing the Smart Garden Hub
If the LED bar flashes green: The Smart Garden Hub is
trying to establish a wireless network and internet
connection.
If the LED bar flashes green from outside to inside: The
Smart Garden Hub has set up its wireless hotspot to be
configured.
If the LED bar glows green: The Smart Garden Hub is
switched on, connected to the internet and functioning
properly.
If the LED bar glows red: The Smart Garden Hub is not
connected to the internet.
If the LED bar slowly flashes red: Check your e-mail account
for troubleshooting notifications and follow the instructions.
If the LED bar does not start to glow green within 20 minutes
again, disconnect the Smart Garden Hub from the electrical
outlet and contact your authorized STIHL servicing dealer.

9.1 Removing and Mounting the Cover
9.1.1 Removing the Cover
WARNING
To reduce the risk of electric shock, make sure the Smart
Garden Hub is not plugged into the electrical socket when
removing the cover. Take care not to damage the
electronics.
To remove the cover:
Disconnect the Smart Garden Hub from the electrical
outlet.
Remove the four screws (1) and remove the cover (3).
Avoid touching the electronics (2).
9.1.2 Mounting the Cover
WARNING
To reduce the risk of electric shock, make sure the Smart
Garden Hub is not plugged into the electrical socket when
removing the cover.
To mount the cover:
Make sure that the rubber seal (1) is not damaged and is
firmly seated in the housing.

Attach the cover (2) and tighten down all four screws (3)
until the cover is firmly attached.
9.2 Mounting the Smart Garden Hub on a Wall
WARNING
To reduce the risk of electric shock and other personal injury
or property damage when mounting the Smart Garden Hub,
ensure that no electrical cables, pipes or other service lines
run behind the wall where the Smart Garden Hub is to be
mounted, @ 5.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of injury during installation and operation,
read and follow the safety precautions and instructions in
this manual, @ 5. To reduce the risk of eye injury, always
wear close-fitting protective eyewear when mounting the
Smart Garden Hub.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, install the Smart
Garden Hub at least one (1) foot off the ground and ensure
that there is no risk that it may be immersed in water or other
liquids. Always install the Smart Garden Hub on a stable
surface.
WARNING
Do not mount the Smart Garden Hub on a combustible
surface or in a location where combustible gases, liquids,
vapors, dusts or other materials and substances are
present, @ 5.
When mounting, ensure that no electrical cables, pipes or
other service lines run in the wall behind the Smart Garden
Hub.
To mount the Smart Garden Hub to a wall:
Disconnect the Smart Garden Hub from the electrical
outlet.
Select a mounting location near the sprinkler valve lines,
within 6 ft. (1.8 m) of an electrical outlet that also receives
a strong signal from your WiFi network.
Remove the cover, @ 9.1.1.
Always install the Smart Garden Hub at least one foot off
the ground and never in any location where it could be
immersed in water or other liquids.
Use appropriate screw-in wall anchors or other similar
mounting devices if an appropriate wall stud is not
available.
Align the Smart Garden Hub as shown above. Mount to a
wall with the following dimensions:
a = minimum 1 ft. (30 cm)
b = minimum 7.6 in. (20 cm)

Push the sealing plugs (1) into the holes.
Mount the cover, @ 9.1.2.
9.3 Connecting Irrigation Valves
WARNING
To reduce the risk of electric shock, make sure the Smart
Garden Hub is not plugged into the electrical socket when
removing the cover.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of short circuit, which could lead to
electric shock, fire and explosion, make sure you only
connect irrigation valves with an output voltage of 24 V (AC)
and current of maximum 250 mA to the Smart Garden Hub.
To connect irrigation valves:
Disconnect the Smart Garden Hub from the electrical
outlet.
Remove the cover, @ 9.1.1.
Combine all irrigation valve ground wires of V1 to V16 to
one ground wire (3, COM) outside the Smart Garden Hub,
e.g. using the luster terminal in your valve box.
Separately wrap the individual wires of the valves (1) and
the combined ground wire (3) in water-tight and dust-tight
cable sheathing. The cable sheeting (2) must be round
and have a diameter of 0.2 in. to 0.4 in.(5 mm to 10 mm).

9 Installing the Smart Garden Hub
Carefully push the irrigation valves' combined control
wires (2) and ground wire (3) through different grommets
(7) without touching the electronics (5), electric
connection cover (4) or cable (6). Always guide through
the grommet closest to the control line and ground wire.
Carefully tear off the remnants (arrow) of the punctured
grommets (7) by hand.
Pull the wires back a few inches so that the grommet is
turned outwards in order to ensure water tightness.
Use a suitable tool (e.g. a wire stripper) to strip a = 0.2 in.
(5 mm) from the end and twist the wire strands of each
line.
STIHL recommends to crimp the wire strands with
appropriate wire-end ferrules (8) with insulating collar
meeting the requirements of your valves' wire diameter.
Select a terminal port from V-1 to V-16 you want the valve
to be connected to.

Loosen the screw (9).
Connect the control wire (11) to the selected
terminal (10).
Press firmly to ensure that the connection is secure and
will not come loose in the event of any subsequent
movement.
Tighten the screw.
Repeat the process for each irrigation valve.
NOTICE
The connection V16 is always active at the same time, if one
of the connections V1 to V15 is active.
Loosen the screws (12) of both "COM" marked
terminals (13 and 14).
Connect the ground wires to the respective "COM"
marked terminal.
Press firmly to ensure that the connections are secure and
will not come loose in the event of any subsequent
movement.
Tighten the screws.
Mount the cover, @ 9.1.1.
9.4 Connecting Sensors or Flow Meters
WARNING
To reduce the risk of electric shock, make sure the Smart
Garden Hub is not plugged into the electrical socket when
removing the cover.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of short circuit, which could lead to
electric shock and fire, make sure you only connect sensors
with a maximum input voltage of 5 V (DC) to the Smart
Garden Hub.

9 Installing the Smart Garden Hub
To connect sensors or flow meters:
Disconnect the Smart Garden Hub from the electrical
outlet.
Combine all sensor ground lines to one ground line (4,
GND) outside the Smart Garden Hub, e.g. using a luster
terminal.
Combine all sensor supply lines to one supply line (3,
VCC) outside the Smart Garden Hub, e.g. using a luster
terminal.
Separately wrap the individual sensor control lines (1), the
combined ground line (4) and the combined supply line (3)
in water-tight and dust-tight cable sheathing. The cable
sheeting (2) must be round and have a diameter of 0.2 in.
to 0.4 in.(5 mm to 10 mm).
Remove the cover, @ 9.1.1.
Carefully push the sensor‘s combined control lines (2),
ground wire (4) and supply wire (3) through different
grommets (8) without touching the electronics (6), electric
connection cover (5) or cable (7). Always guide through
the grommet closest to the control line, ground wire and
supply line.
Carefully tear off the remnants (arrow) of the punctured
grommets (8) by hand.
Pull the wires back a few inches so that the grommet is
turned outwards in order to ensure water tightness.

Use a suitable tool (e.g. a wire stripper) to strip a = 0.2 in.
(5 mm) from the end and twist the wire strands of each
line.

Repeat the process for every sensor.
Loosen the screw (13) of the "GND" marked terminal (14).
Connect the ground line (15) to the "GND" marked
terminal.
Press firmly to ensure that the connections are secure and
will not come loose in the event of any subsequent
movement.
Tighten the screw.

Connect the supply line (19) to the "5V" marked terminal.
Press firmly to ensure that the connections are secure and
will not come loose in the event of any subsequent
movement.
Tighten the screw.
Mount the cover, @ 9.1.2.
9.5 Connecting Landscape Lighting Systems
WARNING
To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury or property
damage, have landscape lighting systems connected only
by a qualified electrician.
To connect landscape lighting systems, an external relay is
required. The STIHL GCI Smart Garden Hub supports relays
with a coil rating of 24 V (AC) and a maximum current of
250 mA. The relay used must have a potential-separating,
double insulation between the coil and contact side.
Have any landscape lighting systems connected to the
Smart Garden Hub by a qualified electrician.
The relay's contact rating should be determined based on
your landscape lighting system voltage and maximum
electrical current.
9.6 Completing and Testing the Initial Installation
WARNING
To reduce the risk of electric shock, make sure the Smart
Garden Hub is not plugged into the electrical socket when
removing the cover. Make sure that the rubber seal is not
damaged and is firmly seated in the housing.
To complete the initial installation if installing the Smart
Garden Hub indoors:
Secure all lines so that they will not be stepped on, tripped
over, come in contact with sharp objects or otherwise be
subjected to damage or stress.

Insert the plug (1) into a properly installed electrical
outlet (2) that matches the voltage and electrical
frequency stated on the Smart Garden Hub.
The Smart Garden Hub will turn on and glow yellow for
approximately 30 seconds. Next, the LED bar (3) first
flashes and then glows green as the Smart Garden Hub
will be ready for use.
If the Smart Garden Hub has not been prepared for
operation yet, @ 7.1, the LED bar will start flashing green
first and then flash green from outside to inside. The Smart
Garden Hub is to be configured now.
To complete the initial installation if installing the Smart
Garden Hub outdoors:
Secure all lines so that they will not be stepped on, tripped
over, come in contact with sharp objects or otherwise be
subjected to damage or stress.
Insert the plug (1) only into to a properly grounded,
covered Class A GFCI receptacle (2) that has an
enclosure that is weatherproof with the attachment plug
cap inserted or removed and that matches the voltage and
electrical frequency stated on the Smart Garden Hub.
The Smart Garden Hub will turn on and the LED bar (3)
first flashes and then glows green as the Smart Garden
Hub will be ready for use.
If the Smart Garden Hub has not been prepared for
operation yet, @ 7.1, the LED bar will start flashing green
first and then flash green from outside to inside. The Smart
Garden Hub is to be configured now.
To test the initial installation:
Open the STIHL GCI App.
Enter your e-mail address and password to sign in.
In the main menu, select the sub-menu "Status."
Make sure the indicators "Internet connection" and "App/
cloud" are green. If one indicator is not green, disconnect
the Smart Garden Hub from the electrical outlet and wait
for a few seconds before you reconnect it. Wait a few more
minutes for the boot process to complete.
Return to the main menu and select "Create new zone."
Select "Zone 1," and activate the zone with the slider
"Enable zone."
Program the irrigation time using the slider "Activate
Manually."
This should operate the sprinklers in Zone 1. The initial
response time might take up to one minute. If the
sprinklers in the selected zone are working, Zone 1
successfully passed the test.
Repeat the process for every other irrigation zone. The
Smart Garden Hub is ready for use.

your system wiring and see the troubleshooting guide,
@ 11.

10 Inspection and Maintenance
Active Output Ports or Zones
Maximum 3 output ports or zones can be activated at the
same time. If both landscape lighting ports are activated, no
other valve can be activated at the same time.
Examples:
Master port V16 is activated, two other irrigation zones
between V1 and V15 are activated, landscape lighting L1
or L2 cannot be activated.
Master port V16 is activated, one other irrigation zone
between V1 and V15 is activated, landscape lighting L1 or
L2 can either be activated.
No irrigation zone between V1 and V15 is activated,
landscape lighting L1 and L2 can both be activated.
10.1 Inspecting and Maintaining the Smart Garden
Hub
WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury always unplug the
Smart Garden Hub before cleaning or inspecting.
To properly care for your Smart Garden Hub:
Keep the Smart Garden Hub housing and electrical
contacts free from foreign matter.
Clean the Smart Garden Hub as necessary with a dry
cloth or soft, dry brush.
Replace worn-out grommets.
Replace the Smart Garden Hub if the power supply cord
or plug is damaged.
Have worn, missing or damaged safety labels replaced by
an authorized STIHL servicing dealer.
If you make a warranty claim for a component that has not
been serviced or maintained properly, coverage may be
denied.
