SMART Board User’s Guide 1
SMART Board™ Overview
The SMART Board is an interactive, electronic whiteboard, available in a
range of sizes and models that can be used with or without a projector.
When the SMART Board is attached to a computer, it allows you to
collaborate on electronic documents, create a wide variety of annotation
objects, import information from almost any electronic source, and save,
print or e-mail a complete record of any SMART Board meeting. All
notes written on the SMART Board with regular dry erase markers can
be saved to a SMART Notebook™ file.
For information on installing both SMART Board hardware and software
components, refer to the companion manual to this user’s guide, the
SMART Board Installation Guide.
Creating Notebook Files on the SMART
Board
The notes you create on the SMART Board can be hand-written,
graphical or keyboard-input annotation objects. These notes can be
stored as a series of pages in a Notebook file, which can serve a wide
range of purposes.
You can take notes during a meeting, creating a simple record of the
highlights of an informal brainstorming session, then save them for future
reference, print them out for hardcopy distribution or send electronic
copies through your company’s intranet to all attendees.
You can present a complex and visually elaborate presentation prepared
in advance using both SMART Pen Tray™ tools and the drawing, writing
and importing tools available with SMART Notebook. As pages are
viewed and discussed, passages can be highlighted and annotated with
the same tools.
Using SMART Board Tools
Pick up a pen from the Pen Tray and write on the Notebook workspace
area or on top of any Windows
®
or Macintosh
®
application. If you change
your mind or make a mistake, use the Pen Tray eraser to erase it. This is
2 SMART Board User’s Guide
the simplest, easiest and most natural method for creating and erasing
Notebook annotations on the SMART Board.
In projected mode, the Pen Tray tools are also fully configurable. Simply
select
Pen Tray Tools
from the
Tools
menu in Notebook or from the
Board
menu in SMART Board driver. The three-tabbed
Configure Pen
Tray Tools
dialog box will appear, enabling you to reconfigure any
aspect of the various Pen Tray tools. Procedures for using and
configuring the Pen Tray tools are fully described in the SMART Board
driver online Help.
Using Notebook Tools
In addition to the Pen Tray tools, a full range of configurable drawing and
writing tools are available from the Notebook toolbars. The annotations
you create with these tools can be selected, moved, resized, or deleted.
You can also change the appearance of Notebook annotations after they
have been created. For example, you can apply a new color scheme or
change the line width of your annotations at any time. Simply select one
or several annotations and then click on the Color or Line Width buttons
in the toolbar to immediately adjust the visual characteristics of the
selected objects.
Using Data Import Tools
Data can be imported into the Notebook in a variety of ways:
Cut, copy and paste operations are available to import data to
the clipboard and then to the Notebook.
Screen Capture imports a customized screen region, an entire
screen or (in Windows Notebook only) a complete window from
another application into the Notebook. To activate this function,
select
Screen Capture
from the
Tools
menu.
Print Capture is a Windows-only Notebook feature that allows
you to print a complete multi-page file from another Windows
application to the end of the current Notebook file. All the pages
of the imported file can be immediately viewed
one printed
page per Notebook page. To activate this function, select
Print
Capture
from the
Tools
menu.
NOTE
The Notebook tools
function independently
of the Pen Tray tools.
SMART Board User’s Guide 3
Graphic files can be inserted directly into the current Notebook
page via the
Import Picture
command from the
File
menu.
If you have SMART 2000 Conferencing
installed, you can
import SMART 2000 Notepad files with the
Import SMART 2000
Notepad
command from the
File
menu.
Running Applications on a Projected SMART
Board
If you project a Macintosh or Windows application on the SMART Board,
the SMART Board driver software enables you to control that application
with your finger (a finger press being equivalent to a mouse click) and
annotate over top of it with the Pen Tray tools, keyboard, or your finger
and then save your annotations to a Notebook file (using Notebook
Screen Capture) for future reference and distribution.
Board-Aware Applications
A Board-aware application is a program written to take advantage of
SMART Board features, recognizing pen or drawing tool marks not as
external annotations but as integral program components. SMART Board
Software supports the following Windows Board-aware applications:
SMART Notebook (Versions 1.0 and 1.1) for Macintosh and
Windows
SMART 2000 Conferencing
(Version 3.4)
SMART Ideas
(Version 1.0)
Running Third-Party Conferencing Applications as
Board-Aware Programs
You can also use the SMART Board to run the leading desktop
conferencing applications as Board-aware programs, integrating SMART
Board functionality, with or without projection, with such conferencing
software as Microsoft NetMeeting™ and Intel™ ProShare™. When
these and other leading conferencing applications are run on the SMART
Board, whatever is written on the Board at one site is communicated to
all conferencing participants. This feature is enabled by the SMART
Aware™ application that runs with the SMART Board driver.
4 SMART Board User’s Guide
Hardware Compatibility
The SMART Board driver supports SMART's SC4 and SC5 serial
controllers and multiple SMART Boards. The Windows version of
SMART Board driver is plug-and-play compatible. You can operate
Notebook on up to four non-projected SMART Boards simultaneously. If
you prefer, up to one of these SMART Boards can be run with projection.
Online Help
Extensive Help files are available to provide online assistance. Select
Contents
or
Help Topics
from the
Help
menu of SMART Board driver,
SMART Notebook or SMART Aware to open the Table of Contents for
the online Help system. Topics can be quickly opened from this initial
Table of Contents or from internal Help hotspots.
Context-sensitive Help is also available to provide quick access to Help
topics on commands, screen features and toolbar buttons. In Notebook,
click once on the context-sensitive Help button on the Full or Compact
Toolbar, then click again on an area of the screen to view a related Help
topic. In the SMART Board driver window, press the SHIFT key and the
F1 key, move your cursor to an area of the screen, click once, and a
related Help topic will appear. On other screens and dialogs, simply
press the F1 key, move the cursor and click once.
About this Guide
The first section of this guide tells you how to manage the Board driver
software both with and without a projector. The sections that follow are
organized around the typical tasks performed before, during and after a
SMART Board presentation.
We focus first on using a SMART Board to create both Notebook files
and annotation objects within those files, import information from other
sources, and then sort and edit file contents. You’ll learn how to
effectively use your SMART Board during a presentation and then how
to print and/or send Notebook files to participants or any interested party.
The guide concludes with an overview of how to use six popular third-
party conferencing applications as Board-aware programs on the
SMART Board. Two final appendices provide advice on SMART Board
maintenance and SMART Board troubleshooting tips.
SMART Board User’s Guide 5
For full particulars on the use of all available features, commands and
toolbar buttons, read the detailed online Help for both SMART Board
driver (which includes Aware) and SMART Notebook.
Conventions Used
This manual is for both Windows and Macintosh users of SMART Board.
Almost all of the procedures and descriptions in this manual apply to
either system. However, any information that relates solely to Windows
users is accompanied by a window icon (either in the margin or
heading), and information specific to Macintosh users is distinguished by
a similarly placed apple icon.
NOTE
: Procedures common to both Windows and Macintosh are
described in terms of Windows conventions and screen captures.
6 SMART Board User’s Guide
Managing the SMART Board
When you initially install SMART Board Software, you are asked if you
are running the SMART Board with or without a projector — that is, in
projected or non-projected mode. This determines whether or not a
check mark subsequently appears beside the
SMART Board has a
projector
toggle in the
Board
menu of SMART Board driver. It is very
important that this toggle accurately reflects the projected or non-
projected status of your SMART Board.
For example, if you are operating the SMART Board without a projector
and discover that writing on the upper portion of the Board causes menu
commands to be activated, the Board driver is likely unaware of the non-
projected status of your SMART Board. Look at
SMART Board has a
projector
in the
Board
menu and ensure that it is deactivated (no check
mark appears beside it).
Projected mode translates Board contact into mouse functionality and
Pen Tray tool use into electronic ink. If you find that the Board is
unresponsive to either contact or Pen Tray use, look at
SMART Board
has a projector
in the
Board
menu and ensure that it is activated (a
check mark appears beside it). If non-projected mode has been
accidentally clicked during SMART Board setup, you can change it to
projected mode by selecting
SMART Board has a projector
from the
Board
menu to toggle the check mark on.
Using a SMART Board with Projection
A projected SMART Board is one that has a computer image projected
on it. As stated above, a SMART Board driver running in projected
mode translates SMART Board contact into mouse functionality, and
Pen Tray tool use into the appearance or disappearance of electronic
ink (writing and erasing). In other words, you write on the projected
SMART Board with virtual, electronic ink rather than physical ink,
using either the SMART styluses or the Pen Tray pens
with their caps
securely on.
If you’re running Notebook on a SMART Board with projection, you
should be aware that SMART Board contact can be configured to
produce a wide range of events. Your finger or any pointing device
If you are using a
projector, the SMART
Board icon in the
System Tray will have

can produce a left or right mouse click, draw a circle, rectangle, or
straight line, write in 16 differently colored pens or highlighters, or
selectively erase annotations. In projected mode, the default event
produced by Board contact is always a left mouse click.
Orienting a Projected SMART Board
If you are using a projector with your SMART Board, the projected
computer image must be oriented properly on the Board. Without proper
orientation, the cursor will not track your finger or a pointing device
accurately.
Orientation is the first task performed after installing the SMART Board
Software. However, if the SMART Board is accidentally jostled or moved,
you may need to perform the orientation procedure again. The detailed
procedure for orientation is described in the
SMART Board Installation
Guide
and in the online Help for the SMART Board driver.
You can quickly access the orientation and configuration dialogs
by
pressing the two Pen Tray buttons simultaneously (holding them down
for a few seconds). If you are currently unconnected to the SMART
Board, the
Check Board Connections
dialog box will appear. If you are
connected to the SMART Board, the
Pick the Orientation Level
dialog
box will appear.
Alternatively, you can click
twice
on the System Tray icon, located on the
right side of the Task Bar (see the following figure) and the orientation
and configuration dialogs will appear.

8 SMART Board User’s Guide
Using a SMART Board without Projection
In non-projected mode, write on the SMART Board with the pens in the
Pen Tray
with their caps off
as you would on an ordinary whiteboard.
However, unlike an ordinary whiteboard, whatever you write is
simultaneously displayed on your computer screen in the pen color you
selected. Use the Pen Tray eraser to erase both the dry erase marker on
the Board and the electronic ink on your monitor. When all the Pen Tray
tools are in place, contact with the Board has the effect of erasing
electronic ink with a small eraser.
We also recommend that you use the Notebook Scale to Fit view in non-
projected mode. Scale to Fit accommodates the entire Board workspace
without the need for scrolling, ensuring that whatever you write on the
Board will be displayed on your monitor. Select the
Scale to Fit
command from the
View
menu of Notebook.
NOTE:
If you are using SMART Board driver without projection, you
must ensure that the
SMART Board has a projector
selection in the
Board
menu is deactivated (does
not
have a check mark beside it).
Otherwise, when you write anywhere outside of a Board-aware
application workspace with dry erase ink, you may inadvertently activate
menu commands or other system elements with mouse clicks. If
projected mode has been accidentally clicked during SMART Board
setup, you can change it to non-projected mode by selecting
SMART
Board has a projector
from the
Board
menu to toggle the check mark
off.
Accessing SMART Board Commands
The SMART Board driver window is a point of entry for accessing
commands from the
Board
menu. Among other functions, the Board
commands allow you to select the port for the SMART Board, select
projected or non-projected status, orient the SMART Board, configure
the Pen Tray tools, and access the floating tool palette, the error log and
online Help.
The Board commands –
Orient Board
,
Pen Tray Settings
,
Aware
Settings
,
Floating Tools
,
Error Log
,
SMART Board has a Projector
and
Exit
– are also available (in Windows only) with a right mouse click
on the SMART Board icon in the System Tray, as described below.
If you are using the
SMART Board without
projection, the SMART
Board icon in the
System Tray will have
a white screen area,
representing the
whiteboard
appearance of a
SMART Board that
does not have a
projected image cast
on it.
NOTE
You can also access

Creating Annotation Objects in Notebook
Files
You can create or erase annotation objects with the aid of the pens,
buttons and eraser on the Pen Tray, with the various
tools available from
Notebook
or a combination of both methods.
Creating Objects with the Pen Tray Tools
If you are running Notebook on a SMART Board, use the Pen Tray tools
to create or erase objects. This is the simplest, easiest and most natural
method of creating annotations on the SMART Board. You can also use
the Pen Tray buttons to move to the next page or perform right mouse
clicks.
If you are using the SMART Board with a projector, the Pen Tray pens,
buttons and eraser can be reconfigured by selecting the
Configure
SMART Board Pens
command from the
Tools
menu. The three-tabbed
Configure Pen Tray Tools
dialog box will appear, enabling you to
reconfigure any aspect of the various Pen Tray tools. Procedures for
using and configuring the Pen Tray tools are fully described in the
SMART Board driver online Help.
Creating Objects with Notebook Tools
You can also use the various toolbar buttons in Notebook to create
annotation objects. These objects can be blocks of keyboard-entered
text, freehand writing or drawings, or ellipses, lines or rectangles.
The first step in creating an object from a Notebook toolbar is to either
click on the appropriate toolbar button or select the tool from the pull-
down
Draw
menu. The second step is to select visual attributes for that
14 SMART Board User’s Guide
tool
such as color, line width, font and font characteristics
with the
color, line or font tools.
Notebook objects can be configured in a wide array of colors, fonts and
widths either before or after they have been created. In addition, objects
can be selected and then resized, moved, grouped or ungrouped, and
cut, copied and pasted with ease. For more information on these
operations, see the section entitled “Editing Objects on the SMART
Board” on page 29.
Objects you create within a specified area or time can be automatically
grouped with other objects created within the same time or spatial frame.
This feature is called SMART Grouping.
Writing with Notebook Tools
You can use the tools available from the Notebook toolbars to create
Notebook annotations. You can change both the color and line width of
these annotations either at the time of their creation or later.
To create a freehand object with the Pen Tool:
1. Click the Pen button in the Full Toolbars.
or
Select
Pen
from the
Draw
menu.
When moved over the Notebook canvas, the cursor becomes a
pen icon.
2. Select an appropriate color by clicking the Color button, and then
clicking on a color from the resulting palette. You can also select
a line width for your freehand annotation by clicking first on the
Line Width button, and then on one of the 6 displayed widths.
3. Click and drag with the pen cursor, or, if you are working on a
SMART Board, touch the Board and drag with your finger or any
pointing device to create a freehand annotation object.
Each continuous stroke created with the pen cursor is treated as
a separate object that can be individually selected and modified,
moved, deleted, resized, etc.

When you use the Text Tool, you can either use the default standard
Text Box size or click and drag to create a custom-sized Text Box. You
should make the box the approximate width of the text you are adding.
The text will automatically wrap at the right boundary, so it remains
within the width you’ve established.
You can resize a Text Box after you’ve created it, but the text inside will
remain the same size. The text will, however, rewrap according to the
new box width.
