Introduction

Congratulations on purchasing the Motorola MWR815 weather alert

radio. Before operating the radio, please read all safety and operating

instructions. After the radio is set up, configured and operating properly,

be sure to store the manual in a safe place for future reference.

Important Safety Instructions

1. Only accessories included in this package or specified by the

manufacturer should be used with the radio.

2. Do not use cleaners or solvents to clean the exterior of the radio. Use

only a damp or dry cloth.

3. Do not expose this product to splashing or dripping water. For

example, bathtubs, sinks, wet basements, swimming pools, etc.

Objects containing liquid, such as vases or drinking glasses, should not

be placed on top of this product.

4. Do not place the product near any heat sources such as radiators,

stoves, or other appliances that produce heat (including amplifiers).

5. Do not place the product on an unstable cart, table, etc. The radio may

fall, causing physical injury and damage to the radio.

6. Do not attempt to service the receiver yourself. Removing the cover will

void the warranty. Changes or modifications not expressly approved by

Motorola may void the user’s authority granted by the FCC to operate

this device and should not be made.

7. Do not plug the wall adaptor into the power outlet if the outlet is wet.

Backup Battery Replacement

LOW BATTERY beeps will sound every 10 minutes when the batteries are low,

dead, or not installed. The batteries should be replaced when the battery

indicator

flashes.

1. Turn the radio upside down and locate the battery door tab. Press the door

tab and gently pull the door towards you to open.

2. For C batteries, remove the batteries by pulling the ribbon attached to

the radio.

3. For AA batteries, remove the batteries by gently pulling them out by hand.

4. Follow step 3 under respective “Battery Installation”.

Note: When the radio is powered by the wall adaptor, alkaline batteries will

last as if they were stored on the shelf. In the event of an extended loss of

commercial AC power, the radio will operate from the battery as follows:

Battery Receiver ON, volume level 4 Weather Alert standby

AA up to 2 days up to 9 days

C up to 6 days up to 21 days

We recommend using C batteries as they have a longer life than AA batteries.

Radio Antenna

Place the radio where it gets the best reception. Adjust the orientation and

length of the antenna for the best reception. The Weather Signal Level icon will

show the signal strength of the weather channel.

External Antennas

You may experience poor reception depending on the distance to the

NWR transmitter. To improve the reception signal, an external antenna

(not included) can be used. The external antenna should be connected into

the WX EXT ANT jack located on the back of the radio.

Powering the Radio

The weather alert radio is designed to provide continuous service during

emergencies. It has a standard wall adaptor to connect to your power outlet

and is the main source of power; however, backup batteries should be installed

for power outages and other emergency preparedness situations. It uses 4 AA

or 4 C batteries (not included).

Connecting to a Power Outlet

1. Connect the wall adaptor cable to the [6-15 V DC] input jack located on the

back of the radio.

2. Plug the wall adaptor into a 110-115 Volt AC power outlet.

Installing C Batteries

1. Turn the radio upside down and locate the battery door tab. Pull back the

tab and lift it then gently pull the door open.

2. Lower the battery brackets and position the ribbon to the left of the battery

compartment.

3. Follow the polarity marking (+/-) indicated in the battery compartment. Insert

the batteries and replace the battery compartment door.

4. The battery level will appear on the LCD.

Installing AA Batteries

1. Turn the radio upside down and locate the battery door tab. Pull back the tab

and lift it then gently pull the door open.

2. Raise the two AA battery brackets located at the base of the battery

compartment and snap these into place. Ensure the battery ribbon is stored

at the base of the battery compartment.

3 Follow the polarity marking (+) indicated in the battery. Insert the batteries

and replace the battery compartment door.

4. The battery level will appear on the LCD.

Tuning the Weather Receiver

1. Press

or to select the channel.

2. Pressing will also turn the radio o and will generally

turn o or exit any alarm, alert siren, menu setting, or receiver state.

Adjusting the Weather Receiver Volume

1. Press or to adjust the volume level (1-16).

Setting Time and Date

The weather alert radio is equipped with an alarm clock and date functionality.

The time and date are used in the weather alert message display, so for alert

message clarity it is important to have the correct time and date set.

Setting the clock

1. Press twice. SET CLOCK TIME will appear.

2. Press or to change the hour.

3. Press to conrm your selection. The cursor will jump to the minutes.

External Alert Jack

The weather alert radio has an external alert output jack for accessories

geared for the hearing/visually impaired. (e.g. flashing light, bed shaker,

outdoor siren.) To use any of these accessories, insert the connector into the

alert output jack.

BASIC OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Setting the Language

The weather radio has 3 language settings, English, French and Spanish.

English is the default setting.

WEATHER ALERT

SAME Weather Alerts

NOAA/EC transmit coded weather and civil emergency alerts using the Specic

Area Message Encoding (SAME) technology. SAME enables you to customize the

weather alert radio to receive only the messages relevant to your geographic area.

By programming your geographic location (State, Province, Territory, County,

Parish, or geographic division) into the radio, you minimize undesired alerts.

How the Weather Alert Works

In the event that a weather alert is released for your set location (s), the

following will occur:

1. The radio’s weather alert siren will sound.

2. The LCD backlight will flash red for Warnings, Orange for Watches and

Yellow for Advisories.

3. The County/Parish/Province and city will scroll across the screen.

4. The expiration time and date will scroll across the screen.

5. The above will cycle continuously until the EVENT expires. The radio will

then default to the “current time” screen against a blue backlight.

The default setting is to receive alerts for any and all locations. The asterisk is used

to indicate the current setting.

Alert Enable

The weather alert feature is enabled by default. Disabling this feature will

prevent you from receiving important weather alerts. We recommend that you

do not disable this feature.

2. Press ALERT ENABLED will be displayed and the will appear.

Setting the Weather Alert Location

The weather alert radio is pre-programmed with over 4000 USA and Canadian

geographic locations as well as the 6 digit SAME (USA)/CLC (Canada) codes.

For USA locations, the radio has also been pre-programmed with the appropriate

weather radio channel frequency for simple conguration.

You can program the radio to receive alerts from single or multiple locations.

The options will appear in the following order:

• State, Province or Territory

• County, Parish or geographic division

to turn on the weather receiver.

until SET LOCATION appears.

3. To select single or multiple locations, press

Note: Multiple locations must be selected within the coverage area of a single

Weather Radio transmitter site. The 1st location selected will determine the

weather radio transmitter to be monitored for alert signals. The subsequent

location selections will be limited to the locations covered by that same

weather radio transmitter site.

or Territory.

7. Press or to scroll through county /

parish / city names of the selected state / province.

8. Press to conrm your selection.

9. The selected location’s SAME/CLC code will appear.

Note: Some locations may be covered by only one channel. Canadian

locations will allow the selection of any channel 1-7. You may need to

relocate the receiver or adjust the antenna for best reception.

If you selected more than 1 location in step 4, you must repeat steps 7-9 for

each additional county/parish/city

The weather alert radio is now configured for your location. In this

configuration, the alert siren and color coded text display only for the

location and the weather channel frequency you selected.

Temporary Override of the Weather Channel setting

You can manually tune and temporarily monitor announcements on any channel.

3. The channel will flash when in override mode.

4. The receiver channel will automatically revert to the default SET

LOCATION conguration after 10 minutes.

Manually Entering a Location

To manually program the weather alert radio with a single county, parish, city,

or marine area, you need to know the SAME (USA)/CLC (Canadian) 6-digit

code and the correct weather channel frequency for that location.

Manually entering SAME/CLC code and Weather Radio Channel

1. Press

until SET LOCATION appears.

2. Press or until MANUAL ENTRY appears.

3. Press to input the SAME/CLC code.

4. Press or to set the 1st digit then press

to conrm your input.

5. Repeat step 4 to enter all 6 digits.

6. Press or to select the correct weather

radio channel.

7. Press to conrm your MANUAL ENTRY location settings.

Setting the Emergency Alert Event Level

You can block the siren from sounding on some messages that may not be

relevant to your geographic area. For example, a flood warning that may be

issued in your county may not aect your location. You may not want the siren

to sound for a flood warning.

Note: The Public Alert standard requires the receiver to respond always with

the color coded backlight and an audible siren to a minimum of 28 events,

and to respond to the standard set of 67 events as a factory default. Certain

events may not presently be broadcast in all areas.

Enabling Emergency Alert Event Codes

CHECK RECEIVER Error Messages

The weather alert radio will notify of a loss of communication from the

NOAA/EC weather radio broadcast stations with the message:

Weekly Test Messages are transmitted from all NOAA/EC weather radio.

Success in receiving these test messages every 7 days is measured by the

weather alert radio. If 10 days elapse without receiving the test message (or

any other type of SAME encoded alerts), the weather radio signal is no longer

being received eectively.

If you receive this error message, turn on the receiver. Check the weather

signal level display for 2 or more bars. Reposition the radio in the room, or

reorient the antenna as necessary to achieve good reception. Check to be

sure the LOCATION settings are correct, and the correct Weather Channel

frequency is being used.

Review any stored messages, noting the dates. Once you have checked the

receiver, the 10 day timer will reset. If the radio is properly congured, you

should not see an error message.

Weather Alert History

The weather alert radio will store up to 10 alert messages in its memory. When

there are 10 old messages stored and a new message is received, the oldest

message will be removed. When the receiver is initially powered on, or reset

to factory defaults, NO ALERT will be displayed. If messages are stored,

the respective alert will be displayed with the corresponding color coded

backlight color.

is no alert, the following message will flash on the screen.

Setting the Alarm to Radio or Chime

1. Press until WAKE TO CHIME flashes.

2. Press or . CHIME or RADIO will flash.

3. Press to conrm your selection.

Setting the Backlight

1. Press

until BACKLIGHT appears. There are 6 backlight levels. The

backlight setting will flash.

Press or to select an alternate backlight level.

3. Press to conrm your selection.

Setting the Contrast

1. Press

until the CONTRAST menu appears. There are 3 CONTRAST

levels. The default contrast setting (CONTRAST 2) will flash.

2. Press or to select an alternate contrast

level.

3. Press

to conrm your selection.

Setting the Key Beep

1. Press

until KEY BEEP ON appears. The default setting is ON.

2. Press or to toggle ON or OFF.

3. Press to conrm your selection.

Adjusting the Siren Volume

The weather alert radio has 2 volume levels for the siren heard when a weather

alert message is received.

1. Press

until the SIREN LOW flashes. The default setting is HIGH.

2. Press or toggle through LOW and HIGH.

3. Press to conrm your selection.

ALARM CLOCK

Setting the Alarm Clock

The weather alert radio has 2 alarm times as well as a snooze function to control

the alarm clock. The alarm sound can be set to RADIO or CHIME. The default

alarm time is 6:00 AM for both alarms.

Enable/Disable the Alarms

You can enable one or both alarm times. The alarm is disabled when no alarm

icons appear. The default setting is OFF.

automatically exit after 5 seconds.

Snooze Function

The alarm will sound for 54 minutes unless stopped by pressing

or snoozed for 9 minutes by pressing .

Resetting to Factory Default Settings

To erase all conguration settings in the weather alert radio and reset to factory

defaults:

1. Unplug the wall adaptor and remove the batteries.

2. Hold while plugging in the wall adaptor

3. Continue to hold while powering on the unit.

4. The software version will appear.

Consumer Products and Accessories Limited Warranty (“Warranty”)

Thank you for purchasing this Motorola branded product manufactured under

license by Giant International Limited, 3495 Piedmont Rd., Bldg. 10,

Ste 920, Atlanta, Georgia 30305. (“GIANT INTL. LTD.”)

What Does this Warranty Cover?

Subject to the exclusions contained below, GIANT INTL. LTD. warrants that this

Motorola branded product (“Product”) or certied accessory (“Accessory”)

sold for use with this product have been manufactured to be free from defects

in materials and workmanship under normal consumer usage for the period

outlined below. This Warranty is your exclusive warranty and is not transferable.

Who is covered?

This Warranty extends only to the rst consumer purchaser, and is not

transferable.

What will GIANT INTL. LTD. do?

GIANT INTL. LTD. or its authorized distributor at its option and within a

commercially reasonable time, will at no charge repair or replace any Products

or Accessories that do not conform to this Warranty. We may use functionally

equivalent reconditioned/refurbished/pre-owned or new Products, Accessories

or parts.

What Other Limitations Are There?

ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING AND WITHOUT LIMITATION

THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR

A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE DURATION OF

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY, OTHERWISE THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT

PROVIDED UNDER THIS EXPRESS LIMITED WARRANTY IS THE EXCLUSIVE

REMEDY OF THE CONSUMER, AND IS PROVIDED IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER

WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. IN NO EVENT SHALL MOTOROLA

OR GIANT INTL. LTD. BE LIABLE, WHETHER IN CONTRACT OR TORT

(INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), FOR DAMAGES IN EXCESS OF THE

PURCHASE PRICE OF THE PRODUCT OR ACCESSORY, OR FOR ANY

INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF

ANY KIND, OR LOSS OF REVENUE OR PROFITS, LOSS OF BUSINESS, LOSS

OF INFORMATION OR OTHER FINANCIAL LOSS ARISING OUT OF OR IN

CONNECTION WITH THE ABILITY OR INABILITY TO USE THE PRODUCTS

OR ACCESSORIES TO THE FULL EXTENT THESE DAMAGES MAY BE

DISCLAIMED BY LAW.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the limitation or exclusion of incidental or

consequential damages, or limitation on the length of an implied warranty, so

the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. This Warranty gives

you specic legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from one

jurisdiction to another.

the accessories original purchase by

The balance of the original warranty

or for ninety (90) days from the date

returned to the consumer, whichever

is longer.

Exclusions

Normal Wear and Tear. Periodic maintenance, repair and replacement of

parts due to normal wear and tear are excluded from coverage.

Batteries. Only batteries whose fully charged capacity falls below 80% of

their rated capacity and batteries that leak are covered by this Warranty.

Abuse and Misuse. Defects or damage that result from: (a) improper

operation, storage, misuse or abuse, accident or neglect, such as physical

damage (cracks, scratches, etc.) to the surface of the product resulting

from misuse; (b) contact with liquid, water, rain, extreme humidity or heavy

perspiration, sand, dirt or the like, extreme heat, or food; (c) use of the

Products or Accessories for commercial purposes or subjecting the Product

or Accessory to abnormal usage or conditions; or (d) other acts which are not

the fault of MOTOROLA or GIANT INTL. LTD., are excluded from coverage.

Use of Non-Motorola branded Products and Accessories. Defects or

damage that result from the use of Non-Motorola branded or certified

Products or Accessories or other peripheral equipment are excluded from

coverage.

Unauthorized Service or Modification. Defects or damages resulting

from service, testing, adjustment, installation, maintenance, alteration, or

modication in any way by someone other than MOTOROLA, GIANT INTL.

LTD. or its authorized service centers, are excluded from coverage.

Altered Products. Products or Accessories with (a) serial numbers or date

tags that have been removed, altered or obliterated; (b) seals that are broken

or that show evidence of tampering; (c) mismatched board serial numbers;

or (d) nonconforming or non-Motorola branded housings, or parts, are

excluded from coverage.

Communication Services. Defects, damages, or the failure of Products or

Accessories due to any communication service or signal you may subscribe

to or use with the Products or Accessories is excluded from coverage.

USA Users

This product complies with the exacting standards for CEA-2009B Public

Alert devices, and will provide you with the information needed for the eects

of weather and other external hazards. It receives digitally encoded civil and

weather emergency alert messages and has a receiver that tunes to the 24/7

broadcasts issued by the National Weather Service. The weather alert radio

receives all 7 NOAA Weather Channels and uses Specic Area Message

Encoding (SAME) to identify specic areas, like a county or portion of a state/

province.

Canadian Users

The radio can be programmed with the Canadian Location Code (CLC) for

the immediate area to screen out messages that does not apply to the user.

Specic types of messages such as can be inactivated, however, certain event

codes such as tornado warnings cannot be disabled. The MWR815 receiver

also permits notication of weather watches and advisories in addition to

weather warnings.

The weather alert radio receives all 7 EC (Environmental Canada) Weather

Channels and uses Specic Area Message Encoding (SAME) to identify

specic areas, like a county or portion of a province.

seller of the Product

showing the serial number of the Product

(d) a written description of the problem; and, most importantly

(e) your address and telephone number.
