About these instructions
The operation described here mainly refers to the use of the remote control handset (R/C).
Buttons with same or similar marking at the main unit have the same function like those of
the remote control (R/C).
Preparation for turning on
Place of erection
Ø
For setting up the unit please choose a location with sufficient air circulation around. That
prevents overheating. Don’t expose the unit to direct sunlight or other heat sources.
Ø
Do not pile up other units on top of your receiver. That would block the vent holes and
cause the device to overheat.
Before using the remote control
1. Please open the battery compartment.
2. Insert two batteries (1,5 V, size AAA). Please
make sure the polarity matches the marks insi-
de the compartment. Otherwise the r/c will not
work and may be damaged. Replace the cover.
3. Please point the r/c towards the main unit when
operating its buttons.
The r/c works properly in a distance below 5m
and in an angle of up to 60° of the front of the
unit. No obstacles may stand in the way bet
-
ween r/c and infrared sensor.
Ø
Should the r/c start to work unreliably replace
both batteries. We recommend using alkaline
batteries.
Ø
Batteries should not be disposed by ordinary refuse disposal. Please lead
empty batteries towards appropriate collecting points. Never throw batteries
into fire.
Ø
If you won’t use the r/c for some time, please remove the batteries from the compart
-
ment, to prevent damage by leakage.

Connecting the antenna
For being able to receive radio programmes, connect the enclosed FM-projection
antenna for FM-reception and the AM-loop antenna for medium wave reception.
FM-antenna
For the FM-reception, please wind off the enclosed
projection antenna completely. Please push the
plug of the antenna on the central pin of the FM 75
? terminal. If your device is later working in
FM-operation, pass the antenna in such a way that
you achieve an optimal, noise-free reception.
If you connect an outside antenna, this an
-
tenna must be grounded against lightning
strikes. It is essential that you discuss this
matter with an antenna expert. Never try to install an outside antenna on
the roof of a house on your own. This is very dangerous and may only
be done by qualified service experts.
AM-antenna
In order to install the enclosed medium wave antenna on a flat plane, assem-
ble it onto the stand as described in the following picture:
Connect the two connection wires of the medium wave antenna with the “AM
LOOP” terminals on the rear side of the receiver. Determine the optimal recepti
-
on position of the antenna.
Tips:
Ø
In order to avoid disturbing noises during medium wave reception, please keep the loop
antenna away from speakers and other technical equipment.
Ø
You can also connect the cable network of the Telekom to the FM 75 ? terminal. In most
cases, it transmits radio programmes as well.
10
Connecting speakers
Important information
Ø
All shown or mentioned connection cables or not included in the delivery, they are availa
-
ble in specialised trade.
Ø
Please switch off all involved devices before establishing the connections.
Ø
In order to prevent the development of humming and ambient noises, never pass the
connection cables together with speaker or power cords.
Ø
BEFORE connecting the speakers, check their impedance. Connect only speakers having
an impedance of 4 - 8 ohm or more.
Ø
On the red cable terminal, the positive speaker signal is present, on the black terminal,
the negative signal is present. When connecting the boxes you have to make sure that
you always connect the positive speaker signal with the positive (+) input and the nega
-
tive signal with the negative (-) input of the box.
Ø
As you can connect up to seven satellite speakers to AV-R600, we’ve dropped the spea
-
ker output for the subwoofer. But nevertheless you can of course connect one, but then it
has to be an active typ, i.e. with built-in amplifier.
Ø
If you want the rear surround signal to be reproduced by not 2 speakers (as shown abo
-
ve) but only one, please connect it to the LB/BS (= Back Surround) terminal.
11
For connecting the cables, remove ca. 10mm of the insulation
and twist the strands. Unscrew the desired connection terminal.
On the top and on the bottom you can now see openings in
which you can insert the denuded ends of the cable. Now
tighten the clamp again. Pay attention that blank ends of alrea
-
dy connected speaker cables never get in touch with each other
during operation. Otherwise, the device is damaged by this
short circuit.
Connecting audio und video devices
Video connection
In this section, you will learn how to connect DVD-players, tape decks or similar devices.
When establishing these connections, the device must also necessarily be switched off, as
otherwise voltage peaks my damage your speakers.
For the connection of DVD-players, satellite receivers and TVs, S-Video, Video, and Compo
-
nent video inputs and outputs are available. If all these connection possibilities are available,
we recommend you to use the Component- or S-Video connection as they provide higher pic
-
ture quality. If you connect, however, more video devices, it simplifies later operation if you
connect all video devices with the same kind of connection to the inputs of the AV-receiver.
Otherwise, you have to connect the TV via a video, S-Video and Component video cable. You
also had to switch the input at the TV if you switch to another video device at the receiver.
12
In brief:
Ø
Signals reaching the receiver via a video input can only reach the TV via the output “Vi
-
deo-Monitor-Out”.
Ø
Signals reaching the receiver via a S-Video input can only reach the TV via the output
“S-Video-Monitor-Out”.
Ø
Signals reaching the receiver via a Component video input can only reach the TV via the
output “Component Video-Monitor-Out”.
Tip:
When purchasing your AV-receiver, you watched out for quality. Do the same when selec
-
ting your speaker and audio cables. Cross-section and conducting material play an impor
-
tant role when it comes to music pleasure.
Analogue and digital connections
Many video components have analogue and digital outputs (e.g. DVD-players). We recom
-
mend you to select the digital connection if possible, as only then can you enjoy DTS and
Dolby Digital Surround. With an analogue connection, your receiver can only operate in the
operation modes DOLBY PRO LOGIC II, MUSIC, THEATER, HALL or 5 Stereo.
We have provided your receiver with connections of both digi-
tal formats (coaxial and optical). These inputs are named
COAXIAL DIGITAL IN, VIDEO 1 COAXIAL IN, VIDEO 2 OPTI-
CAL IN and AV-3 IN OPTICAL (Front panel). If your video devi-
ces have coaxial and/or optical digital outputs, connect them
here.
Tip:
As a protection against dust, there is a cap on the optical digital input. If you want to use the
connection, remove the cap carefully. Keep it thoroughly so that you can put it on again if
you remove the optical cable from this connection again.
Audio connections
In addition to the digital inputs, your AV-receiver has
analogue audio inputs as well: AUX / VIDEO 1 / VIDEO 2 /
DVD. Here, you connect the analogue audio outputs of
your audio and video devices via RCA cable. The "PHO
-
NO" input is designed for the connection of a turntable
with magnetic pickup. In order to connect an audiotape
or cassette device, please use the TAPE terminals. For a
better overview and in order not to interchange the stereo channels you should always con
-
nect the white plug of the cinch cable with the white socket (left channel) and the red plug
with the red socket (right channel).
Tips:
Ø
We want to emphasis that the digital inputs of your AV-receiver can also be used for con
-
necting pure audio devices.
Ø
Please plug the connector firmly in the socket so that a reliable contact is established.
13
Positioning the boxes
For really enjoying the sound experience “Surround-Sound”, you should position the spea
-
kers approximately like this:
1. TV monitor
2. Left front speaker
3. Subwoofer
4. Center speaker
5. Right front speaker
6. Left surround speaker
7. Right surround speaker
8. Rear left surround speaker
9. Rear right surround speaker
10. Listener’s position
The front speakers reproduce the front
stereo effect, the center transmits in
most of the cases the performers’ dialo
-
gues. The surround speakers create the
three-dimensional sound impression by
reproducing ambient noises complying
with the scene. The rear surround spea-
kers are required for enjoying Dolby Digi-
tal EX or DTS-ES audio. They improve the
quality of sound effects and the realistic
acoustics. The subwoofer produces the
acoustic base and completes the sound
experience.
The speaker arrangement cannot always be implemented optimally, the following points
should, however, always be considered when positioning the speakers:
The following applies to the front and center speakers:
Ø
Position these speakers all on the same level with each other, best on the listener’s ear
level.
Ø
These speakers should radiate in the direction of the listener.
Ø
The speakers should all have the same distance to the listener’s position.
The following applies to the surround speakers:
Ø
These speakers should exceed the listener’s ear level by approximately 1 meter.
The following applies to the subwoofer:
Ø
In the ideal case, the subwoofer should be situated between the two front speakers. If
this is not possible, experiment with the arrangement until you have the optimal overall
impression of your system. In many cases, the positioning in the corner of the room as
-
sists in the sound propagation.
14
On the operation
Switching on/off
Ø
Connect the plug of the power cord with a properly connected 230V~ household mains
socket.
Ø
Press the power switch POWER in order to
switch on the device. It is now in standby
mode and the blue indicator lamp is illumina
-
ted.
Ø
Press the STANDBY button at the device or
the POWER button on the remote control to
switch the unit on. If you want to put the unit
into standby mode, press agian one of these
buttons.

standby operation, the receiver consumes some energy. Thus, you should switch it off if
you don’t use if for some period of time.
Volume control, muting
Ø
The blue illuminated knob is the volume control which lets you set the overall volume.
Turn the controller clockwise in order to increase the volume. Turn the controller coun-
ter-clockwise in order to decrease the volume. The display shows you the so-called atte-
nuation in dB (decibel): Full volume means a signal attenuated by 0 dB. So the display
shows 0 dB (or MAX VOL). The lowest volume, -90 dB (or MIN VOL) means the maximum
attenuation of the signal. Alternatively, you can control the volume using the VOLUME
+/- keys of the remote control.
Ø
Press the MUTE key of the remote control if you want to mute the tone. Press the key
once again if you want to switch the tone on again.
Selecting inputs and operation modes
Press the key of the desired input channel on the remote control:
TUNER, VIDEO 1/2/3, DVD, AUX, TAPE oder PHONO. Alternatively you can turn the INPUT
SELECTOR at the device to select the input.
On the next page you find a chart that shows you all available input channels. Some of these
channels offer an analogue and digital signal path. You can toggle them using the INPUT
MODE key on the remote control.
Tips:
Ø
Via the input keys, the audio and video signals are switched. If you choose an input that
has no video connection (= Tape / AUX / TUNER / PHONO), the device does not provide a
picture at the video, S-Video, or Component video output.
Ø
We recommend you to reduce the volume before switching to other inputs and to then in
-
crease it again slowly. This protects you from sudden volume fluctuations.
Ø
In the display, the incoming audio format is shown.

to deactivate the surround mode, press the 2CH-key.
PRO LOGIC IIx
Dolby® Pro Logic® IIx technology (PLIIx) is an extension of Dolby Pro Logic II (PLII) ma
-
trix-decoding technology. Dolby Pro Logic IIx technology offers decoders more flexibility in
deriving additional outputs to take better advantage of all the amplifiers and speakers
found in higher-end surround systems, and to do so from a wider range of program material
and sources. There are two standard modes: „Movie” und „Music”.
How to get PL II x:
1. Press the PROLOGIC IIx buttonat the device or the DOLBY PL IIx button on the R/C.
This will activate „SURROUND BACK 2 SPEAKERS DOLBY PL II x 7 MOVIE”. Please use
this setting if you’re using 2 seperate rear surround speakers in your system (factory de-
fault mode). We recommend this mode when viewing movies.
2. Press this button again to change the mode to „SURROUND BACK 2 SPEAKERS DOLBY PL
II x 7 MUSIC”. This setting is better suited for viewing musical performaces.
3. In both „Movie” and „Music” modes you can press the SURROUND BACK button, if you’re
using just 1 speaker for the rear surround channel (press 1 x) or if you’re using no rear
surround speakers at all (press 2 x).
Tip: The currently selected mode is shown in the display.
Experiment with these settings until you have found a setting that is in your opinion opti
-
mal. Orientate yourself always by the format of the present audio material. Information on
this can in most cases be found on the case of the data medium.
17
Direct In
Pressing this button activates the analogue 6.1 DIRECT IN
input. Here you can connect the discrete audio output of a
DVD player to playback high-quality DTS / AC3 sources. The
LB/BS socket is designed to receive a single-channel back
surround signal.
Phones output
On the left front side of the device, you find the phones jack PHONES. Connect here stereo
phones with a 6.3 mm jack plug. The speakers are switched off. We recommend you to
switch to STEREO so that you don’t miss anything in phones operation.
Display key
Press the DISPLAY key while the device is processing external signals in order to have the
format of the input signal respectively the currently selected operational mode shown.
AV3 input
On the front panel you can find the input VIDEO 3. These sockekts
are ideal to use with equipment that you often have to connect and
disconnect, like portable cameras or DAT recorders.
18
The speaker configuration
Entering the speaker’s size
Your receiver needs to know whether the speaker boxes connected are big or small ones.
Subject to the size the speakers will receive also the low energy-ric hfrequencies. Small bo
-
xes are mostly not able to reproduce these frequencies. They even may be overloaded and
thereby damaged by low frequencies.
Press the SPK SETUP button on the R/C repeatedly. Now the Front L/R => Center => sur
-
round => rear surround speakers will be called in sequence. For the center and the sur
-
round speaker you can use the +/— buttons to specify whether the respective box is
SMALL,
LARGE or missing (NONE). The front speakers are fixed as large ones and can not be changed.
Switching off the subwoofer
When the unit is in DOLBY or DTS mode and if the device is not in the SURROUND mode, you
can switch the subwoofer on or off using the SUBWOOFER ON/OFF key.
Delay time
For the Dolby Digital / Dolby Pro Logic II operation, you can set propagation delays in ms
(milliseconds) for the center and the surround speakers. Thus, the stereoscopic impression
can be intensified.
If you set the delay time in Dolby Digital operation, 15 ms are automatically added to the
surround channels in Dolby Pro Logic operation. The current setting appears in the display.
Press the DELAY TIME key of the remote control in Dolby Digital operation. In the display,
the speaker channel that is to be set is shown:
S L/R for the surround speakers, B L/R for
the rear surround speakers and
C” for the center. Now press the +/— buttons, to set the
desired delay time
- for the surround channels to 0, 5, 10 or 15 ms
- for the rear surround channels to 15, 20, 25 or 30 ms
- and for the center channel to 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 ms.
In Dolby Pro Logic operation the following delay times are available:
- for the surround channels 10, 15, 20 or 25 ms
- for the rear surround channels 5, 10, 15 or 20 ms
- and for the center channel 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 ms.
In the surround operation modes, playback via the speakers that have been set like this is
now slightly delayed compared with the front speakers. Please determine the setting that is
optimal for your situation by changing the different parameters.
Dynamic compression
Using the DYNAMIC key, you can set the dynamic compression of the sound. By “Dyna
-
mic”, we mean the difference in volume between very loud and very quiet passages, that
means between explosions and whispering e.g. if you have sensible neighbours or if you like
to watch action films during the night, you should set a preferably high compression (DRC =
4/4). With the setting DRC = 0/4, you receive full dynamic. Simply press the DYNAMIC key
repeatedly. The respectively set value is shown in the display.
Tipp:
Ø
Bei Programmquellen im DTS-Format ist keine Dynamik-Kompression möglich.
19
Test tone
Using the test tone, you can determine the volume proportion of the single speakers to each
other in DTS, Dolby Digital, or Dolby Pro Logic II operation. Once the found balance is set,
you don’t have to change it again unless you change the position of the speaker boxes.
1. Set the normal overall volume.
2. Press the TEST TONE key repeatedly. Now, each speaker reproduces the test tone alo
-
ne, one after another, and you can control its volume +/- 10 dB using the VOLUME +/-
keys. The speaker that is currently active is shown in the display. It is the goal to set a
volume in all speaker channels that you consider as being almost equal.
Tip:
You have to call every speaker; only then are the settings saved.
Adjusting channels during operation
If you prefer adjusting the volume proportion of the single speakers using the audio signals
during operation, press the CH SELECT key. “L 0 DB” appears in the display. You can now
increase or decrease the volume of the left front speaker by +/- 10 dB using the VOLUME
+/- keys. Press the CH SELECT key again to set all remaining speakers accordingly.
Tip:
If you have changed the balance of the speakers and thus the values are no more set to
0 dB, the display shows
BAL”.
LFE Trim
If you reproduce a AC-3, -Dolby Digital, or DTS 5.1 signal via one of the digi-
tal inputs, “LFE” appears in the display. Press now the LFE TRIM key on the
remote control. Using the VOLUME +/- keys, you can now decrease the volu-
me of the low-frequency effect channel by up to –10dB. (If you don’t press
any key for 5 seconds, the device exits the LFE TRIM setting.).
