Using Data Projectors /
Compaq Evo N800c Laptop – Troubleshooting tips
The following steps are recommended when using a PC or laptop computer with a data
projector:
1. Make all the connections:
Connect RGB cable (rectangular 15 pin D-connector) from projector to computer video output
connector (it will only fit on one rear connector).
If computer audio is required- connect the 3.5mm plug from the computer speakers to headphone jack at front centre
of computer or the audio output jack on projector.
If VCR playback is required, connect RCA connector from VIDEO IN on projector to VCR VIDEO Out jack. Connect
RCA connector to the Left AUDIO IN on projector and AUDIO OUT on VCR.
2. Always turn the data projector on first:
If the computer is turned on first, it may fail to recognize it is connected to the data projector. If
this happens, make sure the data projector is connected and turned on. Then, reboot the laptop).
Select RGB1 or DATA 1 or COMPUTER 1 (depending on model) on projector keypad or remote.
For VCR playback, select VIDEO or VIDEO 1 on projector, load tape and press Play on VCR.
3. Turn on the computer:
Once the computer has booted to desktop, the start-up images should appear through the
projector.
What to do if you experience problems:
(Note: Details on specific problems which are known to have been experienced by Compaq evo800

If you are experiencing problems with the image displayed on your computer but the projected image
is fine or vice versa, as a quick fix, you can use the Fn + F4 keys to turn off the computer display.
If the image displays on the computer, but does not appear through the projector, the projector may
be an older model. You will have to change the resolution settings on your computer to 800x600
(SVGA). (Details on following pages)
Please do NOT attempt to change the data projector settings; these are pre-set and if changed will
cause additional problems that must be addressed by the Media Technician.

Common Problems experienced by Compaq evo800 laptop computer users
The default resolution setting on RRC Compaq laptop computers is SXGA (1280x1024 pixels).
Details and screen images are included to provide further assistance.
1. The projected image cuts off about 1/3 of the left side.
OR
The projected image is very dark.
OR
In PowerPoint presentation Video clips or digital images are blacked out
o Solution: Change the settings to dual monitors.
(Please Note this can only be done when the laptop is connected to the projector. If this does
not fix the problem then the projector lamp may need replacing.)
2. Everything is connected but the projected image says there is no signal

Projected image cuts off all around the edges of the image.
o Solution: Change the screen resolution to 1024x768 OR 800x600. This may happen with
older model projectors in the college not being able to recognise the signal the computer is
sending. (Recommend trying 1024 x 768 first and if this does not work then try 800 x 600).
Please note the laptop may retain these settings for the next time it is used.
3. Video clips, played from computer are not projected.
Solution: Change the settings to dual monitors. (Please Note this can only be done when
the laptop is connected to the projector. If this does not fix the problem then the video card in
your computer may not have the capability to send the video images to 2 monitors. In this
case you may be able to show the images as either the projected image or on your
computer’s monitor; it will not be able to be displayed on both simultaneously. To do this,
depress both the Function (Fn) + the (F4) until the image is only displayed on the monitor
desired.)
