WARNING The Function Checker does not recalibrate, service or repair any C.Scope Cable Avoidance Tool,
Locator, Signal Generator or Transmitter. The Function Checker does confirm if the C.Scope product is fit for use.
WARNING If a C.Scope Locator, Signal Generator or Transmitter fails any of the Condition Checks or
Performance Checks detailed in this manual then it should be withdrawn from service immediately and
returned to a C.Scope Authorised Service Centre.
NOTE In order to be able to carry out Performance Checks using the Function Checker, it is necessary to be
familiar with the operation of the C.Scope equipment that is to be checked. Training is available from C.Scope
comprising the full and correct use of all C.Scope location equipment (see page 78).

Introduction
The C.Scope Function Checker is a simple-to-use product
that allows the performance of C.Scope Cable Avoidance
Tools, Locators, Signal Generators and Transmitters to
be checked.
The robust and portable Function Checker is battery
operated, and designed for use in a variety of locations
such as at a depot or out on site. It can test a wide
range of C.Scope equipment, to confirm that they are
operating correctly.
The Function Checker will not identify if a C.Scope
product has suffered any form of mechanical damage
that has compromised its structural integrity or ability
to withstand water or dust ingress UNLESS that damage
has also affected electronic performance. The ‘Condition
Checks’ also detailed in this Manual are an essential part
of the checking process to identify such damage and
MUST be carried out on every unit.
It is important to note that the Function Checker does
not recalibrate, service, repair or alter in any way, the
operation of any C.Scope product.
Correct use of the Function Checker allows the operator
to confirm that the product is detecting the signals it is
designed to detect (in the case of C.Scope Locators) or
transmitting the signals it is designed to transmit (in the
case of C.Scope Signal Generators and Transmitters).

Using this Manual
The Function Checker allows Performance Checks to be carried out
on a wide range of C.Scope Cable Avoidance Tools, Locators, Signal
Generators and Transmitters with each model covered in a specific
section of this manual. It is essential to identify exactly which C.Scope
product you wish to test before attempting any of the Checks.
All C.Scope products should undergo two distinct types of checking:
‘Condition Checks and ‘Performance Checks’. This manual has
sections devoted to both of these procedures and it is important that
both are carried out for every product.
The ‘Condition Checks should always be completed before the
‘Performance Checks’.
Condition Checks for all C.Scope Locators are covered in the section
‘Condition Checks C.Scope Locators on pages 9-10. Condition Checks
for all C.Scope Signal Generators or Transmitters are covered in the
section ‘Condition Checks C.Scope Signal Generators and
Transmitters on pages 11-12.

ON/OFF
The Function Checker will automatically turn off five minutes
after the last button press.
MODE
Selects and cycles through the four modes of operation:
for testing the induced output signal of C.Scope Signal
Generators and Transmitters.
for testing connected output signal of C.Scope Signal
Generators and Transmitters.
for testing the CXL, DXL and MXL Locators.
for testing the Cable Avoidance Tool
and Cable Avoidance Tool XD.
POWER
Selects the Power test signal for Locator testing.
RADIO
Selects the Radio test signal for Locator testing.
FREQUENCY
Selects the Generator/Transmitter Mode test signal for
Locator testing.

Selecting a suitable location
In order for the Function Checker to correctly Performance Check a C.Scope product it is important that
there are no strong background electromagnetic signals present that may cause interference. Therefore,
the intended location for using the Function Checker should be checked for background electromagnetic
signals before use.
This can be achieved by scanning the area using the Power and Radio Modes of a Locator. If the Locator
indicates no large power or radio signals then the area should be suitable for Function Checker testing.
(Generally, ‘large’ signals are those that are detectable with the Locator sensitivity control set at 50% or
less on either mode).
NOTE
Electromagnetic signals can be caused or influenced by any of the following:
The operation of other Signal Generators/Transmitters and Sondes in the same area as the Function Checker.
Nearby electrical plant such as transformers or main switch boards.
Live overhead or underground electricity cables directly above or below the Function Checker.
Large metal objects such as steel workbenches or filing cabinets.
Vehicles or plant in close proximity to the Function Checker.
Metal-based flooring, including steel reinforced concrete.

The following Condition Checks MUST be carried out prior
to Performance Checking any C.Scope Locator with the
Function Checker. These Condition Checks are designed
to identify if there is any mechanical deterioration to the
Locator under test that may compromise performance or
make the product vulnerable to water or dust ingress.
If the Locator does not pass all of the Condition Checks
then it should be withdrawn from service immediately
and returned to a C.Scope Authorised Service Centre.

1. Carefully inspect the Locator case for damage or
deterioration such as cracks or distortion.
2. Check all case securing screws are in place.
3. Check that the Wear Foot is in good condition and is
securely fixed to the Locator.
4. Examine the condition of all the labels ensuring they are
intact and all text is legible.
5. Check that the Loudspeaker can be unclipped from the
body, that the cable is undamaged and that the
Loudspeaker can be easily withdrawn and then refitted.
6. Examine the condition of the display for any cracks or
excessive scratching.
7. Check that the Sensitivity Control rotates freely over
three quarters of a turn without any binding and has a
definite stop position at each end.
8. Check that the Mode Switch has definite stop positions
for each mode.
9. Check that the ON/OFF Switch operates smoothly and
does not stick.
10. Inspect the battery compartment for any sign of dirt
or water.
11. Ensure the Battery Cover is in place and locks tightly
shut and that the Battery Cover seal is in good condition.
12. Inspect the Battery Holder for deterioration, distortion
or corrosion. Replace if necessary.
13. Confirm that the spare Battery Holder is present
and inspect for deterioration, distortion or corrosion.
Replace if necessary.
14. Check that the batteries are in good condition. Replace
batteries if incorrectly fitted, damaged or corroded.

C.Scope Signal Generator (Pre-2003)
The following Condition Checks MUST be carried out
prior to Performance Checking any C.Scope Signal
Generator or Transmitter with the Function Checker.
These Condition Checks are designed to identify if there
is any mechanical deterioration to the product under
test that may compromise performance or make the
product vulnerable to water or dust ingress.
If the Signal Generator or Transmitter does not pass
all of the Condition Checks then it should be withdrawn
from service immediately and returned to a C.Scope
Authorised Service Centre.

1. Carefully inspect the Signal Generator/Transmitter
case for damage or deterioration such as cracks
or distortion.
2. Check all case securing screws are in place.
3. Examine the condition of all the labels ensuring they
are intact and all text is legible.
4. Check the operation of any switches/push buttons.
5. (SGV/MXT only) Examine the display for any cracks or
excessive scratching.
6. Remove the Battery Cover and check the compartment
for any sign of dirt or water or corrosion.
7. (Pre-2003 Signal Generator only) Inspect the Battery
Holder for damage or deterioration such as cracks,
distortion or corrosion.
8. Check that the batteries are in good condition. Replace
batteries if incorrectly fitted, damaged or corroded.
9. (SGA/SGV/MXT) Replace the Battery Cover, ensuring
that the screws are finger tight and that the Battery
Cover seal is in good condition.
10. (Pre-2003 Signal Generator only) Replace the Battery
Cover, ensuring that the securing studs are in place.
11. Check that the Direct Connection Leads, Auxiliary
Earth Lead and Earth Stake are present. Replace
if missing.
12. Inspect all leads for any damage to the cables or
crocodile clips. Replace if damaged.
13. (SGA/black SGV/Pre-2003 Signal Generator)
Check that magnets are fitted to the Direct Connection
and Earth Leads.
14. (grey 1Watt SGV/MXT only) Check that the plastic
covers are fitted to the crocodile clips. Replace if
damaged or missing.
15. (grey 1Watt SGV/MXT only) Check that magnets are
present as separate accessories.
16. (SGA/SGV/MXT) Check that the Accessory Tray can
be clipped on to the base of the unit.
17. (Pre-2003 Signal Generator only) Check that the lid
closes and locks shut.

NOTE In order to carry out Performance Checks using the Function Checker, it is necessary to be familiar
with the correct operation of the C.Scope Locator to be tested.
NOTE Only use the Function Checker in an area that has been scanned and found to be suitable for use,
as described in the ‘Selecting a suitable location’ section on page 8.
These tests should NOT be carried out in the close vicinity of any active Signal Generators, Transmitters or Sondes.
1. Place the Function Checker on the ground with the Accessory Tray securely clipped to
the underside of the Function Checker.
2. Switch ON the Function Checker. Check the Battery Condition Indicator in the bottom
left hand corner of the Function Checker display. If there is only one segment or no segments
of the indicator filled in then the batteries must be replaced before the Function Checker
can be used.
3. Position the Locator alongside the Function Checker with the base of the Locator touching
the ground and one of the Function Checker Accessory Tray Retaining Clips.
NOTE The Locator can be placed either side of the Function Checker but must be touching the side and held vertically.
If the Locator is transferred from one side of the Function Checker to the other the same visual response should occur
on the Locator. This can be a good indication that there are no interfering signals from nearby sources. If the Locator
responses are not the same then try testing in a different location.

4. Press the ‘M’ button on the Function Checker.
Repeat until ‘L2’ is displayed.
5. Press the ‘Power’ button on the Function Checker.
The ‘Power’ icon should be displayed.
6. Turn the Locator ON by pulling up on the ON/OFF trigger
and check the battery condition using the Battery Condition Indicator
in the bottom left hand corner of the display.
CORRECT RESULT: The Locator should emit a clear audible battery
check tone for one second and the Battery Condition Indicator should
show at least 2 segments. Replace the batteries if necessary.
7. Select ‘Power’ mode on the Locator.
CORRECT RESULT: Confirm that the ‘Power’ mode icon is showing
on the Locator display.

8. Check the correct operation of the Sensitivity Control by adjusting
it first fully clockwise (maximum sensitivity) and then fully
anti-clockwise (minimum sensitivity).
CORRECT RESULT: The Locator bar graph should change
from showing a full-scale response when on maximum
sensitivity to no response at all when on minimum
sensitivity.
NOTE If the bar graph does not drop to zero when on minimum sensitivity it may be due to background electromagnetic
signals. Refer to the ‘Selecting a suitable location’ section on page 8.
9. Rotate the Sensitivity Control so that the bar graph
shows a mid-scale response with the audio tone sounding.
Slide the Locator along the side of the Function Checker
to find the position of maximum signal, re-adjusting the
sensitivity, if necessary, to keep the indication at mid-scale.
CORRECT RESULT: The Sensitivity Control should now
be at a rotation of approximately a one-quarter turn
from minimum.
NOTE It is important to NOT adjust the sensitivity setting of the Locator or to move it from this position for the
remaining tests.

10. Select ‘Radio’ on the Function Checker.
The ‘Radio’ icon should be displayed.
11. Select ‘Radio’ mode on the Locator.
CORRECT RESULT: Confirm that the ‘Radio’ mode icon is
showing on the Locator display. The Locator bar graph should
show a mid-scale response with the audio tone sounding.
12. Press the ‘Frequency’ button on the Function Checker.
The Function Checker display should show ‘33kHz’.
13. Select ‘Generator’ mode on the Locator.
CORRECT RESULT: Confirm that the ‘33kHz’ icon is showing
on the Locator display. The Locator bar graph should show a
mid-scale response with the audio tone sounding.

14. DEPTH CHECKING - XD only
Press the ‘M’ button on the Function Checker.
Repeat until ‘L1’ is displayed.
15. DEPTH CHECKING - XD only
Position the XD with the Wear Foot of the Locator at a measured
distance of 1metre from the Function Checker and in line with it
(exactly as shown in the diagram).

Select ‘Generator’ mode on the Locator.

17. DEPTH CHECKING - XD only
Carry out a ‘SONDE’ depth measurement by pressing the depth button
twice and holding on the second press.
CORRECT RESULT: The word ‘SONDE’ will flash on the display
and a depth of between 0.85m and 1.20m will be indicated.
NOTE It is essential that the depth button is pressed twice in quick succession to select ‘SONDE’ depth measurement
(indicated by the word ‘SONDE’ appearing on the screen) and not a ‘Line’ depth measurement as this will give an
incorrect reading.
NOTE The XD displays depths to the nearest 0.15m in Sonde Mode and so the indicated depth may vary by 0.15m
depending on how close it is to indicating the next depth level.
If all of the ‘Condition Checks’ (pages 9-10) and ‘Performance Checks’ (pages 14-19) have been completed successfully
then the Locator is operating correctly in all three modes.
